ML370 and PowerQuest

$

I'm using a DOS boot disk (made with Power Deploy Disk Builder) to connect to the network for creating a PowerQuest image.

Under normal conditions, it takes 8 seconds to launch PowerQuest. I can do it without any problem with every server, but with the ML370 I have problems. It takes 8 seconds to run. but for the ML370s it takes almost 3 minutes and after that, it doesn't show the volumes on the remote server where the images are

I have replaced the NIC, added more memory, changed the controller on the client machine; even I have created a small network and there everything works.

Images reside on a Windows 2000 with Active Directory and a 5300 SCSI controller with 2 18Gb and 4 72Gb with an 8 36 Gb StorageWorks. Does anyone know where the problem could be? Netbios?

HP Proliant DL160 G6 - Physical drive status: Predictive failure

Greetings!

I have HP Proliant DL160 G6 server (model No. 590161-421) configured with two logical volumes (both RAID 1), first contains two 300Gb SAS physical drives (boxes 1-2), second - a pair of 2 TB SATA HDD (boxes 3-4).
The problem is the amber LED indicator flashing at box 1.

ADU reports:

physicaldrive 1I:1:1 (port 1I:box 1:bay 1, 300 GB): Predictive Failure

More Device Flags:

0 SMART Predictive Failure Supported Informational
1 SMART Predictive Failure Errors Are Recorded In The Factory MP Data For This Drive Warning
2 SMART Predictive Failure Is Enabled Informational
3 SMART Predictive Failure Errors Are Recorded In The Since Power MP Data For This Drive Warning
4 Device Attached To Internal Connector Informational
5 Configured Data Drive Informational

But report contains no failure reason:

Last Failure Reason No Failure (0x00)

ACU report is attached to message.

I suppose that physical drive is functional at the present moment, but there will be errors that possible in future.

Please advise the best practice, which I suppose to do - to perform th hot swap of drive (if my model supports it), or shut down server and swap the drive offline. How long the rebuild process will continue (300GB SAS HDD)?

Are any additional actions from me when hot swapping (except for the removal of old and installation of new HDD)?

Thanks in advance

P420 in DL380p gen8 serializes configuration tasks

I have a pair of DL380p gen8 servers that I am testing for a storage-intensive application.   doing this requires that I configure them in a number of different ways (changing the RAID config, the stripsize, etc..) and testing the storage performance.

Unfortunately, unlike previous Smart Array controllers, the P420 is only allowing me to manage one logical drive at a time.   For example, on the server with 25, 900GB SAS drives, I have four logical drives for data (RAID5, 6 disks each).   The parity initialization was done one logical drive at a time and took more than a day.

I am in the middle of changing the ld's from 256k strip size to 128.  The reconfiguration is only allowed one logical drive at a time and each is taking many hours to complete.

I would like the controller to do this sort of thing on all the logical drives affected in parallel.  Is there a setting I am missing that permits this?

DL380 - MDS600

Hello

The technology:
I have a HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8
with a Smart Array P420 controller to which 2 HP 146 GB 6 G SAS 15 k are connected  as RAID 1
and a Smart Array P822 / 2 GB FBWC 6 GB SAS
to which a HP MDS600 with 36 x 2 TB 6 GB LFF SAS should be connected with 4 Mini-SAS cables.
All 36 disks shall be interconnected as a RAID 60 (two RAID 6 in a RAID 0).

The question:
How do I distribute the hard disks in the two slots of the MDS600 best?
Which of the 8 ports on the MDS600 shall I use to connect to the 4 ports on the P822 to get the best performance?

I would like to get the maximum speed.

Thanks in advance

Connecting 2 servers together w/ vhdci cable

Is this possible?  I have a ml370 g3 and dl380 g3 running ubuntu 12.0.4lts on both servers.  On the ml370, i'm running 6 hdd's in a 1+0 setup w/ a 642 controller and the dl380 is running 2 hdd's in 1+0 w/ the 5i smart onboard controller.   Is it possible for the ml370 to add additional hdd's by connecting a vhcdi cable from 642 contoller to the dl380 controller.  I would like to add 4 more hdd's to dl380 and have my ml370 able to use those hdd's.

thanks

HP DL380 G7 with P410i and P800 running Debian squeeze - possible hpacucli issue?

Hi,

I have a an issue with a DL380 G7 using 1x P410i and 1x P800 controller.

The server is running 64-bit Debian Squeeze and is up-to-date with updates.

The problem is after the P800 was installed. The P800 is connected to 2x MSA70 shelves, one on each port of the P800.

Without any shelves attached, the P800 shows no errors at all.

After connecting the shelves, hpacucli shows the following error:

~# hpacucli ctrl all show

Smart Array P800 in Slot 4 (sn: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX)

CACHE STATUS PROBLEM DETECTED: The controller is disabled because the cache
module is not attached. Please re-attach the
cache module to re-enable the controller.

Smart Array P410i in Slot 0 (Embedded) (sn: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX)

The version of hpacucli is: 9.10-23

Converted from rpm to deb-package with alien.

Using older versions of hpacucli (8.70-8.0.2-2 from HP deb-repository) returns "no controllers found".

Since the controller returns no errors when the shelves are not connected, this leads me to believe that it's actually an issue with hpacucli rather than a controller/shelf problem (Read a blogpost claiming the exact same issue with the same server hardware + controllers + debian, without a solution working for me though). The P800 with same shelves work fine in a DL360 G5 instead running same version of Debian and kernel.

I have tried different versions of hpacucli to try and solve the problem but so far no success.

Any feedback is most welcome.

new logical disk become Array A

Hi,

We have an issue with a Smart Array 6i controller, hosted in a ProLiant DL380.

There is an existing RAID1 logical volume configured since years. We have added 3 new disks on the fly (hot plug) and configured a new RAID5 logical disk, using CPQONLIN (yes, Netware).

After reboot, the server hangs, as it is trying to boot from the new logical disk.

The issue is that the new logical disk became Array A, and the old one Array B. This is why the OS having problems to boot.

How could we `force` the new volume to be Array B?

Or, alternatively, is it possible to `tell` the raid card to boot from the 2nd logical disk?

Thanks in advance.

Possible to rebuild RAID5 with larger hard drives?

I have a DL 380 G5 with a 6 drive RAID5 array of 300GB drives. I want to expand it with 500GB drives.

can i swap the drives out one by one and rebuild the array each time with the 500GB drives?

Replace SATA drives with SAS via hot swap?

My client has a DL380 G5 with a Smart Array P400 controller.  Currently I have three RAID 1+0 arrays configured, all using SATA drives.  This is a highly used server and we're starting to see drive failures.  I'm recommending going to SAS drives for better performance and lifespan.  The question now is how to change the drives.  Can I simply replace one drive in the mirror, allow the rebuild to take place, then replace the second drive?  This would be the easiest approach.  If not, any recommendations on how to replace the drives without data loss?  I can schedule some downtime if necessary.

Thanks,

Joe

SAS Drive Activity/power LED help!!

$

Ive got a Proliant G6 with a P411 SAS card connected to an LSI 620J storage enclosure and 15 and 10K seagate Savvios.

Some of the drives show a continous power LED and flash when accessed, and the others have the LED off, but also flashed when accessed.

So some drives sit there with the activity LED off, while some of them have the LED on by default.

THIS post here, someone manages to set the SAS 19h Mode page ready LED here:-

http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Savvio-Cheetah-and-Constellation/ST9146853SS-ST9146852SS-and-ST9146803SS-Activity-LEDs-stay-on/m-p/133142

Which is great, but how would I do that with a Smart Array Controller?

You can only "see" the drives when a logical disk is created. How can I send this HDPARM command directly to the disk hardware?

If anyone knows I would be soooooo grateful.

Cheers!

ive got a 2x160 gb hard drives in my proliant dl180 server and i have raided them together into raid 1

one of the drives went faulty so i called HP and they sent me a 250gb hard drive instead of a 160gb, i said it is part of a raid and will the 250gb one they sent me still work with the 160gb in the raid array, they said yes it will

will the 250gb work with the 160gb in the raid array, please?

Add drives to existing raid 5

Hi, I have a ML350 G6 with raid 5 configured. I'm wondering if it's possible to add an additional drive to the raid array without rebuilding the whole array ie. I don't loose any data and just expand the array? If possible, does anyone know how VMware vSphere 5.0 handles this? Do I need to rebuild the datastore or can I just expand it? Thanks, -Patric

How to upgrade an existing 1+0 array to larger discs?

$

Hi,

Is there any other way to expand my 1+0 array other than take a total backup - replace harddrives to larger ones - create new array - and restore?

I have the following configuration:

ProLiant DL380 G6 with 8 drive bays.

Array controller P410i

System runs on 4 drives with raid 1+0

Data is on 4 drives with raid 1+0. Each drive is 300GB which gives us 600GB storage.

I have bought four 600GB Drives.

Is it possible to just remove one drive at a time and replace it with a new larger disk?

How would you proceed?

Thanks

StenK

This is DL360p Gen8 with P420i BBWC. I have reset the BIOS to default setting including Erase Boot Disk option. As you can see I am using the offline ACU.

At boot at F8 prompt, it will not let me delete the logical disk. It refers me to use the ACU instead. Any ideas???

Thanks

Burning PCI-E riser card in SE1102 with 4 port gigabit NIC

$

Hi All,

I recently bought a used SE1102 server from eBay, and decided to add a 4-port HP Gigabit NIC (NC364T) to it for use with VMware.

After connecting it to the PCI-E riser card, and installing the whole bracket into the server, I powered it up.

After about 10 seconds, the room started to fill with smoke. I turned the server off and opened it up a bit later, and found the PCI-E riser card hard started to burn, it was all black and had damaged the NIC.
Needless to say, I chucked this immediately.

I have since had a replacement riser card sent to me, and have obtained a brand new NC364T. Before I go ahead and try again, does anyone know why this might have happened, and if it would be likely to happen again?
I am putting it down to a damaged PCI-E riser card, but am a bit aprehensive about potentially ruining another NIC.

There is no info out there about this server, so am at a bit of a loss. The PCI-E slot is 8x, the riser is 8x, and the NIC is 4x.

Many thanks
Eds

Apologize ahead of time as I am new to HP's processes.  Have a Gen 8 DL360P server that has two failed drives.  Replaced the RAID 1 volume with new drives and now trying to use the Intelligent Provisioning feature to reinstall the OS.  Having trouble finding where I can download an HP Windows 2008R2 ISO to use for the installation.  If someone could assist would greatly appreciate it.

HI,

I have a HP proliant G7  with smart array p410i in raid 5 with 5 disk of 300 GB.

one of my disk begin clignote orange. I think it's going to dead.

I want to know if i can replace it now.

And also know how to replace a disk in this kind of configuration (RAID 5).

p420 reset

We have a SMartarray P420 that seems bricked after a firmware update from v3 to v6. Everything was working fine before the update.

During bootup it says:

Selftest failure (cmd=0h, err=00h, lockup=0AB:0h)

Onboard is a V3 backup ROM.  How can I reset the adapter and use the backup ROM.

Some manuals mention it should do this autmatically it seems not to happen in this case.

I have tried to reflash from Windows and Linux and although the card shows up in the device list, it can't be accessed by the utilities.

Any hint how to solve this?
