Battery on HPSA1 Alert on ESXi5

A little new to the HP proliant line - running ESXi 5.5 on DL320 G6

There is an alert in vCenter I can't seem to grasp exactly what it means - I have tried reading some posts/docs about this but still having a hard time on how to approach the remedy for this;

I have attached a SS of the alerts and I have also tried resetting the sensors to see if maybe the alerts were a false positive

Thanks in advance for the help!

Help Upgrading Server

We have a brand new DL380 Gen9 server (PN: 777338-S01) that came with both CPU sockets populated (each has a E5-2640 v3 2.60GHz CPU), two sticks of RAM (one for each CPU for a total of 16GB / PN: 774170-001), both PSU slots populated (each is a 500W PSU / PN: 720478-B21), the included RAID card is a "smart array P440ar" and there are 8 empty SFF hard drive bays. This server is capable of having 24 SFF hard drives, so we'd like to find out what parts we need in order to make this happen.

The 8 empty drive bay cage/board on the end has two long flat light blue cables connected, and they connect to "PORT 1" and "PORT 2" on the motherboard (which appears to be the onboard raid controller; P440ar).

When expanding this server, should I build it out so that all 24 drive bays are on the same controller, and if so, do I need to buy a separate controller, or can the existing P440ar control everything?  Or should I consider buying a different raid controller?  Do you guys have some recommendations for which card I should consider?  Also, which part numbers do I need in terms of drive cages for the other 16 drive bays, cables to connect everything, etc?

P840ar Controller in MIXED mode - RAID & HBA

I have a P840ar controller connected to 10x physical drives.

8x 4TB and 2x 300GB

I need to create a hardware mirror for the 2x 300's for the OS, and have the 8x 4TB in HBA mode so they directly addessable from the OS.

I understood from the issues i experienced with a 440ar, you can run the 840 in mixed mode.  I previously had a P440ar in HBA mode and had to buy another H240 to run the RAID mirror for OS.  That was running storage spaces direct.

How can i enable dual HBA \ RAID mode on the P840ar.

I do not want to create 8x little raid 0's.

DL 380 Fan failed not send as SNMP trap

Hello there,

I have a DL 380 G8 server wich has a failed fan 6. There was not IML entry in the ILO and thus no event in HP SIM. When the server was rebooted i did see post errors complaining about the missing/failed fan.

I would think the initial failure should have created a IML and SNMP trap to our monitoring system HP SIM. My ILO version is 2.50 and there is and update but in the fixes there is no mention of such a bug. When i look at the MIB that translates the SNMP trap i also see Fan failed entries so there should have been an event. Does anybody have the same issue ?

Decoding XR Value:

System Info: FF 0D FC CE C0 FF FF

CPLD Version: 32 32 0C 0C 00 9C 04 00

Memory Board CPLD Version [for DL 500 series server]: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

In-depth Decoding:

FF: Bit 7 & 6 Port 85 // Bit 3 ROM Debug True // Bit 2: Boot Block Low //Bit 0 iLO Security Disabled

0D: TPM not present // CPU ID Match // BlackBox Disabled active low

9C: VRM Error

FIXES

FIX 1: Remove the system-board battery and short the 2 metal pins holding the battery and re-insert the battery in the system-board.

FIX 2: Replace system-board & VRM module that is present in the server [kindly note which particular VRM is present] in one go, this will resolve the issue

Run the server on Minimum config before loading the server fully.

Overclocking A HP Proliant

I am wondering if it is possible to overclock an HP Proliant server.  The server specifically is a DL380 G7 with a single Xeon E5620 cpu.  At only 2.4, this CPU is pretty slow, but it ought to be able to go up a bit no problem.  This is not a production server and it is long out of warranty.  Actually, I have no use for it now since ESXi came along and replaced it and a ton of other bare metal servers.

Does anybody have any advice for this?  This is just a fun project to see if I can get some more juice out of some otherwise unused hardware.  My preference though is to use only the BIOS to do it, but I doubt if that is possible since I have not seen any settings in there for over clocking.  Using a software solution makes me wonder how well it will work and how stable it would be in the overclocked state, but I am willing to try and find out!

Thanks.

hi,

the smart array card support up to 108 hard drives, why it has a  max array count of 64.

once it reached 64 number of arrays, it can not create any more arrays.

for our purpose, we use it to create one array0 per drive, is there anyway can increase the limitation ?

DL165 G7 / SL165G7 BIOS Download Locked / Fatal processor issue

Hello, I need immediate support from a HP expert/professional with access to the information I need to fix a major flaw in HP documentation.

HP advertises the DL165 G7 / SL165G7 as supporting 6200 series of AMD opteron processors in the most current manual. But in the old manual these processors are not supported. You have NO way to tell what bios revision you are getting when you purchase these from a reseller.

So I bought 4 of these and 8 procs, thinking and knowing they would be compatible, and HP has me locked out of critical security updates that are required to fix their own issues unless you purchase a warranty.

Please supply me with this bios download or I will never buy, nor will I ever reccomend HP equipment again and HP will be on the downhill slope for as long as they are throwing components together:

http://h20565.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=4142944&swItemId=MTX_7fbdf546778141aa86354e4eb8&swEnvOid=1113

I purchased these as a trial of HP equipment to see if I would reccomend this equipment for beneficial IT purposes in the future.  But this is strike two of three. I am already extremely dissatisfied with the lack of chat support HP has to offer, and that your support phones only redirect you to these communities offering next to no warranty support at all.

Thanks,

Jacob M.

DL580 G5 Boots to Disk instead of USB

I have a DL580 with a smart array P400 controller (CCISS) and I want to install Oracle Linux 7. I know the P400 isn't supported by Linux 7. But, I found that I can install CentOS 7 by adding "hpsa.hpsa_simple_mode=1 hpsa.hpsa_allow_any=1" to the boot instructions. Works great no problem.

Oracle Linux 7 on the other hand doesn't support that solution. It installs Ok and tries to boot. But
it hangs during the boot process. While booting, it says:

Oracle Linux Server 7 .3 dracut-033-463.0.1.el7

Reached target paths.
Reached target Basic System
Initqueue[430]: Warning dracut initqueue time out starting initqueue scripts
Started dracut initqueue hook
Reached target remote file system(pre)
Reached target remote file system start job is running for dev-disk-by/<disk name goes here> (no limit)

And the booting just hangs at that point. I tried removing the disk and installing Linux to a USB drive. It works fine. But, when I reinstall the disk, the computer insists on booting to the disk. I've checked the BIOS several times and the computer is configured to boot in the following order: CD, USB(C), P400. The USB is enabled and the computer will boot from the USB drive if there are no disk installed.

Any ideas?

Dl20g9 iLO goes to 100FDX when server is off

When DL20g9 is powered off, the iLO drops the links speed to 100FDX, probably to do power saving.

Unfortunately, in one of our DCs, the switching infrastructure only supports GE and up.

Is there a way to tell the iLO to not drop the link speed?

(I am aware that we could splice in some dumb switch, but I'd rather not do so, even if I can get our networking and DC people to agree).

Hello,

We own a HP ProLiant ML350p Gen8 server wich has 32 GB memory (8x4GB).
See the positions below:

here

I want to upgrade the memories and i have got more 1x16GB.
If i had 2x16 GB then i would set in mirror on the two processors, but since i have got only one i dont exactly know how to set up them (8x4GB + 1x16GB) in order to get the best performance.
Someone who is more experienced in this please help me.

Thanks a lot.

Smart Array controller recommendation for ML110 G5 / Server 2012

$

Hi,

I currently have an ML110 G5 running SBS 2003. It's primarily used as a file server. I've recently obtained a copy of Server 2012 R2 which I want to install as part of an upgrade.

I believe that Server 2012 doesn't have drivers for the RAID controller on the ML110 G5 motherboard, so I'm thinking of getting a Smart Array card.

Any recommendations? I want something that can be obtained cheaply on the second-user market. I don't need anything high-performance, just something that will be reliable and work well with the hardware and OS. I need to connect it to 4 x SATA drives in two RAID 1 arrays.

Reason for the upgrade (other than SBS2003 being obsolete) is that I'm out of drive space and need to get some new drives, which will be advanced format. I'm thinking of 4TB WD Red. Are there any issues with running 4K native on such old hardware?

I saw something suggesting the SA E200 has a max drive size of 2TB so that would appear to be no good.

Thanks!

Dave

Proliant DL320e G8 V2 system fan 1 running at 100% constantly

I have a problem with a Proliant 320e.
This started a month ago and with no changes in configuration at the same time to blame for it.
I also have a number of identical setup 320e servers that don't have this issue.

System fan 1 is running at 100% constantly.
In ILO it shows the fan running between 19 and 23% which it's clearly not.

I've tried swapping with spare fans but it goes to 100% constantly from the moment its switched on.
Temperature and all other conditions are normal and no other errors to show. Adjusting the power saving modes has made no difference either.

any ideas out there?

NIC Driver? ProLiant DL380 G7 - WIN Server 2012 R2

Dear HP Community,

I bought a HP ProLiant DL380 G7 Server and installed Windows Server 2012 R2 on it.

After installing the SPP there is still no Network Driver installed for the 4 On-Board NICs on the Backside of the Server.

I search for the Drivers since days now, but still nothing found on the net.

I searched this Forum for answers and others but sadly found nothing.

Has anyone a clue about it?

DL380G7 P410i BBWC failure?

$

Hello,

about 24h ago I installed a new BBWC into my used DL380G7. In the boot messages of the P410i controller it says that the write cache is enabled as soon as the battery is fully charged. So I was waiting patiently for this to come true. Just now, as the write cache is still not active I opend up the DL380 again to have a look at the battery and its status LEDs. This is what I see:

1 – Green, permanent
2 – Green, permanent
3 – Amber, permanent
4 – Off

According to the docs I found ( https://cs.uwaterloo.ca/~brecht/servers/docs/HP-DL-585-G6/HP-Smart-Array-P410-Controller-User.pdf )  that means there's a short circuit accross the battery terminals.

Btw. this is what the ACU gives me:
Cache Disable Code:    Cache is temporarily disabled due to low battery voltage (0x0001)
Detailed Battery Status:   0x02 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00

So what is wrong with my BBWC? Is the battery a non-starter? Is it possible there's something wrong with the way I installed the BBWC? Do I have to unpower the server (I don't really like to do that) to make the Controller realize there's a fully charged battery available now?

It would be really nice if you cold give me a hand...

Thanks a million and best regards!

Thomas
