Can anyone share their experiences regarding use of this controller under Linux 2.4.21 and greater. I'm considering purchasing a DL380 with a SmartArray 6402 and installing Slackware 9.1 with Linux Kernel 2.4.23.

Thanks.

Compaq (Adaptec) Ultra160 SCSI card connected to ADIC Scalar 100 tape library

i'm having much difficulty getting my compaq ultra160 card to recognize the scalar 100 during the bus scan. i know the card is being recognized by the server (proliant ml370 g3, win2k) because the hp ultra3 bios (rev 3.02.2) shows up before the scan but then nothing is found, even though the library is connected, so i get the message that 'SCSI BIOS (are) not installed' following the scan. when windows boots up and i log on, i see a string of error messages in the system log (the driver detected a controller error...adpu160m...event id 11) until i disconnect the library. i've tried several revisions of the driver for this card with no luck.

i talked to ADIC and they hadn't heard of such a problem (of course). they said the library is pretty dumb and should simply be recognized by the system when attached. oh, if it were so easy! i'm wondering if the library isn't a wide device and the card is, then problems might arise. i figured the card would step down automatically but that doesn't seem to be happening. i can't for the life of me figure out how to change the BIOS on the card itself, though. it's not a retail adaptec product, so the alt-p (or whatever it is) doesn't work. i can't find any place in the compaq server BIOS to modify the card settings like turning off the wide capabilities.

hopefully somebody out there has run into this issue. would appreciate any tips you could provide. if you need more information from me, i'd be happy to provide it.

thank you very much.

Backgroup parity initialization

I have 3 arrays configured on a proliantML570, with RAID1+0 on arrayA (for OS) and RAID5 on arrayB and C(for data). After I extented arrayC, the background parity initialization started running. Now, while this is happening, I tried to upgrade the hard drives of arrayB(RAID5), but after swapping the drives, the controller(SA6402) lost all the array configuration including the ones I didn't change.
My question is: should it pick up the configuration for the arrays that had not been changed? Or am I only allowed to upgrade the HDD's after the parity initialization is completed on the other array?
How long will it take to do the parity initialization on a 546GB RAID5 array?

Smallest Rack size possible for DL380p?

Hi,

I have a HP Proliant DL380p Gen8 Server. When I measure from the inside bracket edge to the back of the server body I measure 700mm.

I have a 19in rack that I could use, that is 700mm from 19in rack hole to hole. See attached picture.

Question: Although this is on the limit, will it fit?

Note: I have to ship the rack to me from another site, so I can't test this myself.

Thanks,

HP Proliant DL 360 G5 iLO 2 Upgrade Inquiry

Hello,

I have a pair of the sibject servers running VMware vSphere 4.1 (ESXI 4.1). I want to upgrade the iLO firmware on these servers but I have to know a couple of things before doing this:

  1. if I go through the web interface, will it require me to restart the servers or will iLO simply restart?
  2. Even if the servers don't have to be restarted, will I need to vMotion all of the VM's off the server I'm working on to perform the upgrade?
  3. What is the FTP link to download the iLO 2 firmware for this model of server? When I attempt to access the Proliant DL360 G5 Support page, it tells me it is 'Forbidden.'
  4. If three is invalid, is it because iLO 2 is the same across all servers that have it and the same version can be used to upgrade the firmware on all iLO-based servers?

Thanks all,

Johnathan

Moving array from one server to another

I've got two similarly configured DL380G2 servers - dual proc, 1GB RAM, 5302/64 controller, mirrored 18GB OS volume.

One server has a 4-disk RAID 5 array using 18GB U3 drives with approximately 40GB of data.

The other has a 4-disk RAID 5 array using 72GB U3 drives and it is completely empty.

I want to swap out the 18GB drives with the 72GB drives to make more room available.

What's the easiest way to go about this? Remove the 18GB drives, put in the new 72's, create the volume and restore from tape?

Could I create the array on the second server, copy the data over from the first server and then simply plug the new drive in the old server?

SmartArray 532 perfomance

I have Compaq ML370 G3 server with SmartArray 532 controller, installed in 64-bit 100Mhz PCI-slot. There are disk-cage with 4 disks connected to array controller by Ultra-3 scsi cable with active terminator. Volumes organazed as 2 mirrors (2 disks in each volume).
When I copy a file (about 700Mb) from one mirror to another, the speed of transfer is 5-6 Mb/s. It very slowly: really transfer speed of that file from one IDE 7200 disk to another is about 20Mb/s.
There are no errors in Array Diagnostic. ROM BIOS is newest ver. 2.38
What is wrong?

Hi,

I 've installed a system with 14 disks in a storagework 4354 connected to a smart array5304 in a ML370.

When I launch the volume creation to have an ADG (or RAID6) I cannot create a volume>1TB.
Is there a limitation with 5304?

thanks

Storage Enclosure not responding

I have a ProLiant DL380 with a Smart Array 4200 controller to which Im trying to connect a Storage enclosure. But regardless of what bus on the controller I connect the enclosure to I get the following error at boot:
1775-Slot 2 Drive Array ProLiant Storage Enclosure Not Responding
Both server and controller have the latest firmware and I've tried both connectors on the enclosure without success. I've also removed all disks from the enclosure but no go. Im running out of troubleshooting options here - anyone have an idea what it could be?

p411 controller battery not detected

Hello, I have a P411 controller in a DL380 G6 attached to an external array.  ACU does not detect a battery (see attached screenshot) but I know there is a battery pack.  I removed the riser, removed the controller, detached the battery pack and cable, reinstalled everything.  I even noticed the battery has a green light once powered on, but ACU still shows Battery/Capacitator Pack Count = 0.  How do I troubleshoot this?  do I have a bad battery/controller/cable/chip?

Thanks,

P410i controller - converting raid-0 to raid-1

Hi,

we have a windows 2003R2 server with a 410i controller. The first array has one disk drive and one logical

drive which holds the operating system. I have installed one more drive and want to mirror the boot disk.

When I choose the first array in the ACU gui, I have the choice of "expand array".

If I press this option will I then be able to build a raid 1, without loosing data?

And can this be done online?

Smart Array 3 disk RAID 5 to 2 disk RAID 1 migration

$

Hello people, please take into account I'm not an native english speaker.

I'm wondering if this is at all possible:

We have an Proliant ML530 G2. It has an Smart Array 431, firmware version 1.24. We have an RAID 5 volume from a 3x18GB disk set. This logical drive is therefore 36GB in size, and is being used as a Windows 2000 system disk (boot).

What I'm trying is to change this configuration to an RAID 1 volume with two disks. Of course, two bigger disks so the 36GB fit in (actually I have some 36 and 72GB disks around). The idea is to do this without making an backup, reconfiguring the array and restoring after that.

Online RAID level migration with an Smart Array, from what I've seen so far, only can extend the RAID 5 volume to an 4 disk set RAID 1, but that's not what I want. I want the volume to shrink into 2 disks.

¿Do any of you fellows know if this is at all possible? ¿Maybe some alternate way to do it? I just don't fully trust a system disk restore, because I've never done it befor

Swapping SA 431 and SA 3200

$

Can someone shed some information if there would be performance gain to what I'm planning to do?

We have a Smart Array 3200 with Ultra3 drives in an ML370G1 and an SA 431 with Ultra2 drives in an ML350G1. My plan is to swap the controllers such that Ultra3 drives in ML370G1 will have an Ultra3 controller (SA 431)and the Ultra2 drives in ML350G1 will have Ultra2 controller (SA 3200). Both servers would eventually function as DCs, File & Print Servers in an Win 2003 environment with the ML350G1 to serve 30-user branch office.

Thanks in advance.

Boot order with SSP

I have configured a DL380 G3 server to boot from a logical drive on an MSA500. Using SSP, I have made 2 logical drives available to this server. However, because the boot drive is a "higher" number in SSP, the server tries to boot from the wrong logical drive and fails to boot. How can I control which logical drive the server uses to boot?
TIA
