DL360 G5 RAID

Hi guys,

I have a DL360 G5 with 6 disks. in a RAID1 configuration.

I have a used disk that is not currently in the server but contains data that I need to retrieve.
Please can someone advise the best way of getting this data from the disk? I would put it into the server to retrieve, however this will start off an automatic rebuild, which will lose the data. Is there a way around this?

Thanks in advance.

iLO4 unreachable

On a large number of my company's DL360p Gen8 servers the iLO appears to be completely unreachable.

We are running CentOS 6.6, the iLO firmware is at 2.30.

The servers are off warranty and the cost of swapping out the system board is too high.

The symptoms are:
Errors during post: Instead of getting the message to hit F8 to configure, I get an error message. See attached picture.

Intelligent provisioning won't load: I hit F10 during POST, it marks that I hit it, but it makes no visible effort to load it. hitting F11 and then choosing intelligent provisioning does nothing, also.

Running hponcfg at the OS prompt gives errors. I ran it twice in the example shown the errors are slightly different.

[root@cnt]# hponcfg

[root@cnt ~]#

When I run ipmitool nothing happens, I have hit cntl-c to get back to the prompt.

On some of the servers the iLO responds to pings, some don't.

The ones that respond to pings, seem to allow loading of the iLO logon page, but it doesn't allow me to put in any user information and that page loads extremely slowly.

I have tried the following:

Disconnecting all power for a full minute and powering back up.

Re-running the firmware install for version 2.30 from the OS prompt. This returned erorrs similar to hponcfg.

Toggling system maintenance switch 1 and 6 and booting in between.

Why is HP's website a constant struggle?  ive been in IT for 10 years, and HP's website has never worked.  Timeout's, slow page loads, cant find serial numbers, cant link warranties, carepacks not showing up, why is this an issue for so long?

Anyways, i need someone from HP to contact me that can get my servers added, everytime i put in SN/PN it says it cant find it....

HP Array P410, HDD changed, but still predict to fail soon

On HP Proliant DL G6, one disk in RAID 1 on P410 array broken. It was HP EG0300FBDBR. I changed it on compatible HP model - HP EG0300FAWHV. (both 300 Gb, 10K)

But HP Array Configuration Utility still show me - that new HP EG0300FAWHV - 300 GB 2-Port SAS Drive at Port 1I : Box 1 : Bay 0 is predicted to fail soon.

New disk in server blinking green - is like "The drive is rebuilding, erasing, or it is part of an array that is undergoing capacity expansion or stripe migration."

But two days gone and status didn't change.

ML110 G7, fans go on full, no VGA out or HD activity

After suffering a powower outage, my "trusty" ML110 G7 has a problem, it won't boot :-(

When I connect power to it, the fans come on at full blast, but nothing further happens, no VGA output, no disk activity, and the NIC does not show link.

No response to the power button, even if held in for 9 seconds, the only way to make the noise stop is to pull the power again.

I have tried removing the CMOS battery for 10 minutes and powering up, but no joy.

It is/was my home test box for hyper-v, so no carepaq on it and it is out of warranty.

Is it time to replace it ?

Cheers

Question on swaping HDs

I have an HP ProLiant DL380G6 server with a failed HD. I have an old HP ProLiant DL380G6 server sitting around with the same typ of HDs. 6G DP 10K SAS 300 GB Spare 507284-001.

I want to know if I can take one from the server that is just sitting there and swap it in for the failed HD? It more than likely still has data on it so I wan to make sure that will not cause and issue during the rebuild process.

Thanks,

Install Hyper-V in a HP 32GB microSD Mainstream Flash Media Kit

Hello we bought a ml350g9 for virtualization through Hyper-V.
Our HP sales-specialist has strongly advised us to install hyper-v on "HP 32GB microSD Flash Mainstream Media Kit" rather than RAID1 SAS.
Do you think this choice is right? I have some doubts in installing the operating system on a single SD card.

Thanks in advance

Strange bad sequential write speed of the H240ar disk controller in RAID1 mode

Hi all!

I am currently doing setup of server DL360 Gen9 (K8N32A) with H240ar controller (2GB cache + battery) and 2 SAS HDD (15k).
I have updated BIOS and the latest Firmware (v3.56 for H240ar).

I had the strange results when done dumb testing with sequential writes using "dd" (OS FreeBSD 10.2).

1) When I did the test in HBA mode (software mirror) I got excellent results (I compared the results with two other similar servers):

# diskinfo -t da0
da0

2) But then I decided to use the Hardware RAID1 mode with r/w cache (default settings). And I got the odd bad result:

# diskinfo -t da0

3) I tried to disable write cache, but it didn't help:

I see that according to the test results the "Transfer rates" parameter better when the cache active, but this is not consistent with the results of tests with "dd".
And I'm very surprised that the results when you disable write cache for RAID1 does not coincide with the results for HBA-mode.

Can anyone explain this strange result?
This result is a consequence of incorrect system settings or a feature of the disk controller?
For example, do I need to align the disks when using RAID mode of H240ar disk controller (this was done in HBA mode)?

HP DL120 G9 server with SSD

Hi,

I need a not very expensive server, but i need very fast Hard Drives.

My choise here is HP DL120G9, but the hard drive controller does not support SSD, i was considering to buy P420i .

The idea is to create RAID 10 with 4 SSD for the database and files and RAID 1 with 2 SAS or SSD for O.S.

My choise for SSD is the Samsung Serie 850 Pro 1TB.

But maybe i could chose SAS 1TB 7.2k or SAS 900GB 10K, the performance is not the same, but i have been using SCSI and SAS all my life and it always did the job.

What are your thoughts on SSD on a database Server?

the O.S is Windows 2012 Server.

The program runs on SQL express.

The program the users will work, is intense, it will end the papper usage in the company. Everything is to be done in the program, reports, photos uploads, financial, administration services, etc etc. So has you can see it will have alot disk usage.

The company is small, it's about 10 users, but it have alot of work, and it's growing.

My view for this server is to work for about 10 to 15 years.

I know this will come down to the price, but just forget that for awhile, what is your expert opinion.

Hello,

I have long time searched, and i don't know if i can put an HP Proliant ML350 g8 or 9 into an 10636 G2 rack.

I saw new racks be 75mm more deeper.

I think that's change not many.

But my question is :  Can i put Proliant Gen8 or 9 into an 10636 G2 Rack ?

Server 2012 Gen8 - User profile service failed the logon

Hello All,

I was recently asked to help resolve a logon issue with a Gen 8 server running 2012 Essentials. The default Administrator account was disabled by the previous Admin, and the owner's login credentials fail with the message: "The user profile service failed the logon. The profile cannot be loaded." A permissions issue on the Users folder perhaps?

Normally, I would boot from the installation media and either overwrite sethc.exe or Utilman.exe with cmd.exe to gain access, but when booting from the HP media I am not able to get to the windows/system32 directory. I am unfamiliar with iLO and doubt if this company paid for a license to activate it, but noticed in the documentation there was a User Management utility. Does that control Windows accounts or iLO accounts?

Be fore I do anything drastic, I thought I would ask here to see if there is a built in utility, or media utility that would help me regain access to the server. Right now, nobody can logon to the server console using any account, but domain users can logon to workstations as normal.

Thank you for any advice.

Hi

I wonder if someone can advise...

I bought the following server:

ML350 G5 Tower (6LFF) Xeon Quad Core E5450 3.0Ghz, 32GB RAM, 2x 600GB 15K SAS

I purchased this in order to install AzureStack but unfortunately I have found that this server is not SLAT enabled.  My question is do I have any options which would allow me to upgrade the hardware (CPU) in order to install AzureStack?

Thanks

Hi everybody,

I'm new to HPE and therefore I'm in trouble with this specific issue. I've update my server DL380 G7 with bootable Smart update V2014.09. All update are done, but now , at boot the controller say that I need to update to HPDA disk firmware. Now I've check on my system and I've HPD5, and seem that pass directly from HPD5 to HPDA is not possible. On the system is installed vmware therefore I can't execute any windows executable. How can do this intermediate update?

Many thanks

Regards

DL360Gen9 hangs on Linux boot occasionally

$

We have 6 pieces DL360Gen9 servers which ALL sometimes do not start correctly and hang during Linux boot. We have more than 20 pieces DL360pG8 where the problem DOES NOT happen.

After 3 weeks of extensive testing and trying to find out why the problem happens only very few times and not during every boot we were able to narrow down the problem to a very small but critical issue.

The server hangs when calling BIOS Int13h to write data to disk. Obviously this only happens sometimes and only while loading the operating system and before the disk controller driver is loaded which probably replaces BIOS Int13h calls.

It is quite easy to repeat this problem by booting MSDOS 6.22 or FreeDOS from hard disk or from a USB stick and by starting the following batch file:

:loop

copy c:\command.com c:\test.tst

goto loop

It takes from 10 seconds to 4 hours for the problem to appear (this is probably the reason why the Linux boot does not hang every time but only occasionally) . Under MSDOS either a red screen of death appears or the copy command hangs. Under FreeDOS the following error is displayed on the screen: Invalid Opcode at D057 0206 0A82 ... We installed the SmartArray Controller firmware 3.56 and the BIOS 1.52. Attached are the screenshots of the error under MSDOS and FreeDOS.

HP support refuses to accept this as an issue because they claim that in AHS they cannot see any error and for them all the hardware (exchangable parts) is working correctly and they cannot do anything.

Does anybody know if there is a solution or how to correctly report this issue to HPE? There must be or there will be others who will be affected by this problem, although only occasionally.
