Recommendation for a video editing file server

Hi guys. I am looking to buy a refurbished server for my home office to use as a storage for my live projects. I work as a video editor, and, up until now, I have been using either my local hard disk or USB 3.0 external disks as my working drives. However, my work has outgrown these disks, and I need to expand to a server that would be fast enough for accessing multiple HD and 4K videos.

I've got my eye on a DL-360 G8, but I have some questions before I go forward with the purchase:

1) There are two models available from the DL-360, the DL-360p and the DL-360e. What is the difference between both of them, and which one would better suit my needs?

2) When I contacted the reseller, I have got two different opinions regarding the hard disks I should use with the server. One guy said I should use the 3.5" SAS drives because they would be more reliable and, overall faster. Another said that both the 3.5" and the 2.5" should be the same. The opinions available on the internet and on other forums are mixed as well, so I am not sure which way to go.

3) If I go with the 2.5" drives, my current budget would only allow for the 3Gbps option. Reading online, I have seen some people claiming that the difference between 6Gbps and 3Gbps would not be noticeable in the case of a small server. Is that actually true? Would it be okay if I get these 3Gbps or should I try saving a bit more money and go with the 6Gbps?

4) If I go with the 3.5" drives, the DL-360p can only take four drives. Now, I don't want to install the OS on any of these drives, as I would like to have all of them as the file storage. I checked with the reseller and they said that there is no way for me to throw in an SSD with the OS. However, this unit comes with both USB and an SD card slot, and they said I can run the OS on one of them. I know that something like FreeNAS for instance can run on a USB, but I am a bit skeptical about the speed and the performance of the system. Also, I am more likely to use something like CentOS, rather than FreeNAS. Am I right in being skeptical about it, or should I just go ahead and install the OS on a USB or an SD card?

5) For the RAID, is it better to get the RAID controller that comes with the case, or should I drop it and go with software RAID?

6) Finally, which RAID configuration would be better for my needs? I know that RAID-0 would give me the maximum speed, but I know it is completely unsafe to use it. AFAIK, RAID-10 should theoretically give me the best read and write speed gain with room for 1 drive failure, but I would lose half the disk space. RAID-6, on the other hand, gives me more space, an option for 2 drive failure, but I don't gain as much on the read speed, and nothing on the write speed. For my use case, which way should I go? Keep in mind, that I am not intending to use the server as a backup, as I will be copying the projects to external hard disks to be safe, so I am more interested in having as much speed gain as possible, while of course still having some redundancy, just in case.

Good morning

Currently, three DL380 Gen9 servers are in operation.

I'm using a 64GB model of memory I am going to expand this with an additional 128GB memory.

In this process, we need a memory PN Is there a way to know the memory PN without server shutdown / ILO?

I'm not able to look up this information on the HP website either with the Product Number and/or Serial Number.  I need to know when the End of Life with HP is for the following servers.

HP ProLiant DL 385 G7

HP ProLiant DL 380 G9

Also there used to be a helpful chat session with HP, however I don't think it is around anymore.

thanks

I have a DL380 and a 24 inches monitor HP Z24n and they were working OK until I replace the video card from Nvidia K620 to Nvidia NVS450. At this point, the DL380 couldn't detect the Z24n monitor. I put again the Nvidia K620 and the problem is still there.

The DL380 has a VGA port which I used to run a test and I saw:

error: no such device: HPEZCD260

I think this post can help me, but the links you posted are not available anymore.

Someone can help me please?

I am having issues trying to install server 2012 r2 on an old dl360e gen8 server. I have my installation on a usb stick and it boots to it. When trying to install it, I dont see any drives. I thought maybe I need to load the drivers so I went to the HP site and downloaded the drivers and tried loading them but it still didnt work.

I couldn't manage to install it via Intelligent Provisioning even when I had the iso on a USB stick.

Any help will be appreciated.

Good morning, I hope you understand my English, I write from Italy.
I purchased a ML810e Gen8 V2 with 8 SFF drive cage.
I want to buy 4 SFF cage hot-plug drive, I found two different models.

writes: HP 4U 4 Large Form Factor Hot Plug Hard Drive Backplane Kit 674839-B21
NOTES: The LFF Kit is a backplane kit designed for NHP LFF to hot-plug LFF.

On ebay I also find this: 686745-002 / 822755-001
Suitable for:

HP ProLiant ML310e Gen8 v2
HP ProLiant ML350e Gen8 V2
HPE Gen9 ProLiant ML30 range

visually the two backplanes differ in the shape of the holes and the exit direction of the pin.

are all compatible? can I mount any one?

Thank you

Urgent: GL380, BIOS config for Win7 Kernel Debug

Hello,

After consultation with MS they showed us how to do kernel debug on my laptop. Setting Up Kernel-Mode Debugging over a Serial Cable Manually. and msconfig screenshot:

and the backside of machine is

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/wgcAAOSwEeFVFFML/s-l1600.jpg

in which we could see serial port.

Qeustion:

1) in BIOS setting, there are COM1, COM2, COM3 with different IRQ. And in System Options>>Serial, there are "embedded serial port" and "virtual serial port". I am confused. Please explain the difference.

2) In Windows, the way the OS assigns COM port number is undocumented. I use FT2232 chip based USB-serial converter, and Win7 can either assign them COM3, COM4 or higher number, in which COM3 overlaps "COM3" in BIOS. Could HP help to clarify the overlap?

3) case 2) is for using win7 machine as debugging host. However, if we want to debug the machine itself (DL380 G7), we remove FT2232 cables to minimize chances of conflict. But although (as in screenshot) configured msconfig to enable debugging upon boot, we don't know how to set DL380 G7 BIOS to accept connection. PLease give us definitive instruction on it.

Thanks and please prioritize it as an urgent support case.

12 bay Dl380e G8 LFF - What RAID card do I need?

So we picked up a DL380e G8 12bay LFF, the 3.5" size, but there's no RAID card in it. There's only one port on the motherboard, for the onboard RAID, but if I want to use all 12 bays, I need to put a RAID card in there. Can someone please tell me what model I need, to be able to to 12 2TB drives in a RAID-5? Thanks!

EFI System Partition filesystem

What filesystems are supported for the ESP (EFI System Partition) on DL360 Gen10 hardware? FAT32? NTFS? Linux filesystems, such as ext4?  I know the only filesystem required to be supported by the standard was FAT32, but I was just hoping that hp supports more than that.

Battery/Capacitor Status: Failed (Replace Batteries) on ProLiant DL360 G5

Hello,

I recieved the following errors using hpacucli:

hpacucli ctrl all show config detail | grep -i battery

   No-Battery Write Cache: Disabled
   Battery/Capacitor Count: 1
   Battery/Capacitor Status: Recharging
   No-Battery Write Cache: Disabled
   Battery/Capacitor Count: 2
   Battery/Capacitor Status: Failed (Replace Batteries)
   Failed Battery Location: Battery 1
   Failed Battery Location: Battery 2

This is the DL360 G5 manual: https://images10.newegg.com/User-Manual/User_Manual_59-105-408.pdf

We ordered two battery replacements for this host.  When I opened the chassis, I discovered that there was only one battery.  I replaced it.  I still get "Failed Battery Location" using hpacucli.  I suppose that means the replacements I acquired might be bad.  But since they might be good, I wanted to know how I am misunderstanding the messages above.  Anyone else dealt with this scenario?

HI Team i came to collaborate with a new topic ,

Customers who are populating the server memory should use this documment were says exacly the way that we can use the memory slots and right channel .

Example : the DL360 Gen10 giving the follow Errror Message .

"Error 510 The ISntalled Number of DIMMs on one or more processor "

 Memory Error.jpg

Use the HPE Server Memory Configurator .

https://memoryconfigurator.hpe.com/DDR4memoryconfig/Home/Legal

And For gen10 Explantion use this Technical Link

https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-a00028122en_us&docLocale=en_US

in this case were solve the issue populating the memories like the example bellow 8 DIMM for Each processor .
as the HPE memory Configurator asks , fill the slots 3,4,5,6,7,8, 9 and  10.Memory 1.jpg

ProLiant ML10 v2 PCIe SSD boot disk?

$

Can the HP ProLiant ML10 v2 Tower be configured to use a PCIe SSD drive for the boot disk?

According to one of the answers on this question, the server apparently uses the first SATA port it can find a drive in.

https://community.hpe.com/t5/ProLiant-Servers-ML-DL-SL/HP-ML10-v2-set-the-correct-boot-order-for-HDD/td-p/6838815

I don't know if that's true or not, but in either case:

Is it possible to use a PCIe SSD drive as the boot disk with the OS installed, while using the remaining SATA and SAS ports for storage drives?

DL360 Gen10 PCIE Slot 3 not PCIE Compatible?

$
0
0

We have a problem with DL360 Gen10 PCIE Slot 3. Most PCIE cards do not work in Slot 3 using the LP raiser (tried two of them), althought the same PCIE card works in PCIE slots 1 and 2 of the same server and also works in PCIE slot 3 of DL360 Gen9. We have tested 4 different types of PCIE cards (Moxa serial, etc.). ILO/AHS simply report PCIE slot empty when used in slot 3.

Only HPE cards seem to work in PCIE slot 3. We have tested P408i-p and that one works.

In the DL360 Gen10 Quickspecs HPE claims that all three PCIE slots are PCIE 3.0 compatible. No differences between the slots are stated except that the slot 3 requires a second CPU which is present here. Why does PCIE slot 3 seem to recognize only HPE cards without that fact being mentioned in the quickspecs?

Another difference seems to be that in BIOS there are some settings for PCIE slots 1 and 2 available, but no settings for PCIE slot 3.
