I have a DL360 with 36GB Mirrored disks, data size is only approx 9GB.

One of the drives has failed, and i was wondering is there any way to replace it with an 18GB then rebuild the data and replace the other 36GB with another 18GB.

I have a lot of spare 18's and no 36's btw

Problems Expanding Array

Hi folks!

HW setup as follows

Proliant ML370

SA 6402 connected to internal as well as External Storage Works diskcabinett

Internal disks
2 * 18,2 GB RAID 1 (Array A)

external disks
7 * 72,8 GB RAID 5 (Array B)

All the related HW has the latest FW and drivers.

Now to my problems...

Array B was previously configured with 36,4 GB disks.
I've replaced all the 36 GB disks with 72 GB disks, one by one.

After I replaced all the drives, I got 240 GB of unused space in the Array. The original logical disk is 218 GB.

When I want to expand the logical drive, it only allows me to expand to 260 GB.

That gives me 180 GB of unused space...

Could the problem be that when the array originally was created they didnt choose max boot?

Im not sure, but if you dont choose "max boot" the max size of a logical disk would be 260 GB, if "max boot is choosen then the max size would be 512 GB

If so...

Do I have to delete the Array and start over again? Can i afterwards choose "max boot"?

A complete restore of the disk takes about 16 hours, naturally i want skip that scenario...

In other words...

Heeeeeelp! (:

Can I move a mirrored array from a dead DL360 server to another server?

Hello,

Today, one of our older DL360 G4 servers died and the problem seems to be system board related. This server is out of warranty, but the data on the hard drives is very important to us (we have a 1 week old backup but we'd like to recover the changes since if possible).

My question is, can this 2-disk mirrored array be moved to another Proliant server? I tried moving one of the drives to a DL385 but the ACU only detects the drive as "Unused space", it does not seem to recognize any of the array configuration.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Performance slowdown on Updates and Restore

Hello
We have an ML370 R04 Server running SAP used as our QES System in our SAP Landscape. I recently refreshed the system by restoring a copy of our Production DB and doing a Client copy to change the Client No. etc.
All of this ran fine except all steps involving Restore of the DB and subsequent updates in the DB took much longer than expected.
I have done the same process on this server a number of times before and so I had accurate times for each step, however they took between 2 and 3 times longer to execute than expected. As an example the DB Restore was expected to take 90 minutes to complete but took almost 160 minutes. Adding a 4GB file to a tablespace on the DB took 5 minutes while adding a similar sized file to the Prod DB took about 1.5 minutes (both servers are virtually identical).
The server has a SmartArray 6400 controller and the Disk Array is a RAID-5 configuration. A review of Job logs indicates that update jobs run on the server in recent months have had a marked increase in runtimes.
Any ideas on where to look for source of problem would be helpful as I have not seen any error messages in the system logs which would point to a problem.

TIA.

ml350 ide or scsi options

I have a ML350 G1 running SBS2003. I am using an ide drive as backup storage since the machine is at a remote site and I don't have anyone to swap tapes.

The 40gig drive I started with is running thin on space so I attempted to place a 160gig drive in it. Apparently the bios does not handle anything that large. As it fails to recognize the drive at boot and causes all kinds of other issues when it is plugged in.

Any ideas on what other options I have for fixed disk backup destinations?

cpqissm error ID 9 in event viewer

I have a proliant DL580 with 2 SA5300 controllers and 2 4354 drive enclosures. It's our company's Outlook server.

The day before yesterday the System event log started filling up with this error [which I put at the bottom of this message]. I called in and I was told that this is a driver issue, but that does not make a lot of sense to me because this server has been chugging along with out this error for months, and we did not change any drivers.

Does anyone have any idea what it means or what conditions cause the error?

Is it ok to add ultra scsi 3to this system?

Thanks

Waiting for rebuild - Smart Array 5300

Hi,
I've a Smart Array 5300 running in a Proliant ML530G2. A few days ago i've changed a bad hard disk with a new one, present in a Raid 5 logical drive. But the problem is that the rebuilding process does not start. The ACU 6.40 keeps showing "Waiting for Rebuild" in the Status column. The System Event log shows a Warning event id = 1200 (...logical drive number x on the array controller has a new status of 6 = readyForRebuild...).
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks

Drive expansion succeeded Windows directory size shows unchanged

We have 2 Proliant servers in a Cluster configuration attached to an MSA1000, We swapped all the 72 gig drives with 145 gig drives on at a time and let them rebuild, next we did an expansion and then made the changes in the Windows OS.
This process was done on sets of drives.
Both look successful in ACU, Diskpart, and the disk administrator Grapical discription of the drive, however doing a directory of the drive in dos, or in windows shows the orrriginal 67 gigs of space.

Has anyone seen this and is there a fix?

Time Estimate - Service Release 5.6 on DL Prol 100 G1

Has anybody run the Service Release 5.6 DVD on a Proliant DL100 G1 (or any DL100)?
My manager has requested a time estimate on how long this takes. Since I have never run this disc, I have no information to base an answer on. Just a rough estimate will do fine. Thank you.

diskpart.exe align=? for Exchange 2003

Hardware is DL380 using SA6400 with 4 - 73Gb SCSI drive setup in a RAID1+0.

Does anyone know what the "recommended" number is for the align=?? switch for DiskPart.exe is?
I'm building an exchange server which has locally attached storage (not san) and I want to align the sectors but I'm not sure if I should use:
align=64 or align=128 or some other number for HP hardware.

Mirrored Drive Problem

I have a Proliant DL 360 with two 72.8 GB hot swap drives. The drives are mirrored. I have ordered a new drive but in the mean time the server periodically fails and reboots. It can't get all the way back up because of the failed drive. I have other drives that I can substitute in the mean time but they are the 36.4 GB drives. The server is ot using anywhere neare even 10 GB. Will these work? Is there any way that I can bypass checking for the mirrored drive temporarily?

Expand DL380 G7

Hello everybody,

we currently use a ProLiant DL380 G7 with

2x 300GB SAS (6G DP 10K) HP Part: 507284-001

6x 1TB SATA MDL (3G 7.2K) HP Part: 626162-001

as a destination for Veeam Backup. Right now we are running out of disk space and want to expand the system in the most economical way. Therefore we are considering to replace the 1TB Harddisks wiht larger ones or to expand the system with a second drive cage /additional Disks.

What do you think is the best way? Is the system capable of handling disks larger then 1TB (HP or 3rd Party)?

Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

Tuning the Smart Array

Hi all,

I manage a Proliant 350ML (win 2k3) with a Smart Array 6402 with 5 ultra 320 15k disks. Disks are divided into two arrays: a RAID 1 (2 disks, OS files) and a RAID 5 (3 disks, file server and database).

I'd really appreciate if someone taught me how I should choose stripe size for best performance. The average file size is 171 KB for RAID 1 and 202 KB for RAID 5. Moreover, accordignly to network statistic, I/O balance on RAID 5 is about 90% reading and 10% writing.

Thanks in advance,
andrea.
