Proliant 350ml g5 crazy shutdowns

Hi

I got a strange problem with a costumer of mine... They have a 350ml g5

The server randomly shuts down with internal led blinking red. The motherboard is showing amber led for cpu 1 and the red one led near the VGA about i cant find any documentation.

When it shuts down i cant power up the server any more with a power button. I have to  take out the powercord and plug it in again and then the server boots up complety normal and works until the next random shutdown (1-2 times per week)

Now if the cpu failed (which the led indicates) the server would boot again in my opinion.

anyone had that kind of problem?

thanks

Very slow speed issues in ESX 5.1/5.5 with BL460c and nc382m in iSCSI

Hi all,

After doing a couple of days research and trying firmware and driver updates I run out of ideas on what could be the problem with a Bladeserver BL460c and a mezzanine card nc382m (Broadcom 5709S - 1Gb 2-port).

I've tried with the following combinations:

HP custom ESXi 5.1.0 Update2 5.66.28:

    driver scsi-bnx2i                     2.7a.03.v50.2-1OEM.500.0.0.472560     Broadcom

HP ESXi 5.5.0 1746974-HP-5.72A.3-Jun2014 -

    driver - scsi-bnx2i                     2.78.76.v55.1-1OEM.550.0.0.1331820     Broadcom
    driver - scsi-bnx2i                     2.710.50.v55.1-1OEM.550.0.0.1331820    Broadcom (latest version from VMWare's website, dated 30-Oct-2014)

I've configured the card following the instructions of VMWare for 'Dependent hardware iSCSI' which is the case of the mezzanine card I'm using. I also followed the instructions in 'HP Virtual Connect with iSCSI Cookbook'. I'm just using one of the NICs on that card, leaving the other one unconfigured but I'm planning to use it for Round Robin multipath once I realize why is it so slow on reading. Creating a VM with CentOS minimal, the storage is an iSCSI SAN that is where the VMDK of the VM is stored at, and running the following commands this is what I get:

Writing - from RAM (1GB) to disk:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/test bs=4k count=512k
524288+0 records in
524288+0 records out
2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 16.6002 s, 129 MB/s

After this test I create a test file with random info the following way: dd if=/dev/urandom of=/test2 bs=4k count=512k

Reading - from disk to /dev/null

dd if=/test of=/dev/null bs=4k count=4k (only 4k as it will take a very long time to complete)
4096+0 records in
4096+0 records out
16777216 bytes (17 MB) copied, 70.1791 s, 239 kB/s

The output from hdparm:

hdparm -t /dev/sda1

/dev/sda1:
 Timing buffered disk reads:   2 MB in 29.53 seconds =  69.35 kB/sec

If you need them, I will share the current VConnect and ESXi network and/or storage configuration, but before jumping into any conclusion, please, be aware that using exactly the same settings except for the mezzanine card which I replaced for a nc553m (Emulex 10Gb 2-port). These are the results:

Writing - from RAM (1GB) to disk:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/test bs=4k count=512k
524288+0 records in
524288+0 records out
2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 18.7712 s, 114 MB/s

After this test I create a test file with random info the following way: dd if=/dev/urandom of=/test2 bs=4k count=512k

Reading - from disk to /dev/null

dd if=/test2 of=/dev/null bs=4k count=512k
524288+0 records in
524288+0 records out
2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 17.9035 s, 120 MB/s

Also note that I'm using a HP 1/10Gb-F VC-Enet module which limits the downlinks to 1GB so there is no reason for paying such a high price for 10GB mezzanine cards when the VC module is limiting it to 1GB anyway.

As the only difference is the mezzanine card, the Emulex is a 'Hardware Independent iSCSI card' and the configuration is slightly different than for the Broadcom. Everything else is exactly the same: same slot, same VConnect modules, same transceivers, same iSCSI SAN, same VM, same volume, same Bladeserver, same ESXi version.

I don't know if I could be misconfiguring something or missing an important point. Please, let me know if you need more information or to run any command as this is a testing environment and I'm free to test anything.

Thanks!

DL385 G6 server reboots during CD Boot of VMware ESXI 5.5

Ok, so I'm trying to load Vmware from a boot CD on my DL385 G6 server. During it is software load, the server just reboots..locks up and reboots rather.

I was looking into maybe doing a BIOS update, but it looks like the HP driver page for this server is dead/down.

Any ideas?

wrong Temperature settings on DL380 G8

Hi,

I get a temperature alarm reported on and off on my HP DL 380 Gen 8. I noticed the following after troubleshooting.

The Threshold of the POWER SUPPLY BAY is reported in ILO as:

14-P/S 1  Power Supply  1  12   OK  75F  Caution: N/A; Critical: N/A  15-P/S 2  Power Supply  1  12   OK  79F  Caution: N/A; Critical: N/A

but when I check using CLI, I get

Sensor   Location                           Temp           Threshold

#14         POWER_SUPPLY_BAY 25C/77F      0C/32F
#15          POWER_SUPPLY_BAY 27C/80F     0C/32F

This causes an alarm to be generated, because the threshold will always be exceeded.

How can I set the threshold to be N/A like in the ILO?

DL320e Gen8 v2 Drive options

$

Hi, I hope someone can help.

Ive got a DL320e Gen8 V2 server with the two LFF non-hot plug drive blanks.

From what I can see, there is no actual backplane to support Gen8 Drive trays. From what I can see, its the following part thats fitted..:-

http://partsurfer.hp.com/ShowPhoto.aspx?partnumber=725275-001

Can I fit an HP Gen8 Hard drive in the new carrier and this means the LEDs will not work?

I see other Gen8 Models have the B120i controller that allows Gen8 Drive tray LED control, could I fit the Hot-Plug Backplane for 2 LFF and use this with the B120i controller for a pair of LFF disks?

I dont care about "hotswap" as such, I just want a pair of G8 drives in the front with the LEDs working in SATA mode.

If I went for the SFF backplane and front bezel, does this mean the only way of getting the 2.5" drives working as SATA is to connect the SFF backplane to an internal RAID card? I cannot do this, as both PCI slots will be full with NICs.

Could I also get the HOT PLUG LFF Backplane, connect it to the B120i with a Mini SAS cable, and just run SATA drives off it?

If someone can help that would be GREAT!

Seems strange that HP can say the Gen8 drives work on this, but there are no G8 drive LED contacts on the Non hot plug backplane as shown in my link above.

I really need this, as I have to boot from SD Card, and then use two other SATA drives in the bays for vmware vSAN experimentation.

Question

I have a server that I can hopefully move the drives from it to another server.

Current server:

HP DL360p Gen8

SA P420i Controller

New Server

HP DL380e Gen8

SA P830 Controller

Could I move drives from the current server to the new server and keep the RAID intact?

Issues with DL380/360 G6 in either Ilo or hpacucli

Hi

I am experiencing some strange behaveour onto my DL380 and DL360. So I have a hp license for raid6 and I had build an array consisting of 8 HDD ( 7 are WD 7500 BPKT and 1 is WD 7500 BPKX ). The strange this is that in Ilo2 window my last 2 dives apear as "overheated" but if I do "ctrl slot=0 physicaldrive all show detail"

this is what I get

...

physicaldrive 2I:1:7
Port: 2I
Box: 1
Bay: 7
Status: OK
Drive Type: Data Drive
Interface Type: SATA
Size: 750 GB
Native Block Size: 4096
Rotational Speed: 7200
Firmware Revision: 01.01A01
Serial Number: WD-WXJ1E23HHDJ4
Model: ATA WDC WD7500BPKT-7
SATA NCQ Capable: True
SATA NCQ Enabled: True
Current Temperature (C): 21
Maximum Temperature (C): 35
PHY Count: 1
PHY Transfer Rate: 3.0Gbps

physicaldrive 2I:1:8
Port: 2I
Box: 1
Bay: 8
Status: OK
Drive Type: Data Drive
Interface Type: SATA
Size: 750 GB
Native Block Size: 4096
Rotational Speed: 7200
Firmware Revision: 01.01A01
Serial Number: WD-WX71EB3EH460
Model: ATA WDC WD7500BPKX-7
SATA NCQ Capable: True
SATA NCQ Enabled: True
Current Temperature (C): 19
Maximum Temperature (C): 35
PHY Count: 1
PHY Transfer Rate: 3.0Gbps

...

so as you can see the actual temps are 21 and 19deg which I don't think can be cathegorized as overtemp as Ilo2 shows them. I had tested the exact same hdds onto the DL360 and DL380 G6 servers and I can seem to be able to reporduce the issue every since time.

Is this some weird issue or is it solvable in any way? I did test the same servers with an array consisting of 5 WD 7500 BPKT and they seem to be ok as well as an array of 8 WD 7500 BPKX hdds and I have no issue with it.

Does anyone have any thoughts regarding this?

Hi Everybody We have a hp Proliant dl380 G7 with a RAID 5 array resides on 8-146GB hard disks. I've installed ESXI5 U1 on this array. Now according to our company grows we need more disk space but we cant add extra enclosure. So our company bought 6-1TB brand new disks. Is there any way for us to move this Raid 5 array from 8 - 146GB disks to 6 - iTB brand new disks? Thanks in advance. Mehdi

Hello,

I am trying to install ESXi 5.5 on to a DL360 G6 but I am having an issue where the ESXi install is not recognising the network card (onboard).

The ESXi installation starts but part way through stops with the message "No Network Adapters", I have tried plugging in a network cable and different HP ESXi images but with no luck.

The images I have tried so far are :-

HP NIC Teaming Failure

Hello All,

We are having HP Proliant 350 G6 servers, and teaming is configured on those server with 2 NIC's. HP network configuration utility is installed on the server to do the same. But issue is, teaming fails for some time and re-established the same in few minutes and this behaviour is on lot of servers. We are trying to find resolution on this issue but no success. Break teaming and re-created but no luck. Now we are trying to set threshold for this event so that we would not get tickets for this issue. Does anyone has faced this issue and have resolution on it. Please let me know on this. Waiting for positive response. For monitoring we are using SCOM 2012.

If anyone is having solution on server end(what configuration to be done) or SCOM side..Please let me know.

Below are the eventlogs.

DL385 SmartArray 6i add disks to RAID5 steps

$

I will be adding 2 disks (146 GB SCSI) to the current 4 disk array to fill the slots at Thanksgiving, and would like to know the correct sequence of activities.  From what I have read, I should do the following:

1. Power down and insert disks (I will also be installing 32GB RAM at this time with extra cooling fans)

2. Power up and run ACU (following items from HP Array Configuration Utility Users Guide)

3. Select the Smart Array

4. Click Controller Settings

4. Choose the option to Expand Array (which should show up because of the new drives in the slots)

5. Choose the Array and Drives and Finish

6. (I DO NOT choose to create new logical drives, because I want to extend the existing drive of the array - is this correct?)

7. Choose SAVE and wait until this finishes before extending the drive.

8. Follow Extend Logical Drive in the same User's Guide above (or do I use Windows Computer Management - Disk Management to do this??)

Windows Server 2008 OS on this Server.

9. Choose the only logical drive on the Array (my boot drive) for extending

10. Set the new size (will it show the available size or do I have to calculate this? if so, what would it be for six 146 GB drives in a RAID5 array?)

11. Choose Finish and Save, then wait.

When these steps are done, am I done? From my reading I believe so.

Any pointers from anyone?  Also, everyone says backup before you do this - is there a best practice for this and using what?  I am new to all this - the hardware person no longer works here, yet I have to pull all this together and get it working while production is down on Thanksgiving - the system is for SQL Server.

Thank you everyone!

ProLiant ML350 G6 Server doesn't boot, No any LED lights

$

Hi all!

We have been using this HP ProLiant ML350 G6 for several years (long before I moved into this company) it has always been working just nicely.

But yesterday, I attempted to power it on (nowadays we are used into switching it off since we're migrating from the software that runs on it) but to my suprise, it didn't come up. No any responses from it:

  1. When I connect the power cable, NO ANY LED light gets on (neither in the rear or front lights)
  2. Pressing the power button does NOT bring any LED lights on.
  3. When I plug the power cable to the power supply (at the back) I can hear some "tikting" sound inside it.
  4. I took the power supply out (you know you can plug it out and insert it back), plugged in the power cable and I hear some "tikting.."  sound from inside the power supply. I will hear the same if I leave the power cord plugged in and switched  power off and then ON in the power/electricity wall outlet.
  5. I tried to use other power cords (to figure out whether the current one is damaged) but no success.
  6. (The server uses KVM switch to connect to a monitor/display unit), so I decided to connect it to the monitor directly, no success --thought I think there was no point in trying this since there is no even a single LED light ON.
  7. Server has always been running on APC UPS power, I tried connecting it to different other power outlets, no succes.

So this is my problem, I get NO ANY LED light ON.

What could be the problem and how can I solve this please?

Thanks in advance for any inputs,

Frank.

Remove Physical Drive from Array

I have a HP Proliant DL 380. I have created an array that contains 3 physical drives. I need to remove one of the drives from the array without losing the data. I have tried using the ACU but there's not an option there to do such a thing without losing the data.

ProLiant ML150 G2 – Windows 2003 standard
Raid Controller adaptec 2610sa with 4 160gb drives in raid 5 config
HP Storage Manager Agent reported a failed drive. I checked the server and saw a constant amber light on the drive. (the first one in the array at the bottom). Then the server shut down. I pulled the drive and replaced it with a 250gb one (new). Restarted the server. During the start up no raid was found, it then said that the bios was not installed and went into a network boot.
I shut down the server, put the old drive back in (I had put the suspect drive into another HP server and it seemed to work fine)
I again restarted the server. This time the raid was found but it came up on the screen “drive is missing or degraded”. The restart got and far as “windows is starting “. It then came up with an error
“Lsass.exe – system error security accounts manager initialization failed because of the following: directory services cannot start. Error status 0x00002e1. Please click OK to shut down this system and reboot into directory services restore mode, check the event log for more detailed information”
Another normal restart – the above error still came up but there was another window in the background saying “active directory is rebuilding indices” but seemed to stay on this
Another restart but this time into directory services restore mode. The server is now running in this mode. The light on the suspect drive is now a constant green, the other drives are flashing green.
The HP storage manager shows the RAID controller and it says all drives in the array are ‘optimal’. But is says that the logical drive is degraded.
While in this restore mode I thought I would hot swap the suspect drive and allow the raid to rebuild. As soon as I pulled the first drive in the array the server went into a blue screen and shut down. Again put the suspect drive back in and again the server is running in directory services mode.
Why can’t I just swap the first drive in the array? Is active directory broken?

Any help would be great?

OWBI and UI can not be accessed.

Is there any way to solve this problem? Maybe try to upgrade the firmware, but without using UI/OWBI?

Hi All,

I have a Proliant ML350p G8 and I need to get new hard drives, the part number of current hard drives is 689287-004, this HP LIST says it belongs to MSA storage system and that the spare part is 730703-001, but I do not have MSA as far as I know, it is a server, I am totally lost on which spare part number I need to buy. I attach disk photos, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance
