SAS Expander card issues

Hi, we are trying to install a SAS expander card on a DL380 G7 and having some issues.

Firstly the assumption is the card is connected to both the internal P410 controller (recent firmware and 256MB cache) and then the 2nd drive cage and then this will allow us to see the extra disks in the P410 controller in the ADU ?

Should I be able to see the SAS card in device manager or in the HP management homepage or the ACU or ADU ? I want to know how i can verify it is connected correctly and is functioning ?

Are there any tips or gotchas anyone has experienced ?

Many thanks in advance!! :)

Cannot Enable Write Cache on Smart Array 6400

Hi, I manage a HP ProLiant DL380 G4 server connected to a MSA20 array trough an internal Smart Array 6400 controller.

Since some time, I have a problem with write speeds, which have gone terribly down.

When doing simple tests like "dd if=/dev/zero of=./testfile" I noticed that writing starts fast, but starts crawling as soon as the amount of data written reaches 800-900 MB, and then I get terrible transfer speeds between 5 and 20 MB/s.

The write cache batteries were old and needed replacement, so they have been replaced now - all four of them, two in the server and two in the array. But the problem remains.

I used ACU CLI and discovered that the cache on the 6400 controller is not enabled. Maybe it needs to be enabled again, after replacing batteries?

Anyway, I cannot find a way to enable it: the command returns an error telling that this operation is not possible with this configuration.

Instead I successfully enabled the cache on the MSA20, but it wasn't enough to fix the problem.

How can I enable the cache in the 6400? What am I missing?

The cache module should be present and correctly inserted, because all other status outputs are fine.

Any clues?

Thanks.

Marco

Problem with configure cache (Cache Status: Not Configured)

i have two near identical machines ProLiant DL360 G7 with P410i.

One works ok, second has major problems with performance. What they differ is cache, on first:

=> ctrl all show status
Smart Array P410i in Slot 0 (Embedded)   Controller Status: OK   Cache Status: OK

On second:

=> ctrl all show status
Smart Array P410i in Slot 0 (Embedded)   Controller Status: OK   Cache Status: Not Configured

On second - show config detail show:

Cache Board Present: True

Cache Status: Not Configured

Accelerator Ratio: 100% Read / 0% Write

Read Cache Size: 0 MB

Write Cache Size: 0 MB

Drive Write Cache: Disabled

Total Cache Size: 144 MB

No-Battery Write Cache: Disabled

I tried to find any way to "configure" cache - but it failed. I can enable drivewritecache, but - it doesn't "configure" cache.

Have you any suggestions what do with it?

I have a Proliant DL380 G2, and one of the Hard drives just fail. Can i change a 36.4 Gb 10K Ultra3 Scsi with a 36.4 15K U320 Scsi?

Or do i have to keep the same size, speed and interface?

This is a PIII 1.4 Mhz 1.5M Ram hot swap with Windows 2000 SP4 Raid 5

Thanks!

Moving array from P212 to B110i (DL160 G7)

I'm not sure this can be done, but I'd love it if it could.

I have a DL160 G7 that currently has a P212 controller installed, and 2 x 500GB drives in a RAID1 array with Windows installed. I want to move the P212 to another server (long story, to do with DPM, SCOM and fibre HBAs) and just use the onboard B110i on the DL160.

Just plugging the drives into the B110i gives me no joy, as the B110i can't see the RAID array created by the P212.

Breaking the P212 mirror in ACU just gives me two separate RAID arrays that still can't be seen by the B110i.

Leaving the B110i in SATA mode in BIOS lets me boot into Windows but then I have no RAID protection.

So: is there any way of getting the B110i to understand the P212 config, or stripping the RAID layer off the hard disks completely and re-mirroring the drive in the B110i ACU? Any way of moving the array/setting it up again that doesn't involve wiping the disks and reinstalling Windows from scratch?

Alternatively, and I'd rather not do this - if I spent the £300 on a P410 internal controller, could that understand the P212 array and allow it to be done?

HP ProLiant DL380 G7 Server erase disk

I've received a new HP ProLiant DL380 G7 Server series with 2 HDD. During installation of  Linux Enterprise 5.5 from DVD, only 1 HD disk (300G) was seen.

After installation,  I could only not see 1 disk from root desktop.

I removed the first disk (with Linux), and saw the 2nd disk is seen (with HP smartstart dvd and Linux Iso dvd), meaning it's not an hardaware failure.

I replugged the 2 disks, but then sytem does not boot.

Now the system boot only when the 2nd disk is removed.

What can I do?

Thanks

Upgrade ILO in DL360 G5

I bought some of these cheap to mess around with in my home lab, and for the most part really good for my purposes.  I do have a bit of an issue though in how old the firmware is, but I can't find anything past 2.09 after some extensive shipping.

Is there a firmware upgrade past 2.09 for this system?

Second question, is it possible to upgrade the ILO 2 module to an ILO 3 or 4 module in this system?

ProLiant ML310e Gen 8 Windows Server 2008 Install Issues

Hello, recently i was setting one of these up and ran into an issue when installing Windows Server 2008 and couldn't continue. What happened is durring the installation I where I had to pick a HDD to install windows it wouldn't let me pick. The error was somehting like "Windows can not be installed onto this partition." I figured it was  a botched drive then tried a few other HDD's (2x 2TB and 2x 1TB) which also did not work.

I tried to rectify it by opening the Console and setting write to true via the command prompt however that was unsucessful and did not work giving me an error stating it could not be changed.

Any Advice or Tips would be widely appreciated, It could be something I missed in the setup however I feel that I configured the Server Bios Correctly.

DL180 G9 Fan Noise with inserted PCIe Card

$

Hello,

I have big troubles with the fans turning at 70%.

The server is a DL180 Serial Number CZ3519XELF (and i have eleven more of them)

OS: CentOS 6.5

Inserted Cards:

PCI-E Slot 1 - TERMA Voice Announcer Card

PCI-E Slot 2 - HP Smart Array P440 Controller

PCI-E Slot 3 - HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331T Adapter

PCI-E Slot 5 - Moxa RS 232 Card CP-102E

PCI-E Slot 6 - DeLock Parallel Port Card 89219

When i run the Server without any inserted PCIe Card (except the P440 ) the fans are silent after the start of the OS and running at 10%

When i insert the 1Gb 4-port 331T Adapter the fans are turning at 70% load. So i did a SPP Uprade (Version spp_2015.06.0) so i now System ROM U20 v1.40 (05/06/2015) iLO Firmware Version  2.20 May 20 2015. Since that the fans are also silent (10%) with this card inserted.

After inserting one of the other cards or all off them the fans are turning at 70% and they are making a lot of noise.

None of the cards needs a lot of power and i have the same configuration running in two DL360e G8 without that problem.

What should i do to make the fans running at 10%

Thanks, Best regards

Martin

Performing inline upgrade of Windows Server 2008 R2 into 2012 R2 effects on LUNs ?

People,

I'm about to perform OS upgrade of my current backup up server from Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 into Windows Server 2012 R2 while minimizing the OS reconfiguration and its running application.

I have some NTFS LUNs presented by HP EVA 6300 storage array that is used as multiple drive letters to contains the multiple server backup repository ~ 10TB for each drives (4 of them).

As above screenshot

So do I need to disconnect the SCSI cable behind the HBA during the upgrade or shall I just perform the OS upgrade as it is now without worrying too much about the SCSI HBA driver ?

As part of our automated ESX 5.5 build we run HPONCFG 4.4 with an XML to configure AD Integration on ilo4. This has previously worked fine with firmware 1.51.

The Latest DL380 Gen8's have been delivered with Firmware 2.05 and the XML script now fails at

Any ideas?

HP Proliant ML110 G7 VT-x enabled in BIOS but not working

Hi

I have a HP Proliant ML110 G7 with a Intel E3-1230 Processor.

I already enabled VT-x and VT-d in the BIOS but Windows kept showing that VT-x is not enabled.

The weird part is the Processor Identification kept showing E31230 instead of E3-1230

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Proliant ML310e CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED drive locked

Hi, I am setting up a Proliant ML310e server with Windows 2012 R2. All went fine for a few weeks until yesterday morning when it started up and went to repair mode.

When I refresh my PC I get the message "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again."

I don't know where to find this unlock option but I think it has something to do with the RAID configuration... (RAID 1, 1TB) When I try Startup Repair it doesn't give me anything, not even a log file.

Rests me no other option than to shutdown... THE END!

Can someone explain what is going on?

Thanks in Advance,

Johan

PS. If it is the RAID controller, can I switch that off and run on one of the 2 disks?

DL360 Gen9 Shared iLO Port?

I have two DL360 Gen9 with a 4-port LOM, a 4-port FlexLOM and one iLO port.

Is it possible to have the iLO port shared between iLO and Windows?

I know I can share the LOM and FlexLOM, but I want to have them dedicated to the data network and put the iLO port on an untagged switch port for iLO and Windows-management.

DL180 G6 ILO 100 and Java 8

Hi, do you anybody know if ILO 100 is compatible with Java 8?, I have a DL180 G6 and the ILO KVM console doesn't show the server screen, all the KVM options appear in the window but the screen appear in gray.

I've made some tests with a machine with Java 7 patch 21 and the screen appear fine, I've upgrated the ILO firmware to the version 4.26 but I don't see any change with Java 8, I've looking for a compatiblity document for Java version but I don't find any document yet.

Can you help to clarify if ILO 100 is compatible with Java 8?

Best Regards
