New harddrive for ML370G5T

$

In 2008 we bought a ML370G5T with 8 harddrive 146Gb 3G sas 10k single port. In that occasion (2008) we bought also a ML370 G5 SAS SFF 8-bay Drive Cage Kit with its HP Smart Array P400/512MB BBWC Controller but without any hard drive for these. Now we need to fill the kit with 8 harddrives. Obviously the 146gb single port hard drive doesn't exist on my vendor. I find only dual port sas 6Gb 15K. Can I use these ?

Thanks

Multiple HP DL380G4 and a MSA20

Hi folks. First post so please be kind.
I have just brought 3 x HP Proliant DL380G4 servers and a MSA20 Disk Array.
The units are still in transit so I cannot check the finer details however.

I intend to use these to make up a small virtual server environment. I understand that I will need to use Ultra320 to connect these together but I cannot find much information on connecting multiple hosts (the DL380's) to a MSA20.
The VM Environment with be VMWare ESX

Any advice greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance
Dave

dl80g6 / p800 drive bay order

hi,
consider the following offset:
dl380g6 with p800 and harddrives connected to the internal backplane. all components flashed up today.
hd leds are not functional in this offset (apart from a little lightshow on powering on the box). documented issue. so far so good.

the problem is that the bay numbering reported from controller bios, smartstart or drivers doesn't correspond to the numbering on the server's front, i.e. if the front numbering is

1 5
2 6
3 7
4 8

the bays reported by e.g. the controller bios will be

4 8
3 7
2 6
1 5

or even (if switching ports)

8 4
7 3
6 2
5 1

bad thing if you get a trap that hd in bay 2 has failed and you replace a functional one...

can't tell whether this is an historical issue or something introcuded by a backplane / controller / whatever firmware.
any hints?

SmartArray P212/256 and RAID5 with cciss driver: no space left on device

Hello there,

I'm installing HP DL180 G6 with 12-disk front bay.
Internals:
one Xeon E5520 CPU, 6GB RAM,
SmartArray P212 controller with 256MB cache. Disk cage is loaded with 2x 146GB SAS disks and 4x 2GB SATA disks.

Controller is running latest available firmware (3.66) and has two logical disks configured:
- RAID1 volume based on 146GB SAS disks, visible to underlaying linux system as /dev/cciss/c0d0
- RAID5 volume based on 2TB SATA disks, /dev/cciss/c0d1

hpacucli shows everything is fine, and I can see the real size of RAID devices:

# cat /proc/partitions
major minor #blocks name
104 0 143338560 cciss/c0d0
104 1 96358 cciss/c0d0p1
104 2 143235540 cciss/c0d0p2
104 16 5860445272 cciss/c0d1
104 17 5860444160 cciss/c0d1p1

(Partition 1, c0d1p1 was created with parted after initializing the GPT label)

However, my block write attempts fail.
I cannot write to the partition, it fails right away:

# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/c0d1p1 bs=1M count=10240
dd: writing `/dev/c0d1p1': No space left on device
1+0 records in
0+0 records out
4096 bytes (4.1 kB) copied, 0.000534731 s, 7.7 MB/s

If I would write to the disk itself, it would give me a headroom of 3.1GB:

# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/c0d1 bs=1M count=10240
dd: writing `/dev/c0d1': No space left on device
2978+0 records in
2977+0 records out
3122606080 bytes (3.1 GB) copied, 1.32505 s, 2.4 GB/s

Some technical information:
Debian Linux version 6.0 (squeeze)
Linux hostname 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Wed Jan 12 03:40:32 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux

dmesg does not show anything strange

# modinfo cciss | grep version:
version: 3.6.20
srcversion: 9DE0C3ECDF1A8C9C0467DBF

Ideas anyone?

Vlad

Parity Initialization Status

We have a smart array 5i in embedded slot running from a DL380 G2  to a disk sub system (Old I know) configured as a 450 GB raid 5 array the server went down over the weekend for some unknow reason and the controller disabled the logical drive due to errors, we dont have much hope for the data but started an Initialization on the logical drive as the array config utility can still see them in the hope we may be able to recover something, problem is the has now been running for about 72 hours. Does anyone know how long this could pottentially take?

Thanks

Background parity initialization is currently queued or in progress on Logical Drive 3 (RAID 5).

Dear all,

I have plugged into HP 380 G5 3 HDD, i also create a RAID 5 on 3 HDDs and a logical driver, I see in the status alerts :"Background parity initialization is currently queued or in progress on Logical Drive 3 (558.7 GB, RAID 5). If background parity initialization is queued, it will start when I/O is performed on the drive. When background parity initialization completes, the performance of the logical drive will improve."

I haven't initialized and formatted the drive in windows ( by Windows Disk Management )

Should i initialize and format the logical with Windows Disk Management ? Or i have to wait until the background parity initialization completes ? i have been waiting for the background parity initialization in 2 days .

All the suggestion will be appreciated.

Thanks so much

Multiple event 129s after installing new 146GB Hot-Plug hard drives - HP PROLIANT ML350 server

$

Hello,

We are running an HP PROLIANT ML350 server in a Windows SBS 2008 environment.  Recently, we replaced one of 3 Hot Swappable Drives that are part of a RAID 5 configuration with a Smart Array E200i Controller.     The drive rebuilt successfully and seems to be working.  However, since the replacement there are multiple instances of the following  error in the System Log:

Error 129

Source HPCISSs2

Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.

I have researched this and  found in the HP Knowledge base document c03097038 that describes that this sometimes happens after reinstalling one of the very drives we used (146GB SAS 10K rpm 6 Gb 2.5" SFF Dual-Port Hot-Plug Hard Drive model HP EG0146FARTR).  The document stated that this has been found in Windows Server2003 R2 environments, but did not mention Windows SBS 2008.  The fix was to upgrade the controller firmware to version 1.88.  Our current firmware is 1.78.

Does this reported issue also apply to Windows SBS 2008 environments?  If so, is there an ONLINE ROM FLASH version of this firmware version available?

Thanks in advance.

We have an HP DL 380 G6 storage server running windows storage server 2003 attached NAS MSA60 with the following settup.
6 drives in array B running RAID 0.
after a restart the logical drive is in failed state.
In Disk Management the drive cannot be initilized.

all physical drives are in ok state

but i got this error (see the attachment)

271 (Failed) Logical Drive 1 (5.5 TB, RAID 0) has failed and cannot be used. All data on this logical drive has been lost. Configuration changes to this logical drive are not allowed until this problem is corrected. Also, if your controller supports Expansion, Extension, or Migration, these operations will not be available for any logical drives in the array until the problem is corrected.

Replace any failed physical drives and re-enable the failed logical drive. For more information, generate a diagnostics report under the Diagnostics tab.

LSI SAS 3442X-R PCI-X controller in DL380 G3 with Server 2008 x86 hangs on boot

$

I have a DL380 G3 server with a clean Server 2008 x86 installation.   I need a SAS controller into it, so I put an LSI SAS 3442X-R SAS controller in there.

Upon booting the server, it seems to load a built in driver and everything seems OK. However, when you power off the server, it will hang the server forever.  I have to hold the power button to force it off.  At that point, if I turn the server back on, it will never boot the OS.  It will hang at the Server 2008 splash screen (with those green lines running across the screen forever)

I have to remove the card, and then the server boots just fine.  After booting back up (with the card removed), I have to remove the installed driver (enabling the viewing of hidden hardware, and then turn on view hidden devices).  Once I uninstall the driver, I can once again repeat the procedure or putting in the card, and server will boot one time, but will hang on shutdown and hang on bootup.

Due to budget limitations, this is the only hardware I have available to work.  I know the server is stable, and I know the card works (it works perfectly under a Windows 2003 server)

Now I know this LSI Logic card is very old (circa 2005), and I've not found any mention of any support for Server 2008, except for the fact that on LSI's own site, there are drivers for Server 2008 and even Server 2008 R2 x64.

So it would be odd that LSI provides drivers for an OS that it then does not support?

Of course, I did try to install the drivers that LSI's site provides.  Oddly when I point the device to this driver, it says the driver installed already is fine.  So what I did was once again remove the device, and then I replaced the server's built in driver with the LSI provided driver.  So the next time I repeated this process, it now loads the more up to date LSI provided drivers, but the same issue still occurs.  The server can only boot one time, and will hang on shutdown and will hang on startup.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Here is the link for the 2008 Drivers I found:

Hello

Last night we have lost a Logical Drive on our DPM Server. In the IML Log Viewer we can see that all Disks are repaired on the same time. The Description is

External Storage Enclosure Device Failure (Bay n, Box n, Port 1E, Slot 6)

this Information we can see 12 times, after this Information’s we have the following critical error

Internal SAS Array Storage Enclosure Processor Failure (Box 1, Port 1E, Slot 6)

Last night we had no maintenance in the Datacenter, and non-power interruption.

Have somewhere an idea what can be the behaver?

ilo4 configuration dump

I am looking at how to export a manually configured ilo4 parameters.  The goal is to push that config out (after programmatic tweaking for each unique server) to all systems as a common config.

I have used hpqlocfg.exe in the past, but I cannot find a sample or cmd to export EVERYTHING.  Any suggestions on how to do this?

Also it would be nice to use the RestAPI to do this whole process (Export and import).  However I could not find the data in any type when connected to the ilo.  Can the RestAPI even do this?

Hello,

Is there a way to launch a Java remote console (Graphical) via HP command line tools? Instead of launching a remote console via the HP iLO4 web interface, I'm looking for a way to do it via command line.

Thanks,

Hello,

Is it okay to use these drives together?

BF036863B5 HPB3

and

BF0368A4CA HPB5

I realize they are the same spare number (289241-001) and have been advised by the supplier that they are functionally identical and compatible but wanted to get verification from HP on this.

Thanks!
