Will my server be bottlenecked?

$

Hi Guys,

I have been obsessing over this configuration of a server and would appreciate some input as I am afraid of forging ahead and implementing a crippled system.

We have a DL385 G7 with an onboard P420i + BBWC + SAS Expander card and 11 x 146GB 15K SAS drives. This server is going to be rebuilt as an ESXi server hosting 7 VM's with a wide range of uses. I am confident of having enough CPU and RAM but am worried about disk throughput. Sadly, I cannot provide any I/O requirements for the eventual VMs as they will be fresh built. .

I was planning to split off two or three of the high disk load servers (2 x Terminal Servers and 1 File Server also hosting a mail server) onto a RAID 10 and having a second RAID 5 for all other servers.

My question was whether what I propose above is a good idea but also whether it is wise to have a single controller managing both drive cages and two RAID arrays? Will I create a bottleneck?

Any help would be well received :) Thanks

Installed Windows Server 2008 R2, 64-bit.  The OS only sees 3GB of RAM.  How can I get it to see the 4GB (2x2GB) that is installed?  Bios is 2010.10.25 13 Dec 2010.

We have maxed out 8 SFF SAS drives and need additional storage.

Ive been looking online and it seems i can just buy a 8 SFF SAS Expander (661714-B21), connect a couple of cables and it will work. Is this correct? Are there any instructions or video's on how it conencts?

Hello.

I have Dl360 G5 with SmartArray 400i Embedded.

Now Array Configuration Utility is showing an warning "A firmware update is recommended for the controller"

My current Firmware Version is 4.06 and if i got it right there is the latest one:

http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdDetails/?sp4ts.oid=3288144&spf_p.tpst=swdMain&spf_p.prp_swdMain=wsrp-navigationalState%3Didx%253D%257CswItem%253DMTX_5be630903e3d44e5916a7fed8f%257CswEnvOID%253D4064%257CitemLocale%253D%257CswLang%253D%257Cmode%253D%257Caction%253DdriverDocument&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken

But I have Win2008 r2 installed, and if i try to apply this firmware I get "the required hardware is not present in the system"

How can I update firmware or what did I do wrong?

battery status failed

I had a problem with my Hp proliant DL 180G5 server, in this server i have  smart array e200 controller. when i  browse this controller through web i t is showing some error in acceleration as

status                                           Temporarily Disabled

Error code                                    Cache Disabled Low Battery

Battery Status                            Failed

So, with this message we have replaced the battery, but the error still the same. So my next step is to upgrade the firmware of the controller. Do you think this is the right decision, if so please tell me how to do this firmware updating, and also I need to know that if the firmware is updated any raid configuration is changed.

please help me what to be done.

Hi! I have currently a ML350 G6 with two processors and 32GB of RAM, mainly for Hyper-V. I want to upgrade the ram, to be able to add more virtual machines, but I've been reading the user guide and I'm not sure how to do it.

This is my current RAM configuration:

How could I double RAM memory?? Can I use 8GB modules?? How I should populate the slots?

By the way, I think all my memory is running at 667MHz, can I improve this speed?

ML350 G5 with E200i and 1TB drives - Amber flashes continuously

$

Hi,

We have a client with a Proliant ML 350 G5 server with 3 x RAID 1 Arrays on an e200i controller with firmware 1.86. Array C had 2 x 300GB SAS 2.5" HP drives. 1 drive failed and before we could replace it the other failed.

We then deleted the Array and installed 2 x 1TB Seagate drives and configured the Array. The array configuration utility reports the logical drive as OK and I can copy and delete files on the volume.

My concern is that the Green LED is solid (which is good) but the Amber LED flashes constantly (from what I read, this means a Predictive failure - worrying) on both drives even though the Config Utility says all is good. So now I'm a bit confused as to the status of the array and am nervous to put data on the volume.

I have not rebooted the server since adding the new drives.

Does anyone have any idea why it may be doing this or how to get the Amber lights to stop flashing?

Thanks,

G

Hi to all.

I have a two problem.

I've a server with 2 disk in raid 1 with this logical drive status: Ready for rebuild.

But rebuild does not take place.

Yesterday IML logged this event: "Drive Array Device Failure (Slot 2, Bus 1, Bay 1)",Drive Array Subsystem,Critical,1,21/08/2014 12.36,21/08/2014 12.36

but

thi is the result of ADU:

disk0: Last Failure Reason: 0x07 (Drive timeout)

disk1: Last Failure Reason: 0x05 (Mark bad operation failed)

............not bad............

It seem that both drive have problems...

Have you to seggest some way to resolve replica issue?

What is the active disk with true data?

Actually I can't upgrade firmware because I can't have phisical access to the server (prod server i nanother location).

Hi,

I just make a complete restoration of one of my backups (made with built in windows sbs2011 tool) , just for testing... on similar machine. (just the CPU is different (E5-2630 instead of E5-2620).

In Device Manager i have some missing drivers, i tried to install different drives for all components and in the end, i install everything from the HP site, even the firmware's ! Nothing will happened, my missing drivers are still there. (see picture below). Booth machines are DL 380 G8.

I tried everything from google and hp forums, still not showing installed... but the server is working well.

Any idea ???

P.S. The primary machine was installed from a ROK Kit with smart start, the backup was restored with an installation disc and i choosed "restore image".

hello every one,

i would like to ask a question about HP hard drives:

i have two hp proliant DL38 G6 server each with 8 hard bay installed and i planned to make them host most of primary services of the company mostly virtualized

each server will host four or more server roles on its own array for example:

hdd1+hdd2 RAID 1hosts active directory

hdd3+hdd4 RAID 1hosts DHCP

hdd5+hdd6 RAID 1 hosts Radius

hdd7+hdd8 RAID 1 hosts DNS

the exact same Array configuration is true for the second server

i have three diferent type of HP hard drives each with limited number of them , i just wanted to be sure are they compatible with each other please have a look at the attachment..

can i use two differnet model on the same raid for exaple what is the impact if i use number 1 with 2 or any other combination of them in one raid ?

DL380 G7 - > PCI Express Solid State Drives incomptible with newest Firmware?!

Hello...

I have new BIOS: P67 07/02/2013

upgraded P410i controller also...

I cannot force to work PCIE SSD M.2 (NGFF) drive:

/dev/sda:
 Model=PLEXTOR PX-AG128M6e                     , FwRev=1.01    , SerialNo=P02412103556

01:00.0 SATA controller: Device 1c28:0122 (rev 14)

My BIOS options test:

*Force PCI-E Generation 2

*Load Option Card Devices First -- this activates Plextor ROM-BIOS screen correctly

*P410i SAS controller - disabled

*Boot controller order - all combinations

Device looks like another controller in BIOS startup. Works everywhere without problems (simple workstations with Pcie2 x16 slot) but not on DL380 Server!

Server starts as usually... shows one screen after P410i controller -> SSD PlextorROM announcement... later: NetworkROM and then reboots. Entering BIOS setup F9 never possible because of reboot - need to disconnect PCIE card to access F9 and change some options.

Why it doesn't work? Any idea? Please help.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Installation

When I try to install Server 2012 from DVD I get error saying no valid media drivers found.

After searching I found that I had to install through HP Intelligent Pro.

I went through the full installation, entered admin password for the server and thought all was fine.

I went to log in and it says the password I had entered was incorrect. I now can't log in.

I am having to go through it all again and it is rather annoying and making me wish I hadn't purchased an HP system.

Is there a way that I can install it from the disk without having to use HP IP and actually get everything up and running.

This is rather tedious as I have been on this for several hours now and I am still not logged in and starting again with an install.

Thanks in advance.

I have a DL380p Gen8 with eight 900 GB drives.  I want to install Server 2008 R2.  IP created a 2 TB partition and installed Server 2008.  In disk management I can see the rest of the space as unallocated but it will not let me do anything with it.  What am I missing?

Thank you,

HP ProLiant DL380 G7 restarted while rebuilding array

It has four hard drives, one is dead, I suppose that another one is dead too, but is there any way to force the array to rebuild again?

The server has restarted while it was rebuilding an array.

My windows server(2008) that is on it won't boot, it goes directly to system recovery screen.

I have an image backup, would restoring it be my only option?

If I restore, it will get back to regular automatically or will I have to configure something?

Interpreting ADU HDD fail log?

$

Hello,
i have a SAS HDD failure that's been reported by ACU(HDD blinks fail light) and i generated a report about it, the problem with ACU reports is that they're filled with hexadecimal values and are very cryptic to discover just WHAT the problem is, here's an excerpt of values that are clearly wrong compared to healthy drives:

Drive status:

Last Failure Reason Write Protected (0x0f)

Device Flag Status
SMART Predictive Failure Supported Informational
SMART Predictive Failure Errors Are Recorded In The Factory MP Data For This Drive Warning
SMART Predictive Failure Is Enabled Informational
SMART Predictive Failure Errors Are Recorded In The Since Power MP Data For This Drive Warning
Device Attached To Internal Connector Informational
Configured Data Drive Informational

Later in the MNP since factory:

Read Errors Hard 0x000000de

Other Time Outs 0x0025

Media Failures 0x0002

Predictive Failure Errors 0x00000036

and MNP since reset:

Read Errors Hard 0x00000003

Media Failures 0x0002

Predictive Failure Errors 0x00000002

i can't find any HP document on a list of error codes and interpretations(the individual values i can understand them, but what are the thresholds, why isn't there a simple SMART value/threshold viewer like any normal HDD?), what does the predictive hardware failkures value means?, Also, how come it gives "Write protected", how does an HDD is Write protected?!?!?!?, better put, WHY has the disk put himself in that mode(or the controller)
