HP Proliant DL380 G7 won'tr post after memory upgrade

$

I have a Proliant DL380 G7 that intially had 1 x Xeon X5670 CPU and 36 GB RAM.   Life was good and the server ran solid and happy.

I decided to upgrade the box to 2 x Xeon X5670 and 48GB RAM.   I bought the proper CPU and also additional memory of the same exact kind as was in the box.  Both procs have the same stepping.

I installed the additional processor and re-installed all the RAM per the HP RAM guidelines. (basically 6 sticks per bank in channels A,B,C,D,E,F)

After I did all of this, the box wouldn't post during bios.  After messing around with the RAM for like 3 hours, I came to find out that ANY installation of RAM in bank 2 causes the machine not to boot.  I even just installed 3 sticks per bank in channels A, B, C.   Nothing.

If I keep all the RAM just in bank 1, then the box boots up and it sees both processors.

My question is this:  I'm thinking the motherboard is bad, but I'm not entirely sure.  Is it possible that the unit would see and operate on both processors, but somthing about that second processor is causing the unit not to want to reconginize bank 2?

Thanks,

GZ

FBWC battery on DL360 Gen9 Base Model

We plan to buy DL360 Gen9 Base Model (755262-B21) with preinstalled P440ar/2Gb.

We need Write Caching to be available on server.

Surfing datasheets it is not clear is this server has FBWC battery installed? Or should we buy it as an option 727258-B21 ?

As I can see when buing P440ar as an separate option kit (726736-B21) we'll get the battery as well:

NOTE: HP Smart Array P440ar/2GB FBWC controller option kitincludes the HP Smart Storage Battery the backup power source necessary to protect the data on the  Flash-backed Write Cache as the P440ar will generally be your default P-series controller and will require the HP Smart Storage Battery and therefore included.

But what about preinstalled P440ar?

Thanks,

Andrey

Smart Array P410 in Slot 4 (physical drive predictive failure)

I am using the HP System Management to monitor my drives and other parts of my HP ProLiant DL 160 G6 Server.

I have noted that in my physical drives (of 4 drives), the Port: 2I Box: 1 Bay: 2 drive is showing a predictive failure.

You can see what I'm referring to from the attached screenshots here.

I would like to replace this hard drive.  These are hot-swap drives.  Can I replace this drive and the RAID will figure out what I have done and do it's magic on the new drive?  I could only hope it's that easy of a fix.  Can anyone confirm that all I need to do is replace this drive and I'm good to go?  If I can just simply replace the drive, I will do this when I can power off the server (even if I can do it while the power is on, I'll feel more comfortable w/the power off).

Thanks in advance for your reply.

which Rackkit for DL385 G5p?

Found rack-kits 487244-001 for my G5p server.

But are rack-kits for G5 (without "p") fitting, too? They are just about 20-30% of G5p's rack-kits.

Are those rack-kits (487244-001 and hte G5 ones) limited in length or will they fit in any cabinet? Kits for other cases are delivered in 500 and 600mm in length for reason.

Thank you

Upgrade B140i to P440/4GB, retain Array?

$

Hello

I have an DL180gen9 with the integrated Smart Array b140i Software RAID Controller.
I have 5 x 4TB SATA Disks in one big Array (RAID 5), with two Partitions (one with 100GB for the System, the rest is for Data from our Backups).
As this controller is not capable of expanding (which is what I need) an existing Array I'm searching for an alternative.

My question ist now:

- Can I upgrade my DL180gen to the P440/4GB (726821-B21) or P440/2GB (820834-B21)?
- Can I do this upgrade and migrate the existing Array from the B140i to the new Controller without Data loss, even if the System C:/ (Boot Partition) is in the same Array? Will the System be still be bootable in UEFI Mode as it is now?

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks in Advance,

Stefan

Offline Diagnostics for ML150 G6

"Hello,

I have a ML150 G6 and it's acting a bit tweaky.  I went online to get the offline diagnostic utility that I've used in the past, but can't find it anywhere.  Someone on the forum mentioned that it's been replaced by the easy setup cd, but the only thing listed in the ML150 G6 CD-ROMs section is "* RECOMMENDED * HP QLogic P3P Flash Update Kit".  I'd really like to give this machine a once overy.  Can someone point me toward the correct place to get an offline diagnostic program for ML150 G6?  The Product number is 518174-005 if that helps.

Thanks,

Jeff

P800 Additional external array appearing as identical, internal disks

$

Hello all,

I have a DL380 G5 with a P800 RAID controller. I have a four-disk internal array that came with the server, and now a SAS array attached externally by the SFF8088 port, which is split to four SATA ports on the backside of a SAS backplane.

Anyway, my issue is this:

When I connect the new devices to the external port on the card, they appear as follows with hpacucli ctrl all show config:

Smart Array P800 in Slot 3 (sn: PAFGF0P9SY407M)

array A (SAS, Unused Space: 0 MB)

logicaldrive 1 (205.0 GB, RAID 5, OK)

physicaldrive 4I:1:1 (port 4I:box 1:bay 1, SAS, 72 GB, OK)
physicaldrive 4I:1:2 (port 4I:box 1:bay 2, SAS, 72 GB, OK)
physicaldrive 4I:1:3 (port 4I:box 1:bay 3, SAS, 72 GB, OK)
physicaldrive 4I:1:4 (port 4I:box 1:bay 4, SAS, 72 GB, OK)

array B (SAS, Unused Space: 0 MB)

logicaldrive 2 (1.8 TB, RAID 0, OK)

physicaldrive 4I:1:0 (port 4I:box 1:bay 0, SAS, 2 TB, OK)

unassigned

physicaldrive 4I:1:0 (port 4I:box 1:bay 0, SAS, 2 TB, OK)
physicaldrive 4I:1:0 (port 4I:box 1:bay 0, SAS, 2 TB, OK)
physicaldrive 4I:1:0 (port 4I:box 1:bay 0, SAS, 2 TB, OK)

Expander 250 (WWID: 50014380060273BF)

SEP (Vendor ID HP, Model P800) 249 (WWID: 50014380060273BE)

So two main issues:

* They all show up on 4I, which is (I assume) the internal port. Should they not show up on 2E or something similar?

* They all show up as 4I:1:0. Obviously this makes it impossible to put them into a logical array such as RAID 5 or 6. You can see here I've set one up as a single logical drive for temporary use.

Another piece of data:

If I connect to the other external port, only one or two of the devices show up, also with the same 4I assignment.

Am I doing something wrong here?

Thanks,
Colin

Adding 2nd P400 controller in ProLiant ML370 G5

$

As stated i have a ProLiant ML370 G5 that needed additional disk space, I had to purchase a second P400 controller and drive cage.  After installing the parts and disks, I booted to the Array Conifguration Utility and created an array on the new disks.  After booting into Windows (it is 2008 64 bit), installing drivers for the controllers fails.  If I try to install driver from Device Manager I get the error "The requested device regitsry key does not exist."  This was installing the latest avilable driver (http://h20564.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=1156881&swItemId=MTX_88ab78f337f744edbd3f16a4cd&swEnvOid=4024). If i try to run cpqsetup.exe from the extracted download I get:

The installation procedure did not complete successfully. An error occurred during the setup process.

You may look at the setup log file for more details if desired.

Additional Information:
Installation failed on at least one device. One of the devices may have been deleted through Device Manager and a reboot may be necessary to complete the driver installation for this device.

Press the 'Close' button to exit Setup.

Rebooting doesn't change anything.  The log referenced contains the same text.  Process Monitor suggests the installer is trying to read HKLM\software\Policies\microsoft\windows\DeviceInstall\Settings and cannot, the DeviceInstall key does not exist.  I'm assuming it's related to either the driver and/or because there are two controllers, but I'm at a loss what to try next.

Thanks,
Matt

I've got an HP Proliant ML350 G6. All green lights, nothing in iLO logs, IML, Diagnostics.

Yet for some reason every so often (haven't timed it but at least 10 minutes in between I'd guess) I get 3 series of 2 short beeps

Beep-beep, beep-beep, beep-beep

I'm using this as a home lab and it sits in my living room. Any ideas on how to diagnose this would be greatly appreciated,

HP PROLIANT ML 350 GEN9 207-invalid Memory Configuration - Processor n, DIMM n

$

Hello

First excuse my bad English as i'm French
We are setting up a new server that will be dedicated to virtualisation.

Our Config :
-HP Proliant ML350 Gen9
-Ram 12*16 go = 192 go (same spec for each barret, came from HP , HPE smart memory   2R*4 PC4-2133P-R kit))
-drive : 4 disk SAS 10K of 1.2 TO + 2 disk SAS 10K of 300 go
-One HP smart array controller card P440

Our Issue :
**At the boot i've got theses messages :
207-invalid Memory Configuration - Processor 1, DIMM 2
Incorrectly installed.
Please refer to memory Population Rules in documentation
This Memory will not be utilized

207-Memory initialisation error on Processor 1, DIMM 2.
The operating system may not have access to all of the memory
installed in the system.

207-Memory initialisation error on Processor 2, DIMM 1.
The operating system may not have access to all of the memory
installed in the system.

without specific beep signal
So i wanted to swap the processor 1 dimm2 with an another one in order to check if it is was a configuration order problem or a real problem of the dimm (corrupted , damaged by hand manipulation and static electricity involved … )
During this operation i discover that my 1st configuration which was this :
 see 1stconfig.png attached

... was obviously false I i refer to to the dimm population order scheme :
 see dimmpoporder.png attached

So i move to this second configuration (and still make the switch of 2 dimm)
 see  2ndconfig.png attached

Or this 2nd configuration give me this error message during the boot :

 207-invalid Memory Configuration - Processor 1, DIMM 2
Incorrectly installed.
Please refer to memory Population Rules in documentation
This Memory will not be utilized
207-invalid Memory Configuration - Processor 1, DIMM 5
Incorrectly installed.
Please refer to memory Population Rules in documentation
This Memory will not be utilized

207-Memory initialisation error on Processor 1, DIMM 2.
The operating system may not have access to all of the memory
installed in the system.

207-Memory initialisation error on Processor 1, DIMM 5.
The operating system may not have access to all of the memory
installed in the system.

207-Memory initialisation error on Processor 2, DIMM 1.
The operating system may not have access to all of the memory
installed in the system.

What's wrong ?
*Do i completely miss interpreted the order scheme ?
For me with 12 dimm so 6 dimm for each processor it's
For precessor 1 white bank (ABCD) first then black (EF) (blue not concerned)
For processor 2 white bank first then black (EF) (blue not concerned)
*or maybe there is two pb combining themself ?

BIOS versus UEFI: are you using 1982 software?

$

This is more in the Linux vein, but could apply to Windows I would think.  This is not an ongoing problem as we are returning these Gen8 servers for Gen9, so this is more of a rant and hopefully a warning to others.
You could be using software from 1982 without knowing it. That's right, in the firmware of most PC hardware.
We recently developed a replication and rollout process for our linux workstations (desktop and rack servers) which worked for Lenovo P300 but failed mysteriously for the "HP ProLiant DL320e Gen8 v2 Server". The error involved a GPT (versus the MBR that was created for us on the HP server). You can look up these terms on the internet, but I can tell you briefly that the "Master Boot Record" technology dates from the early 80s and is implemented by BIOS firmware, while "GUID Partition Table" is more modern and associated with the newer UEFI firmware standard. Actually, there are even later firmware standards which are open-source.
We just obtained Lenovo P310 that has both but defaults to BIOS. The HP only had BIOS. Not sure how hard they would be to flash, but we sent them back for Gen 9 servers. One limitation of BIOS is a 2T max hard drive, there are kludge workarounds to this as with most limits.
It was almost funny: investigating, I went into the BIOS. Then I called over a few people to try and guess what I had on the screen: TRS-80, Commodore-65, IBM-XT and so forth from the older guys. The young guys were miffed. So am I. Why would a computer company sell this garbage?
