External disk storage for DL 360 G6

Hello,

I have HP ProLiant DL360 G6 Server with integrated Smart Array P410i controller. Now I have RAID5 with 4x2.5" 2TB HDDs but soon I will need more disks. Unfortunately I cannot use backplane kit to extend my RAID-array.

My server has one PCI-E x8 and one PCI-E x16 slots. What RAID-controller with RAID5 option can be installed in these slots? Can you suggest external 3.5" disk storage (HP StorageWorks or else) to connect with this RAID-controller?

Missing space in RAID 5 array

I'm probably going to walk away from this with a red face but I can't puzzle it out.

I have a new DL380G7 with 4x 1TB SAS drives; RAID 5, no spare (I know).

I'd have expected 3x 1TB = 3TB of space in my logical drive and that amount useable for my partitions but I only have 2.35TB of space for my OS.

Can I lose 0.5TB just from the big stripe size? That was the unattended default settings the P410i makes - I didn't SmartStart this box as I was putting Server2012 on it.

What is the latency of this transivier 453154-B21 http://h30094.www3.hp.com/product/sku/3742795  ?

I.e. how much time it spents to resend packet?

I want to know it to understand what is better in my case - use slow 1000BASE-T card and no transivier, or use fast 10Gb card + transivier.

Proliant DL380 G4 memory upgrade (PC2-3200R -> PC2-5300)

I'm looking to upgrade the memory in my HP Proliant DL380 G4 server, as it currently only has 2GB total. I know it can only handle 2GB or smaller modules. It uses PC2-3200R 400MHz DDR2 ECC memory. I have a ton of PC2-5300 ECC memory from other HP servers. However, it will not boot with that memory. Is there a way I can enable the server to use PC2-5300 memory? I know most PCs will just lower the speed, the only requirement being to use the same DDR generation (DDR, DDR2, DDR3, etc). Thanks

Temperature Sensor Ambient

I have 2 Proliant DL380P Gen8 with iLO 2.02. Same exact model, one racked on top of the other.
This a a far datacenter, I don't have physical access.

The 01 temperature sensors are displayed differently and with very different temperature and acceptable range.
One is "01-Inlet Ambient" and the other  "01-Front Ambient".

I have someone in the remote datacenter to check air blockage in the front, and they tell me they are unblocked and freem and supposedly "breathing almost the same cooled air" from the rack.

Anyone have any clue why they are displayed and named differently, displaying different values and ranges?

Proliant DL380 G7 - RemoteFX

Hi,

We are looking to use 2x Proliant DL380 G7 Hosts to serv up VDI to clients using HyperV 2012 & RDS.

Currently we are running 20 guest VMs on each @ 4gb ram and 2 core, 10G network bandwidth to core switch.

Perfomance is quite good through HP WES8 thin clients - however I have found the bottleneck to be video rendering; because of this I want to enable RemoteFX on the Hosts but the option is greyed out due to the lack of a compatible video card.

Hope you can help with a couple of questions.

1. What sort of difference does RemoteFX actually make to VDI clients

2. Can you suggest a video card that is compatible with VDI 2012r2 and the Proliant DL380 G7 form factor/power requirements.

Any real life advice would be appreciated.

Cheers - Paul

HP Proliant DL360 Gen9 controller nightmare!

Anyone buying Gen9 servers read the small print about the controller card it comes with very carefully.  My server came with a B140i card.  When the server arrived I added the hard drives but nothing happened.  Could not see them in the ACU or Smart Storage as they now call it.  Turns out that this card only supports SATA disks.  Great.  All my disks are SAS!

Some of these Dynamic Smart Array cards simply do not let you use SAS until you buy a licence but not with the B140i.  I guess the lesson is to read the small print.  I just never expected HP to sell a modern server that doesn't accept SAS drives.  At the very least the error it gives you when attaching them could be more helpful.

So after some discussion with my supplier I am buying this card http://h30094.www3.hp.com/product.aspx?sku=11112576&mfg_part=726736-B21&pagemode=ca a HP Smart Array P440ar/2GB FBWC 12Gb 2-ports Int SAS Controller

As I don't have much experience fitting these I just wanted to know what it entails.  Do I simply attach the card and use the existing drive bays as they are? Do I need to disable the old card? Do I need to enable the new card in the BIOS?  Is it easy to attach? Any information on this would be really helpful.  As would any advise on my choice of card.

DL560 MSA30 drive array Hard drive upgrade to 146GB 15k drives

$

I have two DL560 servers with 6402 controllers (firmware 2.34) with a MSA30 attached to each server with a mixture of 15k and 10drives.

One server is a 4 cpu 2.8ghz SQL server

One server is a 2Ghz DATA server

The problem I have is that I would like to upgrade all the drives in SQL DL560 MSA30 drive array with 146GB 15k drives

I would like to implement this with some form of role back plane.

My plane is to use one of the servers to restore the data

I would like to temporally remove all the drives form my DATA server. And install the new 14 drive into the data server.

Backup the SQL server and restore onto the DATA servers new drives. Verify that the restore has been successful, and move the 14 new drives from the data server to the SQL server.

Re-install the DATA server drives.

Could you tell me the best way to carry out the above procedure. Will I have to backup and restore the 6402 configuration. At each change of hardware configuration. Or will I just have to reboot the server at each stage in the process.

Or has anyone one have a simple solution to my upgrade problem

change disks in a storageworks 5i array

$

I've got a DL380 G3 with 2 internal 36Gb disks in a single logical drive mirror using the internal storageworks 5i controller.
I would like to change these 2 36Gb disks for a pair of 18Gb disks. I cannot find a way to migrate the array to another pair of disks using any of the RAID migration/resizing options offereed by the controller.
These are the system disks and I have no great desire to reinstall the W2KAS OS.
Best option I can see so far is to create a second array and logical drive using the 18Gb disks and then use some third party utility to try and copy the contents of one drive to the other - made more awkward by the fact that most of these utilites want to operate outwith windows after a reboot (and hence have no drivers available to even see the logical disks being presented by the controller).
Furthermore I can only seem to get the DL360 to boot off the logical drive with the lowest number and I cannot seem to see how to rename or renumber a logical drive without deleting it and potentially then losing all the data on it.
All ideas gratefully received
thnx

SCSI drive goes Offline : event ID 1070

Hi,

I have a ML350 with 2 SCSI HD CPQ model BD0366349C mirrored. For an unknown reason, two nights ago, the event viewer (system logs)in Windows 2000 srv started given me errors (Sorage Agents source - event ID 1070). It gives me a first message saying that the HD has changed status from OK to Offline. Only 2 minutes after, it returns back to an OK status. This error is logged just after midnight (with no users connected) and half an hour after the backup begins (I've checked w/ Veritas BackupExec support - nothing associated for now). Only one drive gave me the error.

Now last night, same error , approximately the same time, but now the 2 mirrored HD are giving me the error messages.

Anyone have a clue ? Ever seen this before ?

There's nothing in Insight. Status OK everywhere. very hard to tell if it's hardware related or not.

Thanks in advance
