Proliant ML330 G6 VMWare ESXi doesn't understand RAID, Windows Server 2012 Datacenter can't install

$

I have Proliant ML330 G6 with two 1TB Seagate Baracuda drives. I created RAID1+0 logical disk(the only other option was RAID0). Here's what happened during ESXi and Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Server Core only installations:

ESXi 5.5.0 - Instead of RAID it was my two drives as plain SATA. So I could pick one or the other to install ESXi on. Installation was a success but my gripe with ESXi is that it didn't see a single logical RAID disk with size of 1TB.

Windows Server 2012 -  Didn't see RAID too. Downloaded HP Smart Array B110i SATA RAID Controller from here:

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=3958194&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4138

Applied the drivers during installation. A single RAID drive showed up but Windows said it couldn't install itself on it. And told me to check if my RAID is enabled.

So, my question is why neither of them worked properly with RAID. Is Proliant's hardware/software not suported by these hypervisors or can you actually make it work somehow(how?)?

Gen8 Drive carriers

So,

We have quite a few drives with carriers that have seen better days. (Sigh...)

Where can I get genuine HP replacement carriers, 3.5" LFF ones?

I tried a couple off ebay, and they were utter utter rubbish Chinese copies. Never again.

Surely HP must supply these as spare parts for those who have bits that are worse for wear?

Ive got an HP P/N of

651314-001

But cannot find the "real" ones for love nor money. CheersHP!

Thanks

How to disable Automatic RAID on DL380 g5

$

We are a non profit org.

We had several servers donated to us. (Actually we have over 600 compouters in stock - www.HawaiianHope.org)

One of them, the fastest and newest, is a Proliant DL380 g5. Nice hardware, Dual CPU with Quad core each, 20 gig of ram.

We have 3 drives in it and are trying to install FreeNAS.

Actually FreNas is running successfully, except that every time the server restarts, it decides that it knows better than the human running it, and it automatically rebuilds the RAID array.

I have tried every options in the menus, have manually removed the raid settings about 12 times now, booted with the SmartStart CD and removed the raid settings there.. but no matter what I do, every time it restarts it pops up with 3 menu options at boot, and the "default" setting is to automatically rebuild the raid. If it restarts i have to be standing there in front of it to press the escape key when the short menu pops up.  Then when i tell it no raid, now it does not see any drives at all. teh nly time it sees drives is when it automatically builds teh hardware raid

How do i tell it once and for all to disable the hardware raid ? Stop and dont freggin do it again, ever. I hate this type of "automation" that makes it more difficult to accomplish what the end user actually wants to do.

HP Microserver G8 loosing RAID0 array after shutdown

Hi,

I purchases two G8's recently to run Ceph Storage. My config is:

1x SSD for OS (I added this drive instead of DVD)

4x HDDs for data (not in RAID)

The problem is that I am not able to boot from the additional SSD unless I create RAID0 on this drive. But when I do, the array is lost after shutting the system down. This has happened twice already.

To recover, I just create a RAID0 array again on the SSD and the system boots. But this is getting quite anonying.

Any thoughs?

BTW, the best would be if I am able to boot from the SSD without creating RAID, but not sure if this is possible.

Thanks Jiri

ILO4 Fault on DL380 G8 Server

Hi,

Recently, while working with ILO4 on our operational DL 380 G8 server during a maintenance period, the server was suddenly rebooted and an ILO-related error was displayed on the screen, which pointed us to the diagnostics ILO page.

The fault seemed like a serious one, because the boot process had been stopped at that point. The diagnostics ILO page said this error: "Controller firmware revision 2.09.00 Could not partition embedded media device ". We cound not find a similar situation by google search. Anyway, after struggling with serveral reboots/poweroffs, the problem was resolved by pressing reset diagnostic button.

What's this error is all about? Can it be repeated in the futuer again? What should we do to prevent this from occuring again?

Thanks.

iLO4 on Dl380p Gen8 - Connection issues over VPN

Hi,

We have a brand new DL380p Gen8 with iLO4.

I configured iLO to use a static address (192.168.100.31/24) and I connected it to the local network.

If I try to ping/open web page/start console from the LAN everything is fine, and a continuous ping doesn't show lost packets.

However, if I try to connect through VPN (from 192.168.2.15/24) I experience a very strange behaviour: my server seems "dead" for long periods of time (from 15 to 30 minutes): no ping, no web access.

Then, suddenly, it starts responding for 2 to 5 minutes and then it dies again, with average ping times of 50ms.

During blackouts, I can connect via remote desktop to the server itself, using the IP assigned to the "normal" NICs.

Of course I tested my VPN connection: during blackouts every other client on the LAN is reachable from my remote pc: I can ping them and I can access services such as remote desktop, web pages, etc.

I had a look at my firewall logs (btw it's a Watchguard Firebox XTM525) but I couldn't find anything relevant.

iLO firmware version is 2.02 Sep 05 2014.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

P420 Smart Array compatibility with 4TB SATA drives

$

Steve had a question about drive support on the HP Smart Array controllers:

************

One of my customers has some DL380e servers with P420 1GB controllers. They currently have 3TB SATA drives installed but want to expand to 4TB drives. P420 is running F/w 5.42.

I did some research on compatibility and while the DL380e & P420 quickspecs both say the 4TB SATA is supported, there is a note in the SATA drive specs saying –

NOTE: To support HP hard drives exceeding 2.2TB, HP Smart Array Firmware version 5.0 or later is required for the following controllers:

    HP Smart Array P212 Controller

    HP Smart Array P410 Controller

    HP Smart Array P411 Controller

    HP Smart Array P711m Controller

    HP Smart Array P812 Controller

To use hard drives exceeding 2.2TB, you must create a boot volume using offline ACU version 8.75 or later. HP Smart Array controllers do not support boot volumes exceeding 2.2TB. Other controllers are not supported.

Does this mean that the P420 doesn’t support 4TB drives or is this just badly worded? The drive in question is 693687-B21.

And will the P420 support 11 physical drives (1 x 500GB, 6 x 3TB, 4 x 4TB, all SATA LFF)  each drive as a single RAID 0 LUN ( 11 LUNs )?

Hello,

I have server HP ML350 G6 with 1 CPU E5540. I'd like to add second processor.

Server have 3 fans (2 back and 1 front).

After install 2nd E5540 with heat sink 508876-001 and RAM similar like for first processor server doesn't start. Only fans work with full speed, no leds flash on the system board.

Processor and RAM are good, because I install them in first slots, and work well.

Do you have any idea what can I do to make good start?

Thanks for help.

P212 Controller Card confussion

$

We purchased an HP 462834-B21 (SA P212/256 - no battery) and per HP, the controller is suppose to support 3GBs SATA. I have 4 Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SSDs connected to the controller via SFF SAS/SATA Drive CAGE 16 backplane ( DL170h server).  Have enabled the cache battery ignore (ack on the dangers of doing so)... But the SSA is showing the Transfer Speed as 1.5 GBs? Additional IOMeter testings validates that the xfer speed is only at 1.5 Gbps and not 3 Gbps.

Did a lot of research and I see the P212 with a 1.5 GBs SATA  and a 3 GBs SATA listing. Is there some specific need for this controller to opperate at 3 GBs SATA? or perhaps there are 2 different P212 ?  I usually don't like quering the experts until I have done my due diliganece but having done so, not sure what I am missing...  Before I go back that the controller is the problem, hopeing someone here can shed some light.

HP Proliant DL380 G5 or maybe G4 ???

Hi everybody!

I have an old server that I need to buy some spareparts for, so I took the Product ID and looked it up on http://partsurfer.hp.com/ to see the details on my server. To my supprise it showed me that what I had was a HP PROLIANT DL380 G4 SPECIAL RACK SERVER eventhough the server is bourght as a DL380 G5 server, it says that in the Ilo on the front of the server it self and on the dokumentation that I have.

The problem is that the person that I have spoken with regarding the spareparts says that this is clearly a G4 server??? Anybody that has come across this situation before ?

Thanks upfront for any imput!

Virtual Switches suddenly stop functioning

$

Several months ago we got a call from a client with a standalone 2012 R2 HyperV host: Absolutely NO network traffic was going through any of the virtual switches, yet we could see no errors or warnings of any kind in any of the logs.  Desperate to get them back up and running we simply deleted all the virtual switches, recreated them (identical to what they were) and reattached all the VMs.  Note that the port reserved for the host had no issue.  At first we chalked it up as a fluke....except that it happened again to a completely different customer.  And then third.   And then a forth.   And then several months after the first incident it happened againt to the first customer.   It has become a chronic issue which happens ever few months and no trigger can be found.

The only thing common to all of them is A) Server 2012 R2 host and B) HP ProLiant G8 servers (various models, inluding DL360, ML350, and ML310).

All hardware has the latest firmware and drivers as prescribed by HP.  All Windows updates are applied in timely fashion.  No event, change, or tampering precipitates the event.  The virtual switches just stop passing data.

I've reached out to the Microsoft community on technet but no one there has seen this behavior before.   I hope someone here can shed some light on it.

DL380 G7 Smart Update Manager Issue - Failed Dependency for component: cp020069.exe

I manage a DL380 G7 running Win Server 2008 R2 (64-bit) and when runing the HP SUM, once I get to the "Review and Install Updates" page,  I get the following error message due to a failed dependency:

Installation for "HP ProLiant System Providers for 64-bit Microsoft Windows Server Editions" requires one or more of the following that is not currently installed or in the install set: - HP ProLiant DL980 G7

Prior to this message I had checked for latest updates from ftp.hp.com which was successful. Since my server is a DL380 G7 and not a DL980 G7, it doesn't make sense.

Any recommendations?

temperature sensor thresholds

Hi all,

we have been monitoring the progress of temperature sensors in 20 DL380 G8 servers. Sensor 25 (25-HD Controller) has caught our attention, because we see its value span among servers from 55C to 90C. Even though iLO has not been complaining most of our Net-SNMP agents have raised an alarm.

We are thinkning about adjust the SNMP alarm threshold value. Is there a recomendation for what they should be?
Shall we use the threshold values given by hplog?
Is there a way to force fans to operate at a higher speed?

RAID 5 rebuild

Hello,

Recently on my ProLiant DL380 G7, 2 HDDs failed. I got the replacement HDD and would like to know how can I rebuild RAID 5 after hotplugging these 2 HDDs. Is there any data loss involved? OR is there a server downtime required to carry out this activity?

Thank you for your help.
