Hello,

I'm trying to boot SLES 11 SP3 on a HP G9 DL380 server with RAID p380 in UEFI. I have this configuration in my bootloader (iPXE) :

Code:
kernel https://server/sles11-x86_64/disc1/boot/x86_64/loader/linux splash=silent install=https://xxx autoyast=https://xxx load_ramdisk=1 dud=0 textmode=0 edd=on initrd=initrd
initrd https://server/sles11-x86_64/disc1/boot/x86_64/loader/initrd
boot

But I'm getting a kernel panic

Code:
VFS: Cannot open root device "(null)" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

Can you help me to solve the issue please?

Smart Array and mix 10K/15K HDD

I have HP DL380е G8 with P420FBWC and some SAS 10K 300Gb in RAID5.
I also have a free SAS 15K 300Gb.
Can I mix these drives in the same array ( logical drive)?
Interested stability, rather than the performance increase.
As the controller will work out a situation where neighboring drives in a single array differently respond to requests to read or write?
Thank you

Alex

Hi,

I try to put in DL 160 Gen9 a  SmartArray P410.

I can configure the SA with the SSA, but I can not boot the Server in in the legacy boot mode.

I updated the whole server with SPP 2016 04.

Zou have an idea why not?

DL 360 G6 firmware upgrade - Entitlement Required?

Hello. Just inherited a DL 360 G6 with the BIOS date 3/1/2010. I read somwhere in another post in this forum, that it should be possible to download the firmware as long as it is not the last version available, but wherever I go it seems only possible with a contract as listed bellow:

http://h20565.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=MTX_84e88dd193934ef18375a4ae7d&lang=en-us&cc=us

http://h20565.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=3884321&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4103

I was trying to upgrade the firmware because I'm having trouble to install Oracle Linux 7. I get a prompt not much after this message: "The BIOS has corrupted hw-PMU Resources (MSR 38d is 330)" for which I've proceeded as suggested in

http://h20564.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=mmr_kc-0126190

but no result. Now I'll try to install Oracle Linux 6 and let you know if it will work.

thanks and regards.

Where does B140i store array configuration information?

Where does the Dynamic Smart Array controller B140i store array configuration information? Is it all on the drives? Or is there an internal memory?

If a motherboard with the B140i controller needs to be replaced, can I just plug in all of the drives and the controller will automatically know how the arrays were configured? If not, how can I make a backup of the configuration information and restore it on the new controller?

Monitoring CPU temperature on HP DL360p Gen8 / DL360 Gen9 running ESXi 6.0

Hello everyone. I have a mixed DL360p/DL360 (gen 8 / gen 9) cluster that I want to set up SNMP monitoring on. From my reading it appears that I need to use OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.232.6.2.6.8.1.4.0.1 but when I do an snmpwalk or use any other utility I don't see that one, nor do I see another one that has board or CPU temperature.

I found a few posts that say I need the HP Insight management agent installed, but I haven't been able to find it and I don't know if I can install it on ESXi 6.0.

Right now I'm focused on the gen8 monitoring but if there's anything special for the gen9s I would appreciate that info as well as that's the next project.

Thanks!

Need help hooking up DL380 to MSA 2040

Hello everyone. Please forgive me if this is in the wrong forum, and feel free to move to the correct one. I'm doing a project to help out my church, and I have honestly never done anything on this level before with servers, which they are fully aware of and just appreciate the help. They've purchased an HP Proliant DL380 G9 and an MSA 2040 12 bay LFF for additional storage needs. I'm at a loss on exactly what all I need (hardware and cables) to get the MSA 2040 hooked up to the Proliant. What is the best/proper way to hook them together? Do we need to purchase additional hardware like cards or sfp modules, or do we just use the built-in connections? And what cables? This is the hardware we are dealing with:

Boot from PCIe SSD on ML350G6

Hello, my Friends

I have got a ML350 G6 server. I use it as a workstation.  BIOS  is a latest ( 16. 08. 2015.)

I would like to speed up the operation so I bought a Samsung SSD which is M.2 PCIe interface surface (MZHPV256HDGL). I insert the SSD to the server by an ASUS (Hyper M.2 X4 mini) card.

The OS (Microsoft Winsows 10) was originally on SAS RAID array. When the machine is started, it was all right to use the SSD. Could read and write. I thought I put the OS from array to the SSD. But the Windows Installer would say: this is not bootable drive. Someone has managed to make bootable PCIe card?

(HP produced such accelerator card :  http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/accelerators/index.html#!view=grid&page=1

Someone has experience with this? These can be installed? Bootable? If yes, then the ASUS-Samsung why not?)

Thanks in advance for the help.

ML370 G3 - SCSI Format

Hello,

I am currently working on a Proliant ML370 Gen 3 server . I would like to format the six SCSI drives in this system, and unfortunately I don't have any other system to connect them to in order to complete the task.

The machine features an HP Smart Array 641 Controller and an Adaptec 9160LP Ultra160 SCSI Controller. Despite being an IT technician, to be perfectly honest my experience with RAID and SCSI controllers is extremely limmited, so I'm not really sure what the distinction between these two components is.

Anyway, the things I have tried are running the Smart Start disk; this has an Erase feature, but doesn't format the drives. I've also gone into the Adaptec BIOS/configuration (by pressing Ctrl + A at startup). From what I've read this does have a format feature, however when I go into the drive utility section where it does a scan for SCSI devices, it shows the HP controller but not the drives themselves. I know that's a little vague, I will try and provide screenshots shortly.

If anyone has experience with this kind of SCSI configuration I would greatly appreciate your input. If anyone knows of a disk wiping application, paid or otherwise that is known to have the right drivers for these kind of controllers that would also be fantastic.

Thanks in advance,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but I have a Proliant Microserver N40L running WIndows Home Server. I just moved and, in the process, lost the key to the drive bay. Can someone direct me to a replacement source?

Thanks in advance.

HP server Compatibliity with other server infrastructure

Is there a way to integrate HP servers into a Cisco/NetApp Flexpod (managed by Cisco UCS)?   My guess is that I would need to either purchase more Cisco USC servers or change out the entire Converged Virtual Infrastructure, but I would like to be sure.  Any thoughts?

Boot with no effect

I have 5 Proliant Microserver and all works well. The 5th one has a new HDD and wasn't setup before. When trying to boot from either a USB or DVD iso I get no response. The biggest issue is there is no display on the monitor. I swapped monitors, cabled and even added a graphics PCIe with no luck. Is there any form of diagnostic that can be run without me actually being able to see anything on a monitor?

How do you upate firmware on a DL380 G7?

Hi,

I got a GL380 G7 that was taken offline by a customer. I work mainly with networks and are not very familiar with server stuff, so I got into a bit of trouble when I tried to reinstall the server.

Booting the server, the ILO and so on all works fine. The server has a ILO advanced license and I can install stuff remotely. I first installed ESXi 6.0 using the HP Custom ISO, and it worked perfectly. I then tried installing Ubuntu Server 16.04 (instead of ESXi) and got stuck on the network interfaces. The Linux installation finds them, but cannot use them, DHCP fails, I cannot see any MAC address on the switch port it's connected to, but the interface is up. And it worked with ESXi. I tried Debian 8 and Ubuntu Server 12, same error (Debian says it need firmware for the Broadcom NICs though).

Looking around the web I saw a few recommendations on firmware update. I've been fiddeling around a while with that, I need someone to clarify how firmware updates work.

1. Is HP SUM something ment for large installations? AS I understand it the SUM ISO is just a tool and does not contain any firmware by itself? I tried to boot the ISO, but got the error message "No baseline found". Didn't investigate further.

2. Does firmware updates require an existing windows installation? When I look at what's available to download, pretty much everything is under the Windows section, and nothing under Linux or "OS independent".

3. Are the firmware OS independent? Or do you flash e.g. NIC firmware for ESXi or Windows Server respectivly?

4. If I want a pure Ubuntu Server och Debian installation, must I first install Windows Server, then apply a support pack?

Thanks in advance!

Installing NIC on an HP DL180 Gen 6

Hi There,

I have previously posted "Expanding network on a DL180 Gen6" and as per the post suggestion I have bought NC360T network adapter. However, now I'm finding it difficult to install as the PCI cage is connected to the board while another is connected to the PCI cage slot.

What I wanted to know is whether, do i have to remove the PCI cage fully to install the NIC as I couldn't install it without removing it. Quiet confused and frustated with the PCI cage design as I couldn't stuff in the NIC.

Hiya Guys, I realy hope some of you experts can help.

I purchased the HP Gen7 Microserver just a few days ago, i had a few issues trying to installin windows 2012 R2 through Intelligent Provisioning due to license check and from that i formatted the drives. Now, im unsiure if related but since i carried out this format i now have numerous errors and my server will not boot to Intelligent Provisioning when pressing F10 and i get the below 2 errors when i do. I have now disconnected both my Samnsung SSD 750 EVO and my WD 3TB Green HDD, no USB's are connected.

Attempting to Boot from NIC

Non System disk or disk error

REeplace and strike any key.

And

PXE-E61: Media Test Failure , check cable.

I would like to return the server back to factory settings as received, can anyone recomend how to do this? i can access via iLO if needed using virtualk drive.

appreciate any help on this.

DL380 G4 does not boot, no bios screen, both PCI-X ethernet cards show no lights (activity or link)

$

Following a power outage with a UPS failure the server will not boot. Connecting a know good VGA screen shows nothing on boot. The USB ports are dead and do not even provide power for mouse or keyboard lights.

Front panel lights are all correct and green. The motherboard ethernet port shows link and periodic activity. The two quad ethernet PCI-X cards show no activity or link on any port. The PCI cage does show AC power light to it.

I have reseated all 6 memory cards and the PCI cage. I have tried one then the other power supply as well as both with no change.

I can connect to ilo through the serial port and it is responsive. The only thing the logs shows is low voltage on the RAID card battery, the battery needs to be replaced but should not stop the system from booting.

The status lights on the motherboard are consistent 0100 0001.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I will keep working on testing various components, but I may just order a replacement motherboard. One of the two motherboard ethernet ports is already dead from a power tranient about 2 years ago (long story).

Any comments, suggestions, recommendations or ideas are welcome.

Thanks
