Migrating motherboard from rack-mount case into tower case

$

Can I remove the motherboard from my DL380 G5 (2U rack-mount server) and install it in an equivalent tower case, for example, an ML350 or ML370 ?

I'm aware that the CPU heatsink/cooling fins might not be suitable for tower case fans, but I can always change them, and it's likely that an old ML350 will come with at least one LG771 cooler.

I've changed ATX motherboards hundreds of times, but know pretty much nothing about server motherboard sizes ;)

HP ML10 v2: set the correct boot order for HDD

Hi!

I'm a new owner of a HP ML10 v2 (G3240).

I set in the bios the sata controller on this "ENABLE SATA AHCI SUPPORT".

I also installed 3 HDD:

port 1: 1Tb HDD (the one sold with the server, empty)

port 2: 1,5Tb HDD (not empty)

port 5: 30Gb SSD (this is placed in a ODD bay and connected to the first SATA port free in the motherboard).

Today I have installed ESXi 6 (with the HP custom image) in the SSD drive: all was fine, but the system can not boot from the SSD. If I disconnect the 2 HDD on port 1 and 2, ESXi can boot normally.

It seems to me that the system test if the first HDD drive is bootable and, if not, it goes forward.

How can I set the system to boot from SSD?

Thanks for attention.

Hi to all.

This error comes up booting to a fresh install Debian (HP DL160se  G6) (se316m1)

[Firmware Bug]: the BIOS has corrupted hw-PMU resources (MSR 38d is 330)

alg: rsa: test failed on vector 4, err=-74

ERST: failed to get Error Log Address Range.

Failed to find cpu0 device node

Can I safely ignoring this error?  I have set "Processor Power and Utilization Monitoring" EV to Disabled, but it doesn't resolve problem.

Is BIOS R02 05/15/2010 latest? I try re-flash BIOS by other ROMPaq, but they are not suitable.

Sorry for my English.

-We are planning to buy a ML350 Gen 9 server for the IOPS requirement of 5000, so We have estimated 42 x 300GB SAS 10k Hard Drives in RAID 10 to fulfill the requirement.

-Above mentioned Server comes with  'HPE Flexible Smart Array P440ar/2GB ' as storage controller which support RAID10

should I purchase an additional HP 12G SAS Expander Card to fullfill the above requirement or

Deafult Controller does support for all of internal attached 42 Hard Drives ?

HP DL60 Gen9 Controller Options

Hi,

We recently purchased a DL60 Gen9 server (Code: 788079-425 HP DL60 Gen9 E5-2603v3 NHP Eu Svr/GO). However the disk performance of the server under VMware is very very slow. The server has 4 SATA drives configured as RAID 5. My question is can I install an HP Smart Array P440 controller in the server for use with the installed SATA drives? My dealer says the controller is incompatible with the server but HP lists it as an option.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Chronic reboot problem on HP DL385P G8

$

We have a DL385P G8 that has been rebooting since September 2015.  HP has replaced most of the memory, motherboard (2X) and the power backplane.  We have updated firmware, BIOS, turned off ASR, turned on ASR.

Originally, iLO and crash dumps were giving information that HP said was pointing to the problem.  But after changing parts and upgrading firmware, we are no longer getting crash dumps and the HP engineers are unable to gleen anything from the iLO logs.

We verified that everything is setup correctly on the server so that a crash dump should be created in the event of an OS issue.

Microsoft has looked at the server.  HP has replaced so many parts and seems to have no idea what is causing the reboot.  We have checked the UPS and cable to the server.  There is no one in the server room when it reboots.

Any ideas are welcome.  We continue to work with HP but that are not offering any real help.

We have two identical HP DL385P G8 servers and these problems are only on one.

Find disk drive size with WMI

I am trying to gather some specific information about the drives in my array using WBEM / WMI. In particular, I need to know the manufacturer, type (SSD/spindle), speed, and size of each physical drive in the server. I am using HP's Insight Management WBEM Providers to find this information with WMI.

So far I have found the speed in the DriveRotationalSpeed property of HPSA_DiskDrive. SSD vs. Spindle is more or less in the Description property of the same class. Manufacturer is in the Manufacturer property of HPSA_DiskDriveFirmware.

However, nowhere can I find the size of the drive. This seems unbelievable to me, but I have searched through the property name and value of every class in the "root/hpq" namespace and can't find anything. Surely I'm missing something - where can I find this information?

Adding Video Card to HP DL580 G5 Server

The HP DL580 G5 Server comes with an integrated ATI ES1000 with 32MB embedded video SDRAM. This is inadequate for my needs. I need to increase the SDRAM to 512MB minimun.

The server has PCI-e x8 and x4 slots, and I have tried installing x16 and x1 Video cards in them but see no screen display. Could anyone please give me some ideas or recommend video cards that would work on the server?

Thanks.

DL 385 G7 memory configuration

$

Hi,

Someone can help me regarding the memory config for a DL 385 G7 with 2 processors?

I have a total of 32GB: 8 x 4GB (HP 4GB (1x4GB) Single Rank x4 PC3-12800 (DDR3-1600) Registered CAS-11 Memory Kit 676331-B21) and i want to upgrade to minim 192 GB.

Can I add to the existing configuration 12 x 16 GB (HP 16GB (1x16GB) Dual Rank x4 PC3-12800R (DDR3-1600) Registered CAS-11 Memory Kit 684066-B21) for a total of 224GB. It is compatible with the previous memory?

How should i balance the RAM between the 2 processors ( i have 4 channels per CPU)? If it's not possible how many 16GB do i need to obtain minimum 192 GB?

I tried with the HPE memory configurator, but the 1600MHz memory it's not listed at all, even though it is present on the memory compatibility matrix for 385 G7.

Thank you,

PS: Another question, can i mix LPDIMM (low power memory) with standard RDIMM?

ML350e Gen8 Fan Noise

$

I've read many threads related to this issue... but I'm going crazy with the noise these fans generate.

From the quickspecs: operating at 23C ambient temperature the base model is rated at 26 dB  - aditional options may result in increased sound levels.  That's very apparent, considering the Delta fans (PFR0912XHE) used in these are rated at 71 dB each when running at full speed 11,500RPM (185.5cfm air flow).  You've all heard the jet engine take-off sound.

I have the base model, with a single E5-2520 Xeon 6-core @ 1.9GHz.  (Fans #2 and #3 exist, #1 and #4 are blanks). I'm running the latest HP image of ESX 6.0, build 3073146.  iLO firmware is the latest 2.30 from August 19, 2015.   Proliant System ROM is also the latest J02, dated 08/02/2014.  In the BIOS, thermal settings are set to "Optimal Cooling"

Add-on cards: Smart Array P420, firmware version 6.68, and HP NC365T quad NIC, firmware 3.19.0

Regardless of cpu utilization, at 23C ambient temperature fan #2 never drops below 39%, and fan #3 never drops below 31%.  I've even ran prime95 for an extended period of time one one of my VMs (See ESX CPU usage chart), and the CPU temp never went above 40C.  Additionally, the fans remained at 31% and 39% during this time.

I've had a case open with tech support for about a month (this is a production server), and during that time I've taken the following steps (all had zero effect on the fan operation):

1- replaced a non-HP drive in my RAID5 with a HP model (EH0600JDYTL)

2-replaced the non supported HP NC364T network adapter with the supported HP NC365T

3- replaced all RDIMM with HP SmartMemory. (647651-081) 32GB total, 4 x 8GB.

I read here that non HP add-on cards or non HP anything can cause the iLO to increase these fan speeds.

I think something is wrong with how iLO is controlling these fans.  Besides never droppping below 31% and 39%, the fan occasionally ramps up and down slightly (sounds like a siren).  This has nothing to do with the load of the server, as running prime95 does not cause the fans to ramp up.

Lastly, I see in quickspecs that using RDIMMs require the redundant enablement kit (part# 664046-B21)

Could this be related?  We do not have the kit, we have the base non hot swappable 460W power supply.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-Digo

DL380 G5 memory problem

$

I have a DL380 G5 with system board 436526-001 that will not boot with 8 x 8GB RAM modules installed. These are genuine HP modules, part 495604-B21.

Symptoms: Fans start (take off speed!), screen remains blank and the server emits periodic beeps, all 8 DIMM LEDs are amber and red server health LED is lit.

These 8 x 8GB RAM modules work fine in another DL380 G5, and the problem server works fine with 8 x 4GB (32 GB total), so it's not the slots and it's not the RAM.

The BIOS version is Sept 2009

I am almost certain that this revision of system board supports 8GB modules (it supports quad-core E5450 CPUs that I've just dropped in), and I've got two other servers with this configuration working fine. Heck, I even put the 8 x 8GB modules into a DL380 G5 with the older system board 407749-001 and that boots fine with 64GB RAM reported and no problems.

Any suggestions as to what I can try to get the system to recognise 8GB modules? Does anyone know if the later system board (436526-001) definitely supports 8GB modules? This is in the UK, btw, not USA.

Thanks

PSP Upgrade | BL460C

Guys !

Need quick help !

We have a troublesome server - BL460C, for which we tried updating the SPP in Interactive Mode.  All went fine, and server rebooted. On bootup, it was missing NIC/CNA's.  We then again rebooted the server with OFFLINE(.ISO) firmware image for HP Emulex Converged Network Adapters and Network Adapters and issue got fixed.

Now, we need to be sure of -

1. What are the ideal steps to upgrade firmware in this case ?

2. Server is in production with OS running on it.

3.  Is the procedure we followed - SPP upgrade in Interactive + Offline upgrade of Emulux drivers - the correct procedure ?

Or thinking about it, we should have used HP SUM from within the OS ....hmmm

Please suggest !
