DL380 Gen 10 SW raid drivers

I had used the raid drivers before to install Server 2016 on our server. The server suffered a hardware failure and the motherboard was replaced under warenty. But windows would no longer boot. We figured it was due to dissimilar firmware, or just windows being crabby.

When I booted to the windows 2016 install media through ILO I attempted to inject the SW Raid drivers as I had done before. The drivers showed up, but wondows would no longer accept them.

The VID was apparently removed from Gen 10 severs for what reason I will never know. So injecting the driver is my only option at this point.

I tried drivers from both the folowing links to no avail

SPP Version Upgrade

Hi guys , I have a question regarding SPP firmware upgrade . In my enviroment , I have a Gen8 Server had updated SPP version from 2017. 04 to 2017.10 . There is no problem occur. According to research , I found that 2017.04 is latest version for Gen8 or below  . When i ask HP Engineer , he reply the same answer .

In this case , if I still want to upgrade SPP Version to  2017.10/2018.03  in server Gen 8 ,Is that any concern ? Is that new SPP version not stable ?  kindly assist . Thanks

Updating SPP on Gen9 devices

I have some servers here and they are running on old SPP versions. They are systems like ProLiant ML350 (BIOS HP P92, 27-12-2015) and DL380 (BIOS HP P89, 27-12-2015) and many others. These two are at least installed with HP SPP 2016.04.0.

Another ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is running the BIOS version HP P89, 13-9-2016, SPP unknown at the moment.

I just took a new server in production and installed SPP 2018.03.0 on that server. I do want to bring the other servers up-to-date. However, when I look at the HPE SPP page, under the tab Documentation there is a table named "SPP Update Compatibility". It does say that I only can update to 2018.03.0 from SPP 2017.10.1,2017.07.2 or 2017.04.0.

My question now is, what will be my update path from older SPP versions, like 2016.04.0 (or older, or newer).

DL380 Gen8 servers dying like flies

At the moment we have the feeling that the DL380 Gen8 servers are dying like flies on a hot summer day. Since about half a year we had several problems that point to the onboard flash memory where the Intelligent Provisioning software is stored.

The symptoms are as follows: iLO reports initialization errors, iLO runs slow, "F10" for Intelligent Provisioning does not work, I-P does not start.
But all servers are booting normal to OS and performance is also normal. Only iLO and I-P is affected.

We tried the format utility for internal nand memory (see advisory here:  https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c04996097) with now success. BTW, success is sometimes relative... we had servers that worked well after that treatment but failed two days later after previously successful reboots.

Other problems are iLO firmware chips that were corrupted and iLO did not work at all. We started to replace the tiny 8-pin eeprom chip with a freshly programmed. Some of these boards worked permanently after repair.

I wonder what's happening... Are the NAND Flash chips bad? Do they fail after some time? Or is it a firmware bug?
I would be glad to get any information on this... Do you have similar problems?

DL380 Gen9 not seeing internal usb drive

I have a DL380 Gen9 that boots ESXi from internal 4gb thumb drive.  There are no local hard drives.  There is an external array.  Today, I took the server down and added it to our Oneview console as a managed server and appled a profile.  This profile is the same one I use for all of our DL380 Gen9's (50+).  AFter the profile was applied I powered on the server and it failed to boot from the thumbdrive.  The only change the Oneview profile makes is to change boot mode from UEFI to Legacy.  So I naturally removed the profile and set boot mode back to UEFI but it still won't boot.  Overriding  boot order (force usb boot) does not work.  I then booted from ESXi ISO image to see if detected the USB as a potential install location and it did not.  Even stranger is that it also did not see the external array.  I've used this troubleshooting method many times to determine if thumbdrive is bad or the image is corrupt.  It always sees the external array even if the thumbdrive is bad. I have not tried a new thumbdrive yet as the site is remote.  Thoughts?

Direct Connect Two Servers

We are building up our core network infrastructure, and I would like to have it set up to traffic directly between both of our servers without putting a load on our core switch.

We have a DL380 G10 running our primary hypervisor, and a DL360e G8 that is our backup.

Our backup software is set to take hourly snapshots of the DL380 VMs and send them to the DL360e. These snapshots aren't huge by any means, but I would like them to transfer as fast as possible, without causing any additional network traffic accross the core switch. Currently we are just utilzing a single 1GbE copper connection to each server. We will be upgrading to 10GbE links with the SPF+ modules.

I would like to have one 10GbE link on each server to the core switch for domain traffic, and utilize the other 10GbE connection to interconnect the servers directly to each other for backup transfers. We will also utilize the four additional 1GbE NICs for load balancing and redundancy to our domain.

Is this a task I can achieve?

Proliant DL380 G7 HDD Bay Failure

My HP Proliant DL380 was working fine until one day a HDD bay failed. I replaced the HDD and it still showed that the bay had failed. Here's what I've tried to fix the bay. I get the orange light on Array 1 Bay 4 (bottom left most bay) regardless of what hdd I put in it.

- Unplugged all parts involved in the HDD management all the way to the RAID controller (smart array P410i).

- Tried different hdds all that get put in that space aren't read and they make a clicking noise (likely caused by spinning up and stopping abruptly)

- Draining the server of power

- Cleaning the bay

- Updating every firmware involved

- Deleting and rebuilding the array it was involved in

Anyone have this problem and find a way to fix it? Let me know if you need more information.

DL360e Gen8 3rd PCI-E slot

$

Hi, there's a third set of PCI-E slots on the far right hand side of the motherboard (as looking at it from the back) with no riser board.

I've attempted to plug a device into this with the case off and it gets power but isn't detected by the system (a PCI-E to m.2 NVME device).

Is there any way to enable this 3rd PCI-E slot? Not sure why it's there if it can't be used.

My plan is to buy a cable riser and fit the card somewhere in the chassis.

Thanks
Ollie

ProLiant DL380 G6 w Smart Array P410i (Server 2008) - module battery fail and 1 SAS HDD fail

Hi,

I would like to seek advice from the community. As i mentioned in the post title, i have 1 failed drive and a failed smart array battery (see the attachment). I'm in the midst of ordering the new parts and the sas hdd may arrive sooner than the battery.

So my question is:

1. Can the raid be rebuild once i hot-swap the new hdd eventhough the Smart Array battery is faulty?
2. Or should i wait for the battery first before swapping out the hdd?

Any advice? Thanks is advance.

I recently updated the BIOS firware and My server now won't display anything and shutdowns after displaying red LED blinking light, but its green initially. I tried all system maintenance switch of accessing redundant ROM and clearing NVRAM. It's still in the same state. There is also No CMOS jumper near the CMOS battery. please provide me a solution.

Is there a version of clonezilla that works with DL360/DL380 G10 Servers?

Hello,

With former Server HW Generations (G8/G9) we used to copy the OS-Image with clonezilla from servers and deploy it to others before our own company tools were ready.

I tested clonezilla with Gen 10 Servers and it always hung up in the clonezilla start screen.

Maybe somebody knows if there is a compatible version or knows some other tools which could work in this context...

Proliant BIOS Updates via PowerShell

I have about a 100 Proliant Servers (Gen6, Gen7, Gen8 and Gen9) that I need to apply BIOS updates on. I have the HP PowerShell Toolkit (v1.4). I am trying to automate the BIOS update and the cmdlet 'Update-HPiLOServerFirmware' seems to be what I need. However, my problem is that I cannot figure out where to get the ROM images in '.full' or '.flash' format that the command requires.

Can any one point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advanced!
