i can't install windows server 2008 on hp proliant dl380 gen9

Cannot POST, rebooting at 10% during CPU initialization, Code 0168 and/or 4048

Hi Everyone,

I have a <1 year old ML310e Gen8 v2 server and it recently decided fail to POST after I tried to reboot the server.

It turns on for ~5 seconds, where I can see it's still only at 10% of the POST, doing CPU initialization.  The Code at the bottom right of the screen reports 0168.  As far as I can tell, any 1xx code is a motherboard related issue but i can't find anything specifical to 0168.

the iLO session Code that gets reported is 4048.

I've pull the power, done a cold boot, no difference.

The server is outiftted with 3x 8GB Crucial RAM on top of the 4GB stock RAM and it also has a PCIe X2 SATA controller.  All these parts were working fine for many months already...  I'm going to pull the parts and retest to see if it help but I suspect it won't.

Anyone have any idea what could be the issue?

Thanks,

DL380 G7 P410i Disk Reads Slow

Hi,

I am just setting up some DL360 G7 servers with the P410i 1GB and 8 x 146GB 15K drives. The disks are being configured as a single Raid 10 unit and I am installing Centos 7 on these. One of the servers is showing slow disk reads in comparison to the others and I am not sure why. I have used the CLI to generate an output of the disks and raid config and the systems are identical, same firmware, settings in the bios, disk partitions, etc.

Problem server performace running hdparm - Timing buffered disk reads: 1448 MB in  3.00 seconds = 482.24 MB/sec

Other servers - Timing buffered disk reads: 2364 MB in  3.00 seconds = 787.71 MB/sec

As you can see, there is quite a difference in the reads between these two devices. I pulled all the disks from the slower unit, replaced them with other disks and same problem exists. I have started out from scratch a couple times, redoing the raid unit, re-installing the OS and still the same. I have confirmed the BBW is charged and working and cache settings are the same as on the other servers.

Any suggestions on what I can do to troubleshoot this further and fix this?

Many Thanks,

Chuck

se326m1 hardware modding

Hi,

I bought a SE326M1 server (very similar to DL180 G6) which I plan to use for homelab desktop virtualization.

CPU and RAM didn't arrive yet, so I didn't turn it on yet but I have a few hardware modding ideas
Remember, this is home project, so "unsupported" and "wouldn't do this in production" are beside the point :)
I'm asking for your opiniton on whether this is feasible, will it/does it have a chance to work or other ways I should consider to reach the intended result.

It's a 25xSFF version, p410i raid controller, 1x x16 riser on the low profile side , 2x x8 riser on the other

I have several problems with the raid controller:
Ideally I would want to use 3 pcie cards:
 - 1 video passed to linux vm
 - 1 video passed to windows vm (probably 2 slot wide preferred)
 - usb 3.0; and the raid controller occupies one of the slots
Also I plan to use zfs and p410 doesn't have direct JBOD mode. While possible to create single-disk raid0 volumes to "emulate" JBOD mode.

Considering the pcie slot "stolen", the best solution would be to somehow drive the 25xSFF backplane from the 6 onboard SATA ports. Note that I don't expect or need high IO bandwidth, so having like 6gbps total bandwidth to the hdd backplane would be acceptable. I don't plan to use anywhere near 25 hdds, but I wouldn't like to be limited to 4 or 6 either.

Does connecting 4 sata ports on motherboard to the backplane with a cable like this
have any chance to work?

Another modding target is the full-height riser card

ideally I would like the lower 2 slots be occupied by an upper-medium performance video card (R7 370 is the most likely candidate) which I will pass through to the windows vm.
But then the upper slot being not connected I'd need a 3x x8 riser like this:

My question would be:
Suppose I get a custom circuit manufactured which directly wires the left x16 into a x16 connector in the middle slot and the x4 connector into a x4 (or x8) connector in the upper slot..
Note I'm talking just direct wiring, no circuits..
Would this possibly-probably work?

ML310 G5p PCIe version/generation?

$

The spec sheet claims the ML310 G5p (and G5?) are "PCI-Express 3.0 Compliant" on page 4, section "Industry Standard Compliance".

But the Intel 3210 Chipset only claims to support PCIe 1.1 .

What generation of PCIe does it support?

Hello,
I can't find a link where I can check the compatibility with Windows Server 2012 R2 for an HP ML310 G5 server.

Is there someone that have installed WS 2012 R2 on this server?
Any link where I can found more informations?

Thank you.

hprest.exe type HPBios not available

I am using hprest.exe to set different Bios settings like ServerAssetTag which are located at the type HpBios.1.2.0

Now i have a problem with one ProLiant ML350 Gen9 out of 10, where hprest says that the type HPBios. is not available: Unable to locate instance for 'HPBios.'

If I use the command types than the problem ML350 Gen9 returns this:

SNMP returning degraded disk controller degraded

$

We use PRTG to monitor the health of a number of ProLiant Servers via SNMP.

One is an ML350 G6 running Server 2008 R2.  Before Christmas, PRTG started to warn that the disk controller on this server was degraded, which normally means a disk in the RAID has dropped.

The server has two SmartArray controllers, a P410i (4 x HDs) and a P212 (Ultrium drive only).

HP SSA reports no errors on the P410i but does show an orange warning for the P212.  The warning is that no configurable physical drives are attached.  Correct!

However, SNMP monitoring reports disk controller degraded - why?

Walking SNMP OIDs on the server returns:

.1.3.6.1.4.1.232.6.1.3.0 (System health) - 2

1.3.6.1.4.1.232.3.1.3.0 (Drive array health) - 3 (degraded)

The server has been in use August 2011 wtih this SA configuration but the degraded array only pop-up in December.  Have upgraded almost everything (drivers, firmware etc) I can find bar the system ROM.

Disabling the Dynamic Smart Array on a Gen8 from the RBSU CLI

I'm trying to find out how to disable the Dynamic Smart Array on my Gen8 Microserver so that the boot firmware just treats it as a normal SATA interface.

I can disable it from the GUI version of the RBSU and I can disable it OK using conrep in the scripting toolkit or from a customised kickstart, but I can't see the option in the RBSU CLI. Since I prefer to run ProLiant's headless using the VSP as the console it would make my life easier to be able to disable this feature from the RBSU CLI.

I'm running Linux (CentOS various versions, not that it matters) The OS just sees the disks unless I add the hpvsa driver and I'd prefer not to in this case.

I've got the 06/06/2014 revision of the J06 firmware.

Hello,

I would like to know how noisy would be a ML110 G9 with a E5-1650 v3 and 6 LFF drives?

This server may stand inside an openspace and the noise should be equivalent to clim ventilation and office printers.

thank you.

DL380 Included warranty vs 3yr NBD Care Pack

$

Hi,

My supplier has quoted a 3yr NBD care pack with a DL380. Looking at various documentation online, the DL380 comes as standard with a "3/3/3" warranty with NBD support as standard.

I asked my supplier about this, and their response was that the included warranty is "best endeavours", but adding the care pack makes it guaranteed NBD. Something about this doesn't sound quite right to me, and I can't find anything online that confirms it. On the opposing side, why would there even be a SKU for paid 3yr NBD support for the DL380 if it was already included?

If it makes any difference, the part number for the server is 768345-425 (a Top Value DL380), and the support pack quoted is U7AD9E.

Any information greatly appreciated.

Enabling P440ar cache on HP DL380 G9 problem!

Hi
I have a HP DL380 G9 server with a P440ar Raid Controller.
Im using five Samsung Pro 850 as RAID 5.
The benchmark of the disks by Crystal Disk or other benchmark softwares, show that speed of read/write on the raid volume is very very low(400/300/1/10 MB) ! but when i use RAID on standard HB SAS Disk  the speed is normal (1800/1600/21/200)
Seems that Samsung Pro 850 have raid problem on HP P440ar. or maybe HP P440ar have problem with  Samsung Pro 850!
I have 2 questions:
1.What is the best config for setuping five Samsung Pro 850 as a RAID volume on HP Server!? by which raid controller?
2.Why HP P440ar array utility configuration can't enable write caching when i use Samsung Pro 850, but can enable it with standard HP hard disks!?

The ACU message is "not present or not completely charged " , but my raid controller and battery of it already exists and already charged. The message never appear when i replace the Samsung SSD 850 Pro disks with HP SAS Disks.

Thank you for any help.

P410i controller - vmware esxi lost connectivity

$

Hello, I have an HP Proliant ML350 G6 with P410i controller. It's running VMware ESXi 5.5 U2. I'm having performance issues and I see an error many times a day in the esxi logs. I found some other similar discussions and it seems that I need to upgrade the driver and/or firmware to resolve the issue.

ERROR: Lost access to volume 5351d599-a5f47404-1c5c-1cc1dee8140a due to connectivity issues. Recovery attempt is in progress and outcome will be reported shortly.

Controller details:
Controller Status: OK
Hardware Revision: C
Firmware Version: 5.14
Cache Board Present: True
Cache Status: OK
Cache Ratio: 50% Read / 50% Write
Drive Write Cache: Enabled
Total Cache Size: 1024 MB
Total Cache Memory Available: 912 MB

ESXi Driver Details:
~ # cat /proc/driver/hpsa/hpsa0 | grep Driver
Driver Version: HP HPSA Driver (v 5.5.0.84-1OEM)
Driver Build: 01

This is the only server running the company's critical apps, so I need to be extra careful during this upgrade. To that end, my questions are:

1. I see firmware version 6.64 (B) is available and assume that is the best one to use?
http://h20566.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=3884318&swItemId=MTX_a8f0765b51594bf584992ddbe1&swEnvOid=4166

2. I see the firmware has several update methods, and for me I think the direct upgrade from the tech support console is the best way to go. Is this method reliable?

3. Should I upgrade the firmware first, then the driver? Or update the driver first?

4. The HP site lists this driver version as the latest. Is this the best one to use for this issue?

DL360 G7 PCIe riser SSD Xenserver boot

Greetings,

We have just aquired a DL360 G7 with intention of installing Xenserver on it and after installing PCIe to Sata adapter on the PCI riser with Samsung SSD the device does not seem to be recognized by the raid configuration utility, ie at post the PCIe is shown with unknown device status.

Wondering if I ought to just go ahead and try the Xenserver installation and see if Linux recognizes the drive. Not sure how else to get around issue as if the SATA adapter needs a driver I suppose I am out of luck using it as a boot device?

Thank you,

HPRest.exe Administrative permissions / Powershell BIOS Cmdlets based on RESTful?

Hello,

is there any particular reason why hprest.exe needs to be "Run as Administrator" on Windows? Communication with remote systems via HTTP/HTTPS should normaly not require administrative privileges.

Are there any plans to update the Powershell BIOS Cmdlets to use RESTful instead of SSH?
