Review of the advise ( disable the disk cache ) for Proliant servers.

$

Hi I wanted to start this thread, because I wanted to review some thinking around this subject.

The cases that I wanted to discuss are:

A) power outage ( may be but today filesystems are not ext2 nor FAT32).

B) The will be protected  ( If a disk goes wrong, the raid should take care of the situation ).

C) I can't think of another case.

My current thinking is the idea if disable the disk cache are meant to protect filesystem that are not capable to recover when something goes wrong. NTFS is been around a while and ext3/XFS and another Transaction systems. So perhaps it is time to review, discuss and clarify this urban myth and put in perspective when is right to have cache and when should not be used.

Installing Server 2019 on ProLiant DL380 Gen 10 with HPE Smart Array P408i-a SR Gen10 controller.

Hi all,

As per the subject, I have been trying to install Server 2019 standard on my ProLiant DL380 Gen 10 with HPE Smart Array P408i-a SR Gen10 controller.

I have the latest versions of Intelligent Provisioning and all firmwares are up-to-date..

When using F10 (Intelligent Provisioning) - using a USB drive, whilst the ISO is detected, when selected the screen just refreshes back to the same screen.  I have tried 3 different ISOs on 3 different USB drives using both ExFAT and NTFS and none work.

If I use HPE Rapid Deployment from the boot menu; the ISO is detected and the install begins, however the install crashes after the first reboot.

Other people who have experienced the above problems have got around it using the ‘Legacy’ BIOS but when I do this, the server crashes when trying to boot into Windows!

Any ideas would be much appreciated.  I can see lots of people with the same problems but no actual fixes!

Thanks in advance.

Rob.

[ PCI-PASSTHROUGHT ] HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331FLR Adapter

Hi,

I'm experiencing problem to perform PCI passthrough of Ethernet card with 4 ports (HP Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331FLR Adapter) on an HP DL360p Gen8 under XEN and KVM. It's kind of related topic https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c04781229 but as it's a FLR card, I don't know how to perform it, or if it's will be the solution. The problem came from that assigning the ports to a domain (HVM or PV mode) share a RMRR, so excluding this region could help like the post suggests.

The pci passthrought worked in PV mode before upgrading the BIOS firmware to the latest provided by HP 2019.05.24(A). Then, after upgrading the bios, the driver in the domain refuses to load due to errors related certainly to access problem to the pci ports.

I also updated ILO and the firmware of the Ethernet adapter but that changed nothing.

I asked to upstream Xen and it seems to be related to the BIOS handling of RMRR.

I know it's not supported but if anyone has found a solution, or at least, has found a compatible PCI-E network card with HP DL360p Gen8 and pci passthrought, any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

313-HPE Smart Storage Battery 1 Failure - Battery Shutdown Event

We have 2 brand new HP ML350 Gen9 servers that have been sitting unused in boxes for last 4 years.  Now we have emergency and unboxed the servers for use.  But they are both posting errors on boot:  313-HPE Smart Storage Battery 1 Failure - Battery Shutdown Event Code: 0x0400.  and 313-HPE Smart Storage Battery 1 Failure - Battery Shutdown Event Code: 0x0404.

I replaced the smart storage battery in both servers.  But this did not resolve the errors on either server.

I flashed every component in both servers to the latest on HP's downloads page.  Currently the iLO is 2.7.  Bios is 2.72.  I have tried downgrading iLO to 2.55b also and fiddled with older versions, but the error continues on both servers.  I have tried resetting RBSU to manufacturer defaults as well as system defaults with no success.  I have reset iLO to default settings.  Flipped the system maintenance switch to clear the NVRAM.  And have run out of ideas on how to fix this.  If it can be fixed.  Are these brand new servers destined for the dumpster?

iLO System Information / Summary shows the Smart Storage Battery Status as Degraded.

iLO System Information / Power shows the Smart Storage Battery as Present: OK and Status: Failed.

The first ML350G9 server has 2x P440/4g controllers and one expander.  The smart array failure error exists whether one controller is installed, or both.

The second ML350G9 server has a P840/4g controller.

If i unplug the smart battery, there is no error on post.

I even disassembled one of the smart array batteries, stuffed 2 fully charged new 18650's into them, popped it in the server (i know 100% those batteries are good) and same error.  The only thing i can think of is that there is a failure code stuck somewhere (iLO?  or BIOS?) that i don't know how to clear, but the server recognizes at boot.

I have nothing attached to the controllers except 2 SSD's and empty cages.

Any ideas?  I need these servers functional in a big way, and their array functionality is crippled and not usable right now.

Hi,

We have just wiped and installed Windows 2016 Standard on a Proliant ML350p G8 Server.

We have put all the drivers on to our knowledge but we cannot get the System Management Agents to install.

The installation fails with the following.

We have installed the SNMP service and have also installed the Ilo 3/4 Chanel Interface Driver For 2016 V3.30.0.0.

Are we missing another driver ?

Many thanks for your time.

From some research I did this error may be due to a bad NAND flash device or may require an iLO4 firmware upgrade, or have the system board replaced.

I do not utilize the iLO feature and do not have a network cable even plugged into the port. My question is do I need to worry about this error if I'm not uising iLO? Could this error/issue keep the Server from booting to Windows if not resolved? It did reboot fine this most recent time with this error. Thanks for any assistance/insight!

NC107i PCIe Gigabit Server Adapter Driver / Disable PXE Boot

$

I have a ProLiant ML150G6 with an NC107i PCIe Gigabit Server Adapter. I have Windows Server 2019 installed.

I'm wondering which driver I should be using: The most recent HP Broadcom 1Gb Driver for Windows Server x64 Editions driver that names this specific adapter in the list of supported adapters is 16.8.0.4(30 Mar 2015). Here is a link: https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=MTX_be20632f280a4f5d8951c4544d. The next newer version is 17.0.0.3(15 Jun 2015) and it does not name this specific adapter in the list of supported adapters.

Is there a way to disable PXE boot on this adapter?

Thank you.

Screen is blank after re-enabling the failed logical drive raid5

Hi,

I am into trouble and need some serious help.

We have one Hp Proliant DL380p Gen8 server that has a RAID 5 configured with 4 physical HDD 300GB each. Unfortunately one of the physical hard drives was faulty that causes the whole logical drive to get failed. I bought one similar HDD and replace the faulty one. After that, I re-enabled the failed logical drive and allow the server to boot. But after that, the server screen got blank and not showing anything. And all the four hard drives were showing green lights in a circle as there is some operation going on. I left the server in the same state and I read over the internet that it may up to take 1 day time to fully recover the data. And now it has been almost one day but the server is still in the same state as it was yesterday.

Can someone please guide how to tackle this situation and how we can get the server up and running again?

Any help or suggestion would be highly appreciable.

Thanks.
