How to disable HP SmartCache on DL380 G8

$

I’m working with a company who recently purchased servers with the following (relevant) specs:

-HP DL380 G8

-HP Smart Array P420 + 10 7.2K SAS disks configured in individual RAID 0 arrays

-HP Smart Array P822 + 12 7.2K SAS disks configured in individual RAID 0 arrays

-HP 2GB FBWC FOR P-SERIES SMART ARRAY

-Physical Write Cache is disabled for the Smart Arrays. Logical Cache is set to 25% read 75% write.

We are trying to validate that the storage meets our designed IO targets within acceptable latencies. Read latencies are fine, but we’re seeing massive write latencies (sometimes over a full second). I found the Whitepaper below, which suggests this can happen if the FBWC is used in conjunction with HP SmartCache (see pages 9-11).

http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c03641668-3&docLocale=

We’re trying to determine how to disable SmartCache, but can’t find any guidance. When we look in the HP Smart Storage Administrator, SmartCache shows as unlicensed, and won’t let us configure, or even view any options for it. How do we confirm that this is disabled or not, and disable it if it isn’t? Can the HPACUCLI do this?

Thanks.

DL360P Gen9 Heating Issue

We recently received 2 DL360P Gen9 servers. The issue is that CPU2 is running way too hot, both are having the same issue. ILO says all is well. You are unable to lay your hand on the cover due to the heat it creates. Last time this happened turned out to be bad cpus, on a G6. Just wondering if anyone out there has come across this issue?

I am checking the only other 3 Gen9's we have running to see if they are running this hot, we only have 5 so far.

Any ideas??

Thanks

Javier

Proliant DL360 gen8 accepts no keyboard input

Hello,

One of our servers ran into trouble recently, it started freezing during reboot.

Now, the server recognizes no input from the USB ports, I cannot use a keyboard. Things I tried:

1) All USB ports, looking for the numlock light on the keyboard.

2) Resetting the BIOS via switch 6. I rebooted with the switch toggled, got the message then changed it back.

3) I've tried using the Remote Console through ILO 4 (updated to 2.03).

4) I've tried using the standalone remote console.

...whatever I try, it accepts no keystrokes (F9, F10, F11 etc)..not even through the Remote console(s).

I suspect USB may have been turned off in the BIOS...but I cannot access the BIOS without pressing F9.

Can someone please give me some advice on how to debug this?

Thanks in advance

ML150 G6 - Parts to add a second CPU

Hello,

I have an HP ProLiant ML150 G6 server with a single Xeon E5506 CPU.

Do I need any parts other than the heatsink and CPU to add a second CPU to this server?

Thanks!

HP Proliant ML350 G5 Harddrive problem

Hi,

I have a ML350 G5 with an array of 4x 146GB SAS drives coonected to an E200i controller. This server is running Small Business Server 2008 like a file server and ERP software for the company. Not a big network, only 12 users.

A couple of weeks ago some users complained the speed of the network. I went to the server and find out that one of the hard drives were showing the red light, and the HP ACU confirmed that, HDD 3 was dead. But after I rebooted the server  (shutdown, power on again) it seems that the HDD came back to life, green light again. Back to the ACU and there was a message alert: (Ready for Recovery) Logical drive 1 (410.1 GB, RAID 5) is queued for rebuilding. I waited for two days but the message stayed the same.

I rebooted the server again, and in the POST screen the message:

Select "F1" to retry Automatic Data Recovery
Select "F2" to continued without starting Automatic Data Recovery

I pressed F1, but after OS boot the ACU still reports Ready for Recovery.

Since then the nightly server backup get stucked on Running consistency check for application Exchange. Said that I didn't have full system any backups, which frightened me. Since I have a NAS on the network I started to copy every shared folder to the NAS.

I stopped the Exchange Information Store and tried to copy the .edb file which gave me an error. In the Event Viewer I found a HP entry saying that there was a problem with hard drive 0. I found this strange since the drive that was failing wase drive 3.

Yesterday after rebootinh the server once again I had the event's on Event Viewer:

Due to an unrecoverable read error, the recovery of logical drive 1 configured on array controller E200i [Embedded] was aborted while rebuilding a physical drive.

The physical drive which was being rebuilt is located in bay 3 of box 1 which is connected to port 1I of array controller E200i [Embedded] .

The physical drive that reported the read error is located in bay 2 of box 1 which is connected to port 1I of array controller E200i [Embedded].

The server is up and running, but the messages say's that almost every drive has problems.

I orded a new drive, but now I'm unsure which one should I change, and I don't know if I can hot swap with the Ready for Recovery message without fatal stopping the system.

I need some word of advice.

Regards,
Edgar Santos

DL380 G3 cpqcissm Timeout Errors with SmartArray 5i

$

We started getting Event 9 cpqcissm timeout errors yesterday and have occurred more frequently today:

The device \Device\Scsi\cpqcissm1 did not respond within the timeout period

It occurs more than once at a time separated by 10 to 30 seconds. During this time the computer is nonresponsive both over the network and at local UI. Problem since it's our backend database.

When this error last occurred on 10/5/05 it occurred once then the system marked the drive as failed and we replaced it (RAID 5).

I've run the HP Array Diagnostic Utility, and looked at the other configuration/utility tools and they do not report any problems or degraded items.

I compared the number of disk errors and hours in service on this server to our other DL 380's and it has a MUCH higher rate of errors.

Another server has drives with twice the hours with only 1 error recorded across 6 drives.

3 of the 6 drives in the problem system with 11,100 hours have Failure Indicators - Not Ready Errors in the 60's and in the Problem Indicators one or more SCSI Bus Faults and/or Other Timeouts. They have read about 71 billion sectors and written 3 billion.

1 drive with 11,100 hours has only 10 Not Ready Errors but with 2 Other Timeouts and 1 SCSI Bus Fault

Another drive with 11,100 hours has NO ERRORS on it. And the drive replaced on 10/5/05 has 960 hours on it with no errors.

Anyone have any ideas what the root problem may be? Am I looking at the possibility of more than one hard drive failing at once? Do I have 3 bum drives and could/should I get them replaced? Thanks

DL 380p Gen8 - ESXi Hardware status alarms?

$
0
0

I have 3 new DL380p Gen8 which I updated to latest firmware using SPP and installed ESXi 5.5 (HP image)

I have now joined the servers to  an existing virtual center install as a new 3 node cluster.

All three alarm for the the same 5 hardware temerature sensors in Vitual center

- LOM CARD

- PCI 1

- PCI 2

- HD Controller

-System Management Module - iLO Zone

Connecting to the iLO web consoles for the 3 servers I can initally not find these sensors as part of the "Sensor Data" under "System Information" > "Temperatures" . If I then check to "Show missing Sensors" the following are show as Not Installed.

12-HD Max System 5 0 Not installed N/A N/A

27-LOM Card I/O Board 14 14 Not installed N/A N/A
28-PCI 1 I/O Board 13 13 Not installed N/A N/A
29-PCI 2 I/O Board 13 13 Not installed N/A N/A
30-PCI 3 I/O Board 13 13 Not installed N/A N/A
31-PCI 4 I/O Board 7 13 Not installed N/A N/A
32-PCI 5 I/O Board 7 13 Not installed N/A N/A
33-PCI 6 I/O Board 7 13 Not installed N/A N/A

Can anyone explain what is going on here?  Why is Virtual Center alarming for sensors that are not installed?

Should they be installed? Are they phyically missing from the server or just missing drivers?

Is this a Vmware Virtual Center problem or a hardware issue with the 3 servers?

Initally the iLO firmware was on 2.02 but I have upgraded to 2.03 and the problem is still there.

If I reset the sensor data in virtual center the problem initally disappears but the alarms re-occur on the next refresh of the sensor data?

Proliant Service Support Pack - and warranty

$

I've just been trying to download a firmware update on one of our servers, primarily to fix a bug but also as a standard periodic update. Just found out that I need an extended warranty to download a firmware image, which is to fix a faulty piece of code!

So, I now need to pay, every year if I want to secure my system against potentially serious errors. Errors caused by HP themselves!!! This is incredible, and a huge push to recommend Cisco UCS as the system of choice for all servers (Cisco require an account to download UCS firmware but not an extended warranty agreement).

Way to go to stab your customers in the back HP...

We are using SL2500's for Hadoop. Does anybody have a best guess on what type of performance increase we would see by moveing to Haswell? I am also wondering when Haswell will be available on the SL2500, or if there will be a new gen9 2U server announced soon.

Microserver NL40 mini SAS problem

Hi,

I have Microserver NL40 running the RaidXpert software, the drives are connected to the only internal mini SAS port.  I wnat to connect an internal HP DAT SAS drive but dont have a spare mini SAS port.  I am looking to install a PCIe card that has internal mini SAS port but they are all RAID controller cards.  Can i use one of these just to detect the DAT drive or will i have to use the RAID as well?  i want to keep the RAID as it is with the Raid Xpert.  What other options do i have to install another mini SAS port?

Thanks

ml350 g5 e200i 2tb hard drive configeration

Hi, i have aquired a ml350 g5 server with a e200i raid intergrated and 2 x 250gb hard drives in raid 1 with windows server 2008 installed. my question is while i understand the e200i will accept 2tb hard drives can i add 4 x 2tb drives in raid 0 (4 logical drives) or in raid 1 (2 logical drives mirrored)? my preferance would be to get 8tb of drive capacity over 4 logical drives in total after the operating system as i have a backup solution already.
