DL380 G5 - CPU upgrade E5335 to E5472 No Video

$

Hi,

I have a pair of Xeon E5472 CPUs I wanted to use to upgrade one of my DL380 G5 servers but after doing so I get no video, all fans run at 100% and iLO thinks the old CPUs are still in there while the insight front panel reports no faults. Putting the old E5335s in results in the server coming up as normal. With the CPUs in, the diagnostic lights on the inside read as follows and do not change:

Front ------------------------------ Back
OFF ON OFF OFF OFF OFF OFF OFF

I'm currently guessing I need to update the BIOS firmware to enable support for these CPUs but wanted to throw this out in case anyone knew of any other reasons why the system doesn't seem to be taking the upgrade?

For reference, this has system board 436526-001 which does support these CPUs according to my research. It has 32Gb RAM (8x4Gb all identical) also. Anyone else with a VMware lab experienced this at all?

HP DL360 G4p - maximum possible SATA HDD capacity

We have obsolete HP ProLiant DL360 G4p server with 2x SATA HDD of 500 GB.
According to the HP Product Bulletin, the highest possible option for this server is HP 750GB 1.5G SATA 7.2K 3.5" HDD.
My question is - can the embedded SATA-controller of this server to work with larger capacity disks (1-2-3-4 TB).
Thanks in advance!

ASR debugging

Hey there,

I am new to HP servers, and I was reading up on the ASR feature. I suspect that this feature is responsible for our sudden server reboots and would like to know how I can find out if this is true.

Is it possible to detect if the ASR feature is enabled without booting into the BIOS? how can I find out if ASR is the reason the server rebooted? (again, without booting into the BIOS)

Thanks for the help.

Need more space

I have a DL380 G5 with a Smart Array P400 and am running out of space on one of my drives. There are 3 arrays made up of 8 disks. The array in question is RAID 1+0 and made up of 4, 146GB SAS drives. My question is can I replace maybe 2 of the drives to increase the space? Or do I need to replace them all on-by-one with larger drives until everything is synched up and then expand the array? Would that even work? Thanks in advance.

MIB Change on Proliant G8?

Hi,

I'm trying to add the OID to monitor HP physical disks status on my DL380 G8 with WIndows 2012 and MIB walker tool cannot find anything for this model. I am using  OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.232.3.2.5.1.1.6 and no instances are appearing. WHen I use the same OID on a Proliant G7 with Windows 2008 it works fine. I have several G8's with the same issue. Was there any kind of change in the OS or HP MIB from the G7 to G8? I know the SNMP credentials are correct, I'm pretty sure all the correct HP agents are loaded on the server. What else can I check?  Thanks in advance.

DL380 Gen9 BIOS Upgrade

Hi All

I  need to upgrade BIOS in our DL380 Gen9 to avoid problems with Timezone and DST.

I've got the Online ROM Flash Component  (1.52_11-10-2015(2 Dec 2015), and we're planning to upgrade as soon as possible. I have some questions:

Of course on server we've alredy installed all software (Operating system (WIndows server 2012 R2) and other softwares we need for the server.  The server is running and we don't want to lose anything!

Is there any risk to loose actual Array config?

Is there any risk to corrupt operatinfg system?

I want to be sure that after BIOS upgrade the server will continue to run without problems.

Tanks

Erny

DL380 G8 - Fan Speed Increase when adding expansion card

I've noticed when adding a expansion card (NIC) into my DL380 G8 the fan speeds increase, I've installed the newest HP Service Pack with the latest drivers, tried a few different cards in different slots (1-3) but can't seem to get the fans down, without the cards fans 5/6 run about 27% and with the cards fans 5/6 run about 43%. I've also verfied the BIOS thermal settings are set to optionmized. I'm sure this is prob by design, but is there anything I can do to quiet down the server.

I have a HP Proliant ML310e Gen8 v2 Server with a B120i RAID Controller.   There are 4 2TB hot swap SATA 6Gb/s 7200 rpm drives.   I am configuring the RAID 1+0 for the system.   This server will be domain controller.

Strip Size: 256 KiB

Full Stripe Size: 512 KiB

Sectors/Track: 32

Max Size: 3.6 TiB

Caching Enabled

I have the options of either

1. Max for MBR Partiion Table (2097152) MiB (2 TiB)

2. Maximum Size 3815394 (3.6 TiB)

3. Custom Size

What size should I set for the server as a Domain Controller.

Proliant DL380 G7 Won't Start Without Both Power Supplies

$

Hi,

I have an HP Proliant DL380 G7 that has dual 460 watt power supplies.  If I have both power supplies plugged in at the same time, then the server will boot and get through the POST just fine.  If only one of the power supplies is connected (doesn't matter which), the system starts and seems to be working, but when the POST reaches the "power and thermal calibration" stage, the server suddenly powers off without warning.  The power button turns amber and the system health light flashes read. The health indicator light for the connected power supply also turns on (the light for the disconnected power supply was always on).  No other lights are on (for example, the power cap light remains off).

I have updated the BIOS and reset everything to defaults, but this issue persists.  Does anybody have any ideas where to look? This system is out of warranty and I don't want to purchase a support contract since everything else is working just fine.  Thanks.

EDIT: It doesn't make a difference if I try it with one of the power supplies removed; the result is the same.

DL360 Gen9 and write caching

We have a DL360 Gen9 that we need to enable write caching on with Windows Server 2012R2. I can definitely confirm it's on on the controller using the Smart Storage Administrator but whenever I try to change it in Windows I get an error saying I can't change the settings. It's 5 disks in a RAID5 config.

Any thoughts?

HP DL380 G6 RAID 1+0 - 2 drives, both predicted failure - Will not rebuild

$

Hi there,

I have inherited a HP DL360 G6 that is displaying 'Predicted Failure' on both of the two drives in the RAID array.

I attended the server location today with a new drive and HOT swap replaced it nad was hoping for the array to be rebuilt, but it stopped at 4% of the rebuild process and then went to 'Ready to rebuild' and marked the new drive as 'predicted failure'.

I wasn't watching the process the first time round, but took out the new drive and put it back in again and it did the same thing. Failing again at 4%.

I suspect that I am now going to have to perform a re-install due to drive errors, but as the server is still online, I'd like to try and avoid this.

Is there a process I can follow to recover the system? Obviously I'll be backing up the data, but I was wondering if I could add any additional drives in the other slots to have it rebuild there? Or is it unlikely that I can recover the system? I suspect if the server reboots it will not restart.

I'm happy to provide more detailed errors on request.

DL180 g6 running Open-E RAID Software - Cache Controller Failure

$

Hello,

I've recently taken over as IT Director at a small school district for someone that unexpectedly passed away.  I'm currently the only full-time IT person at the school.

When in the CLI for my Open-E RAID software, setting the target to the controller results in a message that the cache has failed and must be replaced so no configuration changes are allowed.  I discovered this when replacing a failed drive and the new drive never synced up.  Shortly thereafter a second drive came out of sync.  Out of 7 installed drives, 5 are blinking and 2 are solid green lights, one of which was the one that was put in as a replacement.

I checked in the CLI to see the hardware info and verified that it's running an HP Smart Array P410.  If I replace this P410 with a new one, would that essentially solve the problem without causing any new issues?  Just as a clarification, this is a software raid running from a separate boot device that is not located within any of the drives allocated to the RAID.  If so, I'll move forward with that.  Otherwise, I'll have to figure out what my other options are.

Proliant ML 350 G6

My servers are losing connectivity. I have 4 servers in the network, two of them are Proliant ML 350 G6 servers and they are losing connectivity with each other. One is the domain controller, one is the Exchange server. They both have HP NC326i PCIe Dual Port Gigabit Server Adapters. The driver version on the NICs is 16.4.0.1 from 10/16/2013. The adapters are not teamed because I get an error each time I try to team them. The NICs are configured for 1000 Mb Full Duplex on the server and Auto Negotiation on the switch. On the switch I see Packets with Errors on the interface where these two servers are connected. These are the only two interfaces on the switch reporting Packets with Errors. Both servers are running Windows Server 2008 R2, fully updated.

The Exchange server will lose its rights to Active Directory on the AD server causing problems with Exchange services. The SACL rights are displayed in the Application log in event viewer, eventid 2080. The SACL rights to the domain controller will just drop and I can not find what is happening that makes them drop.

My questions are: 1. How should the speed & duplex be configured on the server and on the switch?

What could be causing the Packets with Errors on the switch?

What could be causing the loss of SACL rights to the domain controller?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
