Need help with drive firmware update

Hi.  I have a few DL380 G5s I bought from eBay.  A few days ago, one of the drives died.  I ordered new ones and popped one in last night.  I was thinking today "is it done rebuilding the array?" so I did some research to try to find software that can tell me what's going on with the array.  I ended up finding HP Smart Storage Administrator, which thankfully works on the DL380G5 /w Server 2012 unlike most things, grr.  Anyway, I run it and it said a drive needs a firmware update.  Did more research.  I finally found a page that had firmware.  I've no idea how to install it but thankfully there was instructions on the page.  Step one was "Place the HP Service Pack for ProLiant on a USB key using the HP USB Key Creator Utility".  I clicked the link to download HP Service Pack for ProLiant and found that one must have a warranty to get it, AUGH.

Sooo..  for those of us with secondhand ProLiants, how do we do the firmware upgrade on the drives?  Any advice would be most welcome :)

ML115 G5 and 8TB Hard Drives

Hi All,

Hopefully someone has tried this... Or has suggestions

I am looking to re-use my ML115 G5 with four 6 or 8 TB drives for a decent sized array (WD Greens (been using 750Gb so know they're ok)). Does anyone know if they are supported? I'll be using FreeNAS so the software should be ok... but will the hardware....?

The QuickSpecs say it only supports up to 2TB drives but my understanding is that in theory 8TB are not really any different (except for capacity).

Thanks Peeps :-)

Please tell me correct cable. I purscahed wrong one.

Create 3rd array (RAID1) with Smart Array P420i on DL380p Gen8

Hello all,

We have a DL380p Gen8 server with Smart Array P420i controller.

Till now we had 2 arrays with RAID1.

Recently we installed 2 additional disks, which were recognized immediately in Smart Storage Administation tool and are appearing as unassigned devices.

When I select them in order to create a new array the following information is appearing "Array cannot be created: The operation is not available."

I cannot find any way to create an array. Any ideas what should I do.

Thanks in advance.

Good afternoon.

There is an HP Proliant 380 G6, s/n: CZ201020JK.
It was established 6x3.5 HDD. I want to put the cart 8x2.5 HDD (496074-001 ). What to do this, and if at all possible? Where can I find the manual?
I looked at the server, there is (576323-001)

ML350 G6 will not boot with 2 X5670 CPUs

Hi, I'm really hoping someone can help with this as it is driving me crazy.

I have an ML350 G6 with 1 CPU (X5670, SLVB7) and 9 x 8GB Registered DIMMs (72GB). The server powers up and works perfectly. The CPU was recently upgraded from an E5506 SLBF8.

I would like to install a second CPU and another 9 x 8GB Registerd DIMMs (taking the RAM to 144GB).

The trouble is, when I install the second (matched) CPU the server will not boot.

When the second CPU is installed, if I go into iLO then it does not show the latest hardware, it shows the hardware from the previous boot, which suggest it is not POST'ing correctly. None of the hardware sensors show any data.

I have been swapping parts to try to identify the issue, and am now really scratching my head. So far I have tried:-

  • Adding a second 750W power supply.
  • Replaced the system board. Note the system board has product code 606019 which supports the higher end Xeons.
  • Added a fourth system fan.
  • Switched around the CPUs; both boot in socket one with only one CPU installed.
  • Switched around the RAM. All 19 DIMMs work in the sockets for CPU one.
  • Reset BIOS/cleared NVRAM using the dip switch on the system board.

I did suspect a faulty system board, but unless I am incredibly unlucky and have two that are DoA, then I'm not sure what else this could be.

Am I missing an obvious BIOS setting?

I should add that the two LEDs on the front panel are green, the LEDs on the two power supplies are green and there are no error LEDs showing on the system board.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

Hardware Diagnostics

Hello all,

I am currently on the hunt for a bootable dvd that can perform hardware diagnostics from HP. I am not sure if this exists or not so I figured I would ask. I have several ProLiant DL380 Gen7's that are starting to show signs of age and would like to have this in my toolkit.

Thanks!

Unable to install 2012 R2 on new server (Bluescreen)

We have just taken 3 DL360's GEN9's with 120GB SATA SSD's

We are trying to provsion them with 2012R2 Core Datacentre.

But were failing badly.

We get a dpc_watchdog_violation bluescreen.

So we have used the provisioning F10 to setup an array etc, got to the OS installation and clicked go.

When it has copied the files it reboots, then starts the OS installation loading, it copies various files in a command prompt and as it's about to bring up the first Windows 2012 install screen it bluescreens.

We have tried different ISO's , FLAT and non flat ISO's from different USB sticks, and also an ISO loaded through ILO virtual drive.

All end up with the same Bluescreen.

All servers are fully firmwared to death.

Has anyone else had this issue (We Just did some DL380's on 2008 R2 no issue just these ones have to be 2012 and its becoming more than frustrating a few days wasted now.

Any help be ace

ML350 G6 PCIe + fanspeed + bios

I have a ML350 G6 server and it appears that the server increases the fanspeed when i put any device inside a PCIe slot. Since i run this server as a home/office server this is highly annoying.

Questions are:

  1. does the latest BIOS resolve this annoying "feature" ?
  2. what is the minimum care pack to buy to be enabled to download the latest BIOS version?

The latest BIOS version is only downloadable when you have an active support contract, but HPE seems to have at least 80.000 care-pack versions.

DL585 G6 No HDD LEDs

Hi Guys,

Really hoping you can help me out here as I'm at my wits end with this. I've been in posession of a DL585 G6 since December 2014 and since I have had it the HDD LEDs have never worked, except on the initial boot when they go through the cycle of colours on power up.

I've got a mix of SATA and SAS drives, Drives 1-4 are SAS and 5-8 are SATA. I've replaced the backplane and RAID card to no avail. I've gone through masses of documentation and found nothing on this.

I'm aware that some HP servers have cables specifically for the activity LEDs, but have not been able to find anything on this for the DL585.

Can someone help me out please? Server is running a large number of VMs and I'd like to have a visual representation of I/O though these LEDs so any help would be massively appreciated.

Thanks,

Kai

Hello,

I have a few OLD DL360 G5 servers, currently running on a ILO 2 Version 1.43 firmware. I need to update it to the lastest supported verison 2..25 (due to ESOL) or 2.29 if possible. i have tried to update it directly to 2.29 via ILO Web interface, but failed. Looking closer, i found out there are like around 20 vesions of Ilo firmware between 1.43-2.29. I wonder if i need to do it step by step? really want to avoid that if i can, please let me know if you have any advises about this topic, thanks in advances.

help needed with HP ProLiant ML350 G6

hello.

i humbly turn towards you as i need help with already quite old server.

first ill tell you a little story about my situation.

me and my family bought a house in last summer. nice and tidy and very comfortable house indeed. but then winter came and as our house is primarily heated with electricity, it made me think what a waste this is. lots and lots of electricity is wasted and i could run several very powerful computers with that energy and still get the same amount of heat out of them but as i dont have any use of that kind of power i started to look some work for my pc's. i found boinc. now many of you might already know about boinc. in short, it is a software where anyone in anywhere can donate computing power to the project they please. help cure aids, cancer, help developing clean energy. i thought this was the thing i was really looking for! good use for the electricity i spend! now im generating heat with couple of my pc's but its not even close enough. radiators are still wasting electricity so i started to look something which had some serious power. i found old ProLiant ML350 G6 and it was very cheap. only problem is, it has only one 4-core CPU with very low TDP. its something but this thing can do so much more.

and finally to my question. sorry about long story. i tried to make it as short as possible.

i want to upgrade my proliant to 2-cpu 6-cores each.

im also missing CPU2 memory, cooler and the fan which is supposed to come with CPU upgrade kit.

where can i get them and which is the cheapest option? i dont need much memory to run boinc. all i need is lots of threads and more power/thread the better.

as we dont have much money, donations are also welcome. if you have fitting parts for this project but dont need them anymore you are very welcome to send them to me.

also, i can easily accommondate another HP server or anything powerful enough and i think we still need to use radiators.

Sincerely

Jarmo

ML 350 G5 with 2 PSU - suitable UPS ?

$

Hello,

This is my first post so please forgive if I make any mistake.

I’d like to apply UPS solution to company server that was last time change to HP ML350 G5 (2 x L5420, 2 x 300GB, 2 x 146GB) with 2 x redundant PSU DPS 800GB.

This is tower version, so I consider only non-rack solution.

Could you give me some hints how to select optimal UPS for this hardware ? Concreate proposal are welcome ;o)

Is it true that UPS should cover more than 2 x max output of particular PSU ? In my case UPS should have at least 2000 W (output power) + true sine wave ?

Thank you,

Andy

Product Name: : HP PROLIANT DL380 G9 SERVER
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Dear all,

Each time i "Shutdown" from windows session , after the shutdown message,  a front face LED turn into red and blue screen displays:

*** Hardware malfunction
Call your harware vendor for support
NMI: Channel Check / IOCHK
*** The system has halted ***

Windows seems to be terminated correctly because at the following reboot no error or warning message appears.

Note : If select Windows "Restart" does not give the error.

Do HP engineers or anybody have experience on this trouble ?

Thanks to all

David
