Cheap testbed for apprentices

$

Hi there,

I would like to offer my apprentice some testbed for playing with virtual machines and storage handling in plain OS. No need for enterprise reliability or performance. Price is what matters and I would like to use all parts lying around - and maybe buy cheap used additional parts.

I've got an out-of-support HP ProLiant with P420, 2-port 8-ch IBM (LSI) ServeRaid M1015 flashed to IT mode and a bunch of 3.5 SATA (not SAS) disks. The two ServeRaid SAS ports are already cabled to external SFF-8088 ports.

Now there is an offer to buy an older, used HP M6720 24-bay disk enclosure for little money. Can I cable it to e.g. the ServeRaid HBA with one(?) SFF-8088 to SFF-8088 cable? I don't need/can use a redundant loop, nor a storage controller. I only want to access 24 SATA(!) drives in the enclosure, maybe using OS software RAID.

Thank you for your answers in advance.

Kind regards,

C.

HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 534FLR-SFP+ Adapter - Cisco Meraki MS425-16

Dear Everyone,
I'm going to provide two servers connected to a shared SAN, but the end customer already has in-site a stack made of two Cisco Meraki MS425-16, so he wouldn't want to buy an HPE StoreFabric switch.
So, I have asked to add an HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 534FLR-SFP+ Adapter for each server and the relative Aruba 10G SFP+ to SFP+ 3m Direct Attach Copper Cable in order to attach both servers and the MSA 2050 Storage to the Cisco Meraki,
I will face any compatibility issues for using the Cisco Meraki switch with the architecture quoted?
Have someone has got any experience?
Kindest Regards,
Alfredo

HP ProLiant ML310e Gen8 v2 with Server 2016, Hyper-V

There's been some topics on this in 2016 and I am seeing if there's been any software updates that improve compatibility. I have a HP ProLiant ML310e Gen8 v2 with a RAID 1. I would like to install Server 2016 standard and run Exchange software (I know, not recommended on host) with a Hyper-V DC virtual machine. Previous topics have said that I need to disable VT-D in the bios to make it work. I would like to know if this has been remedied since 2016. If VT-D still needs to be disabled, how badly will it affect my performance? Thanks

DL380 G10 and P408: Disks array not seen by O.S after change a faulty array controller

Hello everyone, I replaced a defective P408i on a DL380 Gen10 server with Windows server 2016. The server originally had 3 raid arrays (A, B and C) composed of 3 pairs of disks each in RAID1, seen by the operating system as 3 distinct partitions: array A = C: (operating system), array B and C like and E: (2 distinct data partitions). The technician who changed the controller( HP in standard warranty) has configured the controller and now I can see the C: partition and the server starts up regularly, but I can't see the other two arrays in any way. From Smart Array Manager I see the three arrays correctly configured on the new P408 controller, but in addition I see two distinct disks, apparently assigned to array A that i think are the actually seen C: partition. How can I make the two remaining arrays visible to the operating system? I thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Hi,

Has anyone seen this error when using the HP Revery Media for a 290P system?

I replaced the disk and when using the recovery media to reload the software, I get this error near the end of the recovery.

Hello.

I have some problems with setting up my new DL385 GEN 10 with AMD processor.
First of all. I made a bootable USB with Windows Server 2016 and went to Intellegent Provisioning for installation (After disk raids where made.). Choose to install from USB and off i went. After the first reboot, nothing happend. I tried to push F10 and reboot and still nothing. After a while of trying i got a notification that i could update some firmware to the server, so i did. This failed and after this i go an error stating the system has an internal error and i need to dowload the latest Intellegent Provisioning ISO and reinstall it. When looking troug the forums here i find others with the same problem and the solution is to download and install a newer version of Intellegent Provisioning the file it where reffering to is this from this thread. After installing this i went ahead and tryed to install again. Only to see i can no longer see the disks in the installation help. Image 1Image 2.

Please help with me to fix this.

Hello,

I have 20 DL380 Gen10 hosts running ESXi 6.7 and I need to upgrade the firmware as well as the ESXi drivers.

What is the best method to accomplish this?

I was thinking of iSUT together with SUM.
How do I install iSUT on ESXi and how do I use SUM to push the firmware and drivers online?

Thanks

We have a new DL20 Gen 9 and are trying to install Windows server 2019 essentials from a USB using the microsoft downloaded ISO file. Intelligent provisioning can see the USB and the ISO fille, you double click on it all is ok, then when you click on the forward arrow to go to the next step is produces and error message "Windows Server 2019 essentials not supported!" The release notes for Inteligent provisioning say that server 2019 essentials is but! Any ideas would be welcome.

DL380 Gen9 Embedded diags reports system board failure

I have a DL380 Gen9 that was working fine until I restarted it yesterday.  It shut down, but when coming back up it finishes post and starts booting windows, and just about when I would expect to see the HPE logo replaced by a windows lock screen, the screen goes black and post starts all over again.

I've tried everything I can think of from a software angle, dism repair, system file check, last known good config, etc, but I can't seem to get it to boot to windows, not even to safe mode.  Even tried restoring the system volumes from the prior day's backup, to no avail.

At that point, I started thinking maybe it's a hardware issue, even though ilo reported everything as healthy.  Booted to UEFI embedded diagnostics and ran the quick test, and sure enough the system board test failed with:

Failure ID Q0DBT1-0009P3-WPW6L1-04FB03

Failed Driver: Smart Array SAS Driver v9.62

Failed Controller: Smart Array P440ar Controller (PCIRoot(0x0)/PCI(0x1,0x0)/PCI(0x0,0x0))

Can anyone tell me what that failure ID represents?

Searching for more information, I came across this advisory which could be relevant, but I'm not certain.  I did updated the system rom just in case, but the server still fails the system board test.

Do I actually have a hardware failure here, or is this a firmware issue making it look like bad hardware?

Thanks,

Steve

Help with setup - DL360E

Hi all,

I've recently purchased a DL360e second hand. and I'm having problems getting into ILO. At the moment I've tried a few different ways of re-installing and resetting but have had no luck. So far I have tried;

Upgrading ILO to v1.71

Upgrading ILO to v2.50

Upon attempting to boot from USB it scans the system and says 'Unable to flash NVRAM'.

From here, I've attempted to put the system maintenance switch 6 to on, booted and turned off, turned back to off and re-booted with no luck. Along with resetting to system default options to clear the NVRAM. When trying to run the USB again, I'm met with the same message.

I've got two drives in the machine at the moment, and was hoping to use ILO to install an OS, but haven't been able to get that far. Any other suggestions are welcome.

DL380e health

I've been handed the reigns of an old G8 DL380e that runs the office I work at. I found the HP Array Config Utility, which lets me keep track of the drives, and I found the HP ProLiant Integrated Management Log Viewer, which has been helpful (had PSU #2 flaking out and didn't know it until I saw errors there).

Does HP or a third-party company have software that lets me monitor CPU temps and system fan speeds?

I'd like to be able to dig into it a bit more, but everywhere else I turn I need a subscription for this, or a subscription for that.

RAM compatibility with Proliant DL380p Gen 8 server

I have Proliant DL380p Gen 8 server running.

It has 256 GB RAM.   It uses HP part number 647653-081 , total 16.   Now I need to extend  another 64 GB in it.

I have below RAM parts with me:

5 * 16GB 2R*4 PC3L-12800-11-13-E2 HMT42GR7AFR4A-PB T8 AH 1439

4 * 16GB 2R*4 PC3-12800-11-12-E2-P2 M393B2G70QH0-CK0Q9 M 1517

Can I use any of above to my requirement without any performance issues? (or) do I need to go for same HP part?

Thank you for your inputs
