HP Proliant ML350 G6 wont start after power off

$

Yesterday, I had to power off our server because of maintenance of the electric grid, ups was getting empty.

When I tried to power on the server it won’t turn on, I have no leds on at all, all is off (power supplies, power backplane, motherboard, front panel are all off)

I have the motherboard with the minimum configuration, only one DIMM and I only have connected the system power connector, the power supply connector from the backplane and the front panel led board connector.

I have tried\checked the following options:

The two power supplies are working I think, I found that short-circuiting pin 1 and 3 off the power supply gives me 12v output on both power supplies.

On the power backplane I only have the pink wire outputting 12V, all others doesn’t output anything.

My question is how to I test the backplane? To see what’s dead, the backplane or the motherboard?

Is there a way like on common AT power sources that just short-circuiting the green + black wire turns on the power source?

Any help is appreciated.

PS: The warranty have expired L

Thanks in advance.

HP System Event Notifier did not notify me of a failed hard drive

Have a Proliant ML360 G6 that experienced a failed drive in a RAID array two days ago.  System Event Notifier is installed and setup, yet it never notified me about the failed drive.  I only knew about it when I walked into the data room and saw the amber light on the failed drive.

The logs show the failed drive, and the System Event Notifier service is running. I can send test notifications to my email and when I plugged in a USB drive to do some immediate backup, the Event Notifier sent me notification that a USB device was plugged in.  Yet it never notified me of the failed drive.  What should I look for as to the cause of this?  All events in System Event Notifier setup are selected.

The array is rebuilding right now, it'll be interesting to see if I get a notification once the array is back to 100%.

Thanks.

I just removed HDD from Bay 1 and keep HDD in Bay 2 only (which was blinking Amber light) so it works properly , no message came , not blinking Amber light its perfect , when I returned the HDD in bay 1 Amber blinking again ... its just brand new HDD. Any solution ???

Where/how to complain about a badly-handled hardware support case?

My DL360p Gen8 had a iLO malfunction that required motherboard replacement although the non-iLO part of the machine was fine. It took the 'engineers' 3 visits on 3 consecutive days to fix the problem and on the second day, they even messed up the machine (I think the 'engineer' didn't put back the CPU properly) so that one of the CPUs kept getting too hot and performance suffered. Apart from incompetence, there were other aspects to their unprofessionalism.

Although the case is now closed and the iLO issue has been fixed, does anyone know where I can escalate the case to bring to HP's attention the unprofessionalism of the 'engineers' who came to handle the case?

Proliant DL380 G7 - Not detecting PCI raid controller

HI all

I have recently purchased a DL380 G7 for internal dev use.

I also bought a Smart array P812 to use with an External MS60 drive array.

With the card installed in the PCI Express X8 slot on the riser, its not detected at all. Swapping the riser to the other slot makes no difference. There are 2 green LED's illuminated at the end of the card, but thats it. Removing all SAS connections doesnt change it either.

The BIOS does not show the card under the list of PCI devices either. The P812 Documentation shows that it should be compatible. What am I missing here?

Many thanks in advance for the assistance.

HI There,

I have a server Dl585g5 and running VMware ESX5.1. IT is getting critical PCI BUS error - PCI Bus Error (Slot 1, Bus 64, Device 13, Function 0) and results in Panic Screen.

However the PCI slot 1 has nothing on it.

Please advise.

Using SSD as cache for RAID array in DL980 G7

$

I am looking at purchasing a used HP DL980 G7 server with 8 10-core E7-4780 processors.  It is to be used for engineering simulation calculations requiring an SMP configuration, as opposed to a distributed-memory setup like a traditional cluster.  This setup will give me 80 physical cores across 8 processors, 512GB of RAM, running Centos 6.8.

I have eight (8) 2.5" hot swap drive bays available, 7 if I reserve one for a standalone boot drive.  I would like to use the others in a RAID 5 array and employ an SSD as a giant drive cache for the RAID array, which though fast compared to a single drive (reading, anyway) will be slow compared to just about any SSD.  The system comes with an HP Smart Array P410i - 1024MB, which supports both SAS drives at 12Gb/s and SATA at 6.0 Gb/s.

I am OK with using one of the 2.5" bays for the SSD and connecting it through the RAID controller but could also install a separate PCIe-based drive, though this system only supports PCIe 2.0.

Does anyone have any good advice on the best way to accomplish what I want to do?  In addition to fast access in a read environment (write is less important in this case), I would like to have as large a capacity as I can overall without going to a separate drive array.  I am willing to swap out the RAID card if that is required and am also looking at XFS as a possibility.

Add Drives to Raid 10

Hello Everyone,

Since I setup the server, ML350p Gen8, I have installed 16 drives of HP 300GB 10K, 8 for the P420i (integrated) and 8 for the addtional P420 (PCIe). Drives on channels 4 and 8 are hot spare drives on both controllers, and the others (1,2,3,5,6,7) are in Raid 10. Now i am running out of storage so just thought about adding the hot spare ones to the Raid, therefore gaining another 300GB for each controller, so my question is it possible to do it without any downtime (possibly command line) ? I know the normal procedure, reboot into ACU add the drives wait until the build is complete and then expanding the volumes, I can also move the machines to the iSCSI, rebuild the volume with all the drives (through command line) and move the machines back, but both solutions cosume too much downtime. Please note that I have the latest firmwares for all hardware components and I am running latest ESXi from HP.

Disk Writes/sec and Disk transfer/sec eq zero, for about 6 seconds every 10-15 minutes

 Hi,

The problem I have is on a HP DL 380p Gen8, Microsoft SQL database server with Windows 2012R2. The SmartArray controller P420i has the latest 7.02 firmware, Caching enabled, battery ok, Physical Drive Write Cache  enabled. I tried also to disable write cache, and also 100% Write for controller cache.

Every 10-15 minutes I have Disk Writes/sec eq zero for about 6 seconds. During this time, the counters Disk transfer/sec is also zero and the Current Disk Queue Length counter increases. This is valid for all 3 Logical Drives from the server (two raid1+0 and one raid1).

Please help, any ideeas?

Thanks,

Adrian

"SSD Over Provisioning Optimization" -- how long does it take?

Question summary:  How long does 'SSD Over Provisioning Optimization' really take?

Background:  I'm setting up some new servers with large disk arrays -- 6 x 1.6TB SSDs.  I want all my storage in one big raid10.

So... I've gone to hpssa during startup, and run this command:

=> ctrl slot=0 create type=ld drives=1I:1:1,1I:1:2,1I:1:3,1I:1:4,2I:1:5,2I:1:6 raid=10

That gets me a warning:

"SSD Over Provisioning Optimization will be performed on the physical drives in this array. This process may take a long time and cause this application to appear unresponsive. Continue? (y/n)"

The aren't kidding about appearing unresponsive!  I'm 8+ hours in with no evidence of progress.  Can anyone advise about how long this is likely to take?  10 hours?  100?  1000?

Does the HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 534FLR-SFP+ Adapter(700751-B21) support LLDP?

Hello, everyone.

I work at HPE Porto Alegre/Brazil and we bought a HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 534FLR-SFP+ Adapter(700751-B21) to use with a DL Server.

I would like to know if this adapter supports LLDP. I already sent two emails to Sales Consultant and in each answer I had two different informations: one of them said the adapter does not support, and the another one said the adapter does support.

On the adapter's quick specification says nothing about the LLDP. With this, can I assume that the adapter does not support LLDP?

DL380 G6 PCIe- Riser cards

$

Hello,
I have a DL380G6 server that we are trying to add 2x 10GBe interfaces to and needed to install an additional Riser Card to provide the extra PCIe lanes needed. When we booted it up the server had memory errors and would not get past post. When we removed one of the cards the server performed normally but never both at the same time.

Is there a Model number for the primary and secondary riser cards. We currently have 2x SP#496057-001 but could not locate if this was a secondary or primary card.

Thanks,
Jim

็How to add new ROM firmware P89 v2.20 into existing HPSUM repository (SPP v.2016.04) ?

Hi Experts,

I found that the SPP v.2016.04 come with DL360 Gen9 firmware (P89 v2.00) which have problem with Smart Array battery module.

I have downloaded ROM P89 v2.20 already, and what to add to HPSUM Repository.

Can I just copy the file "cp028484.exe" into \\UNCSharePath\SPP\HP\swpackages\ folder?

or I have to copy into any explicit folder?

Thank you in advance,

HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9 + HPE Smart Array P440/4G: SAS/SATA disks + drives Cage compatibility?

$

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out what HP genuine SATA or SAS drives to select for a low cost solution consisting of factory pre-configured:

Since Customer requirements are quite low and the HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9 (with 1 CPU Intel Xeon E5-2609v3 and 8GB RAM DDR4 ECC) + P440/4G is on sale pre-boxed at a very good price I though I can use SATA drives instead of more performant (and expensive) SAS drives...but I'm start having really big doubts about what SATA/SAS Disks to select (Compatibility), how to verify that a correct LFF Disk Cage is yet present and that Smart Array P440/4G Controller internal cabling come pre-installed (QuickSpecs didn't help me as I expected).

I will need - just to start - 4+1=5 disks to form a single RAID 6 Volume (with Global Host Spare) or, eventually, two Volumes: a RAID 1 for OS and a RAID 5 without GHS for Data. Up to 8 disks I think it would be OK.

So here few questions:

  1. Is there a way to verify - before purchasing - that the DL180 Gen9 is correctly equipped with all necessary internal cabling between the SAS Controller and the LFF Drives Cage(s) - no matter if I choose SAS or SATA drives - even if it is sold without any disks installed from factory?
  2. Is there a way to verify - before purchasing - that the DL180 Gen9 is correctly equipped with the right LFF 3,5" Drives Cage (or Cages) if it is sold without any disks installed from factory (SATA or SAS 3,5" LFF disks will be purchased separately)?
  3. Will the 657750-B21 (HP SATA 1TB Hot-Plug LFF 3,5" Midline) be compatible with the DL180 Gen9?
  4. Eventually, will the 652753-B21 (HP SAS 1TB Hot-Plug LFF 3,5" Midline) be compatible with the DL180 Gen9?

Thanks for any help!

Performance of RAID 1 on HP H240 HBA Controller

$

Hi HPE experts,

Very complex hierarchy, however I would first like to know if I am posting in the right Forum on HP H240 HBA Controller on a Proliant ML 150 Gen 9 Server. Please advise if I am not.

I have been testing using software RAID 1 on Windows Server 2012 R2 64bit to mirror a 4TB SAS drive.

The hard disk installed was 2 x 4TB SAS Drive under GPT.

It took me almost 7 ~ 8 days to have the RAID 1 process completed in Windows Server 2012 R2 64bit.

Previously when usign 2TB SAS drive on most Proliant ML Servers under MBR, it took from 1 to 2 days for RAID 1 process to complete under Windows Server 2003 R2 through Windows Server 2008 R2.

Today I create an online check with HP Support for this HP Proliant ML 150 Gen9 regarding this matter.

I am shock to hear from the online chat support expert that the RAID process on HP H240 HBA take 15mins per Gigabyte for rebuild or array expansion.

This mean that 4TB will require 60,000mins to rebuild, equivalent to almost 41 ~ 42 days.

In this case, why should I use hardware RAID since Software RAID performance is much faster?

1.  Software RAID under Windows Server 2012R2 64bit = 7~8 days

2. HP H240 HBA = 41~42 days for RAID 1 rebuild or arrayt expansion.

Can anyone please advise?

I sincerely thank you in advance.

Regards

Alvyn
