DL120 G6 doesn't start (soon) and doesn't keep cmos settings, no fail detected

Hi All!

I have a  DL120G6 server, CPU G6950, RAM 2x1GB.
It has not been used for months, now I need it but I have some problems.
At every boot, all CMOS values are cleared, so ... no RAID, no IPMI/BMC.
The RTC-Battery signed 2.9v so I changed with a new 3.3v one, but nothing changed.

It hangs on SERVER ASSET TEXT message for a while (10 minutes at least!) then it starts.
When I put a cable into BMC net-port nothing happens (no lights) and no DHCP-request are sent on LAN.

Version of firmwares was : ILO 4.22A, BIOS O26 2011.04.14A
Now I updated them to: ILO 4.26A, BIOS O26 2013.07.01A
Nothing has changed.

There are no red-leds (not in front, not on board).
There are no messages at startup.

I really don't know what to think (and what to try), give me any idea, please.

HP DL385 G6 Server - Run 6GB/s Sata

Hi everyone,

I have a P410i Array card which I understand cannot run 6GB/s Sata, therefore, it reduces down to 3GB/s for Sata drives.

If I run a Sata drive with no raid configurations, just on it's own. Will I be able to run at 6GB/s? or is their a way I can run at 6GB/s?

The single drive is not running mission critical tasks so I'm willing to take the risk if it fails (automated backups)

ML350 G5 - Fully Loaded P200i RAID Controller

Hey there!

I have 2 G5's rocking here. one with 4x2Tb drives in RAID 5 running CentOS (containing 3Tb effective data)
The other one 2x 2Tb Drives running ESXi with some VM experiments on it. (you shall not be missed)
I would like to combine the 2. And virtualise my home server. + have some room to do experiments with VM's

However i have red up a bit but i still have some questions.

For 1:
The HP Smartarray controller P200i supports logical volumes up to 6Tb.  Is this correct?
Anyone here have 6x 2Tb drives in their G5 Drive Cage? Are there workarounds so i don't have to upgrade my RAIDcontroller?

For2:
Logical volume limit 6Tb.. So that means that i could theoretically have 2 RAID5 Arrays with 3x2Tb HDD's ?

For3:
If i decide to upgrade my RaidController. I would take a p800 since that supports RAID10.
Wich would yield a better IOPS score. Good pick?

Any Tips, Hints, Own experiences, are welcome!
Cheers,

Thomas

Hi all,

Help please with a problem:

I have HP DL360p Gen8.

At first I received the message on the status of fan8 - degradate. Then, next day it was powered off independently. Integrated management log:

fail1.png

Also i have this in iLO event log: Embedded Flash/SD-CARD: Restarted. Server power removed.

On what of the reasons it is switched off? Because of failure of fans or because of failure of SD?

SSD Wear Status "Not Supported"

Have ProLiant DL160 Gen8 servers with the P420 controller.  As an experiment, I mounted some cheap consumer grade Samsung 840 EVO SSDs into 3rd party carriers and everything worked great.  LEDs worked.  Smart Storage Administrator displayed the wear status (percentage of life remaining).  Everything worked perfectly, just like genuine HP parts.

Then I pulled the junky EVOs and put in some 850 PROs.  But then, the Smart Storage Admin showed wear status "not supported".

OK, so I removed the 850 PROs and put in Samsung Enterprise SM863s.  Still, wear status shows "not supported".

Does anyone know WHY the Smart Storage Admin console happily displayed wear status on the cheap-junk 840 EVO.... but not on the more expensive 850 PRO or even the much more expensive SM863 Enterprise SSDs?

I am VERY hesitant to put a machine in production without being able to monitor SSD wear, but I'm also NOT going to pay HP's horribly obscene prices for SSDs.... not when Samsung makes a highly durable Enterprise class SSD.

Your thoughts?

Can I use a P440AR 8 SFF to create 2 mirrored raid pairs ( 1 for the O/S and 1 for the data )?  If not, could someone recommend what I need to purchase.

HP DL380 G9 SAS issues

Hi Guys,

So i have received a new server with a P440ar controller card, 14 Sata disks and 2 SAS disks. The idea was to build the OS on the SAS disks however after going through the HP smart start software and deploying the OS to the SAS drives it no longer boots (it says the SAS disks had a failure, and have been detected again as they have been replaced), Now if i go back into the HP smart start software i can see the drives are disabled, If i enable them, The server will boot fine. However, I put a bit of software on the OS after which caused it to blue screen and again it disabled the drives. The 2 drives seems fine, No error lights and i had them working for a few days before i put the dodgy software on. Problem is i cant send this server out to a remote location knowing that if it has an issue its going to diable the drives.

I have installed the OS on SATA drives and it goes through the build process fine, no problems. So to me it seems like the SAS disks are having an issue but they are brand new.......Anyone got any ideas as i wouldnt expect them to be diabled? I have attached some pics. I have done things like change the slots etc.

Thanks in advance!

Hard Drive Options for ML110 G9, ML10 v2 or ML30 G9

I am looking to build a small Hyper-V server for 10 Users that will run 2 VM's, 1 VM a SQL server and the other will run a 3CX PBX.  Any of the ML110, ML30 or ML10v2 will meet the requirements in terms of processor, memory, NIC, iLO etc (my preference would be ML110 G9) however I would prefer to use 4 SSD's for storage in RAID 10 and would prefer to use the Samsung 850 Pro for this.  Will these three servers allow the use of these (non hot swap) or shall I recieve RAID controller/BIOS errors?

I've got two ML 350 G5s, how do I know what max quadcore to upgrade to?

ML350 G5 P/N 419521-005

ML350 G5 P/N 470064-837

i have both of those and it appears as though 419521-005's max is Xeon 53xx series quadcore processors and 470064-837 can take Xeon 54xx.

i know that ML350 G5s lasted through multiple generations of Xeon.

how can i tell for sure which max quadcore i can use with which one?

it appears both have 5000z chipsets

ML10 V2 pci-e video card issues

I just purchased a new ML10 v2 system. I'm trying to use my Quadro FX1400 that I had lying around (don't laugh, it's better than the onboard video). The system is going through POST and then reboots. I see that it has a red light flash on the front panel while rebooting. I tried turning off the onboard card just to see if that would do the trick, but no. Any ideas?

DL380 G7 +HP P222?

Hi guys,

i am building a web server with HP DL380 G7, 128Gb Ram, 2x Intel QuadCore XEON X5670; Vmware ESXi.

I am planning to replace stock P421 HP array controller with P222 because of better SSD support. Do you think it would make sense? I found on the HP site, that P222 is only compatible with G8, but read also multiple posts about people installing it on G7.

My second thought would be of using non-server SSDs in RAID1 mirror.

OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G 480GB`s

or

Samsung 850 PRO 500GB

Do you think it will be a proper setup?

Thanks

Best regards

Non 512e and 512e drives in the same RAID

Okay simple question, can you mix 512e and non 512e drives in the same raid? I have a raid full of non 512e drives(761477-b21), one of the drives in said raid went bad and I have a like drive (speed and cacpacity, one is 6g and one is 12g) that is 512e (765259-b21).   What I would like to do is use the 512e drives in to the raid with the non 512e drive that are still healthy.  If it would work but is not recomended i would also love to know more about why this is the case.

The box is a Gen9 DL380 with a 440AR.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi,

we own a Proliant DL160 Gen9 LFF (non hotplug) server and an additional P440 (along with the recommended Mini SAS cable option).

Now we wonder if it is possible to connect the drive cage (has 4 separated drive connectors) with the P440 controlller?

Thanks for any suggestions.

best regards,

HP Proliant ML350 G5 server goes unresponsive frequently

$

Hi There,

I have got an old ML350 G5 server with us just running with a ESXi 5.0. I have also got a single VM (win 2008 R2) running with it. There are just two disk (2x 73.4 GB, 15k RPM, SAS) connected on a RAID1.

Since two weeks, the server goes unresponsive very frequently leaving red LED's on the server. Thus, I had a quick read over the maintenance guide and found out that it shows the server internet/external health LEDs were flashing red while leaving the server not responsive.

However, later today I had the smartstart booted to do a diagnosis on the server to see if I can crawl any information.

I have all the information and the only error I have seen is that disk 1 is failed (attached).

What I wanted to know is, since its on RAID1 we can just replace a disk to rebuilt since it a mirror.. Can we do hotswap on this instance? also, is this the only reason that the server goes responsive frequently (which I cannot really think of since its a mirror).

Dl380 Gen9 LFF storage upgrade to 12 drives

Hi all,

I have a DL380p Gen9 LFF model (766342-B21) which has the standard 4 bayLFF  backplane board. I need to upgrade the storage to take at least 8 drives. I cannot find any details relating to this and the quick specs state that this cannot be upgraded in the field.

I did find an HP DL380- Gen9 spare parts list.

http://h20564.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c04438854

The 12 bay packplane board is listed in this along with the part number.

12-LFF backplane board (777284-001)

Can I simply remove the old 4 bay backplane board and fit a 12 bay backlane board? I assume I will need to install a Smart Array P440ar Controller to support 12 drives. I also expect that the data on the server will be lost in the process but this is a backup server and I will need to replace it if I cannot upgrade its storage anyway.

Has anybody done this before or know if it's possible? Or know if it definitely cannot be done?

Thanks you

NK
