Update Blade BIOS without OS through SUM

Hello,

I am wondering if is possible to update the BIOS of a collection of Blades through the Smart Update Manager (SUM) if there is no O.S. installed on the blades. If I add the blades to SUM as iLO node I can update the only the iLO.

Cheers!

Internal Drive Enclosure Port Numbering - explanation?

$

I have a DL380 Gen 10 and DL325 Gen10 with identical P408i-a SR array controllers.

When I look at the physical drives in each server (through ILO or using ilorest) I see that the DL380 Gen10 shows the drives as follows:

[1]: 1I:3:3
[2]: 1I:3:2
[3]: 1I:3:1

This is exactly as I would have expected [Controller Port (Internal)]:[Box]:[Bay]

However, when I run this on the DL325 Gen10 it seems to add an extra character which I cannot determine its meaning!

[1]: P1I:1:1
[2]: P1I:1:2

Does anyone know what this added "P" means and why it appearing?!?!?!?!

ml350p gen8 fan noise with HP Nvidia Quadro 4000

Hello,

I recently bought a proliant ML350p gen8 without video card. I would like to use it as a workstation.

It works very wall, all 4 fans are working at 6% (reported by ILO interface).

Then I bought the recommended video card HP Nvidia Quadro 4000 and insert it into PCI Slot 6 and connect the extra power connector. When I power on the server, everything is ok except than fan 1 and 2 throw up to 36%.

I already read all posts about the fan noise issue in ml350 Gen8 with unknown card in PCI slot (HP said that it's coded "by design"). But the card is recognized by the bios and recommended by HP in QuickSpecs.

If I remove the card, the server come back at 6% for all fans.

Unfortunatly the warranty is expired..

Of course, firmwares are up to date (through last SPP) and also the nvidia driver.

Any help will be appreciated.

Regards,

JC

HPE G9 smart start / Intelligent Provisioning

Hi All,

I have noticed in the recent release of the HPE G9s I can see information for Operating System Environment in Insight Diagnostics on the fresh server without any OS installed.

It is showing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12

Intelligent Provisioning via ILO I believe it is based on CoreOS.

It could be smartstart itself using SUSE?

Smart Array E200i stuck on "Ready for rebuild"

$

ProLiant ML350 G5 running SLES 11 in a RAID5 configuration.

I've been installing new SAS drives in our array, one at a time and waiting for each rebuild successfully before adding the next drive.  The last drive I installed resulted in numerous write errors on the swap-device and services becoming slow and sluggish.  Disable the swap file for the short term has alleviated any slow downs.  However, the array is still showing a status of "ready for rebuild" with no further activity.  It's trying to rebuild the boot partition (/dev/cciss/c0d0).  The HPSMH is showing drive 6 as having 14961 read errors.  That number has not increased since turning off swap.

/var/log/messages only seems to report errors on the "swap-device" and not necessarily on any real data area.  And it's write errors, whereas hpsmh reports read errors.

The drive POST complained about is in 1I:1:3.
but
hpsmh reports read errors on the drive 2I:1:6

Those are the 2 most recent drive swaps I performed.

I have tried booting from a linux livecd and used a DD command to image the drives/partitions.  It was going excruciatingly slow on the boot partition because of the disk errors so I proceeded to image the other drives/partitions.  As we got into the backup process it was going to take 15 hours to complete and then another 15 to restore once the array was reconfigured after removing the faulty drives.  That was not feasible so that planned was scrapped.

SO, at this point, kind of stuck.  Thought about throwing a USB 3.0 expansion card in to increase the throughput of the backups but turns out this server does not respond well to USB 3.0 because of its age.

My question is this:  If I remove the drive (bay 6) that hpsmh is reporting as having read errors while logical drive 1 is stuck on "ready for rebuild" am I going to destroy my raid?  Same goes for the drive that /var/log/messages reports as having write errors, if I remove that drive and install a fresh drive, will I destroy the raid and/or boot partition?

I'm not terribly fluent with linux or raid configuration so let me know if I'm not clear with any of this.   I have a diagnostic file created with hpacucli if that would be helpful.  My other option is to upgrade the server itself due to its age.  Was planning to upgrade servers this year anyway.

I have a used server HP PROLIANT ML350 G5. Which Windows OS should I install? Windows Server or other Windows software. On the other hand, what should I do to prepare the server hard disks. For now, with an old version of Windows Server, I have not arrived. Can not partion the main disk. The buyer had installed Windows 10 for tests only. Do I have to do it ?

Hi,

This card has been working fine. Doing some testing and switched it to min. power mode using SSA and now it's not detected at all - in BIOS or SSA (offline one or Windows).

The LED on the card itself does flash green on and off continuously as with all other HPE controller cards.

This is a "legacy" only BIOS HPE system (but I can't find anything to say min. power mode only works in UEFI systems).

Any ideas?

Thanks

We have a ProLiant BL460c Gen9 running on Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter.

We have noticed that hprest.exe is running the following .dll in the background.

Any idea how is this triggered and why is hprest.exe tring to run these .dlls?

c:\windows\temp\_mei21446\_ssl.pyd

c:\windows\temp\_mei147645\pythoncom27.dll

HP ML310e G8 & HP P812

Hi All,

Does anybody know if the HP P812 SAS RAID Controller will fit in the HP ML310e Gen8?

The card itself looks large in the picture and I wouldn’t want to waste money on a controller that doesn’t fit, but it is at a very good price.

Any input would be appreciated

It seems some of these servers used battery packs and others used capacitors.  Which server configurations used capacitors?

Dual CPU and Core Count

Hello,

Is it possible to have a pair of CPUs in a DL360 G10 but have a different number of cores enabled in the BIOS for each CPU.

I.e

CPU1 - 18 Cores with all cores enabled in BIOS

CPU2 - 18 cores with only 6 cores enabled in BIOS

I know this may seem like an odd thing to ask but we'd like a level of ganular control for SQL licensing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ilo 4 firmware upgrade path

Evening everyone.

I am supporting 8 DL560 Gen 8 servers which are all showing signs for the nand bug and will need to upgrade the ilo firmware to try fix it before taking further steps. I have been advised by HPE support that I can upgrade straight from 2.03 to 2.70 without intermediate steps but I recall with ILo2 & 3 there were usually several steps required for large firmware jumps. Could someone avdise me which versions I should use as intermediate steps for the upgrade?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Andrew

Hello all,
when logging in to the ILORest application installed on the server, we have to use plain usernames and passwords.

ilorest.exe
login --url $server -u $username -p $password

This works like it should, unfortunatly i do not want to put the password plain in a script.

is there a way to make the password secure?
or is there a way to create a ilo user that can "repair" iml logs but not change anything else ?
