HPE HDD Online/Offline Firmware updates: few theoretical questions

$

Hello,

Preamble:

I have a HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9 which was equipped during end of 2016 with HPE Smart Array P440/4G controller and five 1TB 7.2K SATA LFF SC HDD (Part Number 657750-B21) configured into a RAID 6 Array.

All those five disks are - as theirs labels report - HPE Model MB1000GDUNU (Model MG03ACA100 so probably built on Toshiba hardware, HPE Part Number 739333-001, HPE GPN 657753-002).

By factory those initial five HDDs were deployed with Firmware HPG3 then, after applying latest available SPP 2016.10.0, their Firmware was updated flawlessly to the new available version which is HPG4.

I need to add now a 6th HDD as the Global Hot Spare disk for the actual RAID 6 Array and so I purchased the same type of disk (Part Number 657750-B21) discovering that it is Western Digital based (its label reports HPE Model MB1000GCEEK instead of being MB1000GDUNU as the five the Server is already equipped with) and it runs, by factory, an HPG2 Firmware version.

Initially I thought that HPG2 was "older" than the equivalent HPG4 but then I discovered that those Firmware versions apply to different HDD Hardwares (MB1000GCEEK versus MB1000GDUNU, as example) and so HPG2 doesn't necessarily mean older than HPG4 in this specific case.

Exploring the SPP 2016.10.0 components I learned that:

  • HPG4 is the latest available Firmware version for MB1000GBUNU drive models
  • HPG2 is the latest available Firmware version for MB1000GCEEK drive models

so I know that - up to the next SPP - I shouldn't care for any particular Firmware update for the added 6th drive. That's good. A maintenace operation I can avoid (especially considering that equipping the Server with Hot Plug HDDs let the Server to be powered-off for maintenance less times when dealing with HDD add/remove operations).

Now my theoretical questions:

Supposing that the newly added HDD - the 6th one - was instead another Toshiba based unit with factory HPG3 Firmware version (so updateable to latest HPG4):

  1. How can I then manage and perform the update (Online versus Offline) considering the OS (Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 in my case) is running over a RAID 6 Volume managed by the Smart Array P440/4G Controller?
  2. If the Offline method is possible: should I just need to reboot the Server into the latest available SPP (actually 2016.10.0 or 2016.10.2) and that drive will be recognized accordingly?
  3. If the Online method is instead possible: can I do it directly from the OS the Server is running on?
  4. Will the online executable file (in this example will be the cp030808.exe which is the "Online ROM Flash Component for Windows (x64) - MB1000GDUNU, MB2000GDUNV, MB3000GDUPA, and MB4000GDUPB Drives") be able to recognize that the Server has just one physical drive (of six drives it is equipped with) which require specifically a Firmware update (let me say HPG3 to HPG4) or this capability is only available by booting into SPP at boot time and not online?

Thanks!

ML350 G6: Additional RAID controller

I recently purchased a used ProLiant ML350 G6 server.  It has a SFF (2.5") HDD cage, and has 3x 500GB SFF drives mounted and set up in the onboard P410i controller as RAID 0+1 (two drives mirrored + one drive spare).  I have installed Windows Server 2012 R2 on the server, and I want to use a set of 4x 2TB LFF (3.5") drives as file storage, preferably set up as RAID5.  From what I understand, the P410i controller only support one RAID setup, and no mixing between SFF and LFF drives (I was told this by HPE support).  So currently my four LFF drives are set up as RAID5 using software RAID in Windows Server 2012 R2.

I'm a bit worried about the safety in this.  I mean, how robust is this agains drive failures, system crashes etc.?  I would prefer a hardware RAID controller if it doesn't cost a fortune.  Is this possible on the ProLiant ML350 G6 servers?  Any recommendations about what kind of RAID controllers I can use?  Note that I'm not looking to replace the P410i controller (unless it's a controller that can manage both an SFF RAID setup and LFF RAID setup) or any of the SFF drives.  I'm just looking for an additional hardware RAID controller for my LFF storage drives.

Thanks!

HP Proliant DL360 G6 noisy Fans

  1. Hello,
I have my HP Proliant DL360 G6 was working fine, until I have given it to another person who has installed some applications on it.
The issue is that i noticed that the SAS controller battery is missing now and the RAMs are changed, not the ones were installed originally. I don't know what else has been changed.
Now the problem is that the server is not displaying anything on the screen and the fans are very very noisy.
So, is the SAS battery controller is important? What is the major cause for the server to not operate and makes it exteremly noisy??

Thanks in advanced.

Proliant ML150 G6 - Clone Array

Hello !

I'm the new DSI of an entreprise with a Proliant ML150 G6 : I've to change the 2 SAS disks (EF0600FATFF) by 2 server SSD disks (Kingston 960Gb DC400).

The smart array is configured RAID 1 + 0 (I don't understand a RAID 1 +0  with only 2 disks O_o )

How can I clone these 2 old disks to the 2 new disks ? (by using SmartArray or else)

Regards :-)

Dear All,

I have DL360p Gen8 with the following configuration:

Dual CPU Intel E5-2640v2
Memory 16GB x 4 (64GB)
HDD 600GB 10K SAS 6G (Raid 10)

This server has been running about 4 months without any problem and yesterday I upgrade the firmware using HP SUM to the lastest version. The drives start detected as not authenticated HP drives after server reboot. Is this related to HDD firmware issue? If I need to upgrade the HDD firmware for HPD0 to HPDxx, please tell me where is the correct firmware for this drive? or I need to downgrade the P420i? I have been search on the HPE website but I can't find any firmware for this drive (EG0600FCSPL). Here is the details:

We want to add a second sas controller to one of two ML370G5 servers we have. We temporarly installed the p400 controller from one server as second controller to other with success. In their stickers we can find the same numbers ( SP#:441823-001, DG#:013160-000, AS#:013159-002, REV: 0D) and of course different serial numbers.

We have tried two second hand P400 controllers the first with different SP and REV number and the second with only difference in REV number with no luck (runtime led's are all off, card doesn't show up in bios pci devices list). Any help will be appreciated....

DL180 gen9 4LFF to 8LFF upgrade?

I have the 4LFF non hot-plug model of the DL180 gen9 server, and I am running out of drive slots. Is there a way to obtain a backplane from the 8LFF model, or something else to get more drive bays to this server? The case and the controller are the same as far as I know, and the 8LFF model is hot-plug enabled, that would be also a good addition here. Anyone?

DL 380 G8 with second 8SFF drive backplane cage cable won't reach

$

I am trying to install a second 8 disk drive cage in to a DL380 Gen to connect to a P420 controller. These are the items I was sent from coporate. Since this is the secodn drive cage for the server I have removed the DVD module and that is where the new drive is. On the left if facing the front. My issue is if I run the supplied mini SAS cable around the fan module on either side I am short on reaching the expansion slots where the P420 will go. Is there another cable I need to order. I can't seem to find one listed on Hp's site and short of going third party and just buying a random cable that all seem to have extra connectors from that the one that came with the drive cage, i don't see how to get this cofnig to work. Or is there a better way to run the data cable?

Installing Server 2016 on Proliant ML30 Gen9

I am unable to install the OS via smart provisioning. Once I reach the screen to load the installtion media, the system is unable to detect the ISO USB. I've tried to reformating and several USBs to see if that's the issue.

We purchased 5 of these servers and I've now tried this on 3 of them, with no luck. The system is unable to detect installation media. I'm not sure how to proceed at this point.

I've also tried to re-download a fresh copy from Microsoft's VL center, and burn that. ISOs are untouched, with no modifications. I've burn them with both RUFUS and Microsoft's Utility.

As a last attempt, I burnt the ISO to a DVD, and still the system did not detect the installtion media. Any help very appreciated.

Ethernet Port Rx and Tx Counts Not Incrementing iLO

I am using the Redfish REST API to access iLO information about the NIC cards on a DL380 Gen 9. I get some information about the Ethernet ports, including some Rx and Tx counts, but they don't increment after their initial value. I have installed hp-ams. Is there some iLO or hp-ams configuration I may be missing?

Thanks.

HPE SSA User Guide: Spare Management Mode clarification.

$

Hi all,

I've a doubt related to Spare Management mode's description available on the HPE SSA User Guide (Sheet 31 of 143).

Since I'm implementing a Spare drive to an existing RAID 6 Array on a HPE Smart Array P440/4G Controller I want to be sure I understood correctly the differences between the two described Spare Management modes.

The HPE Smart Storage Administrator User Guide reports two possible Spare drive(s) management modes:

Changing the Spare Management mode
The Spare Management feature provides multiple methods for handling spare behavior.
You can choose from the following options:
  • Dedicated: When the failed data drive is replaced, it must be rebuilt from the data on the spare drive. In Dedicated mode, one spare can be dedicated to multiple arrays. [**]
  • Auto-Replace Drives:The spare for the failed data drive automatically becomes the replacement data drive. When the spare is replaced, the data drive does not need to be rebuilt. In Auto-replace mode, spare drives cannot be shared between arrays

Shouldn't the Auto-Replace Drives mode (which I tend to prefer over the Dedicated mode) be described this way instead:

"Auto-Replace Drives: The sparedrive for the failed data drive automatically becomes the replacementnew data drive. When thefailed data drive spare isthen replaced with a new drive, that data drive does not need to be rebuilt [*]. In Auto-replace mode, spare drives cannot be shared between arrays"

Is my line of reasoning correct?

[*] That's because the Spare drive become (changing its role) the new data drive by replacing the failed one so the RAID Volume doesn't require a second rebuild operation. As a consequence - if I understood it correctly - the drive which replaced the failed one, kicks then in as (or with the role of) the new spare drive (or kicks then in just left unassigned?).

[**] As I understood it means that, with this Dedicated mode, two rebuilt operations happen (the first time when the Spare drive kicks in and the second time when the failed data drive is then replaced with a new good one, this one is the target of the second rebuild operation)...this is quite different from the Auto-Replace Drives mode which limit the rebuild to just one process.

SmartArray P400i - can not expand array when internal battery is dead

Hi everyone,

I've observed something strange -- SmartArray P400i with an existing array- I added few more drives but I can not expand array and I suspect that this is due to the internal battery is dead

By "can not expand" I mean the option to expand the array when looking at the SmartArray configuration utility just isn't there? This is an older G5 ProLiant so I'm using SmartStart GUI for SmartArray mamanegemt and I know where or how the expansion works.

So in summary is this some kind of safety feature where array expansion is disabled if the battery is dead?

Thank you

~B
